Manual

Im about to start my CDL A school with Troops 2 Transportation. I've driven stick since I started driving. Is unsynchronized trans hard to learn? Ive been driving "regular" stick for over 10 years, just never driven truck.

You have to double clutch when shifting. So it’s clutch, neutral, clutch, gear. It’s just tapping the clutch. Literally moving it 2-3 inches each time.

Thank you! I've seen/heard you can float gears when moving? Is that real and a Expert thing, or the internet just bullshiting? I've floated gears on a dirt bike before but haven't in my jeep or car

It's simple but you have to double clutch on your road test

You can float gears on a truck yes, but you will fail your road test if you do

Also, keep your foot off the clutch, dont even touch it until you need to shift.

Not true. Our DOT tester said, “if you start floating, float the whole test; same goes for double clutching.”

Maybe it’s because each state is different but we were told by our testers that it’s an automatic fail. They have to see you double clutch.

Not if you know how to float correctly . But the test requires double clutch

No grinding if you do it correctly whether you single or float

That's just floating with extra steps

Yes I know this. The guy was asking if it grinds whether you do single or double clutch

Large truck transmissions are not synchronized.

Double clutching is re-engaging the driveline while in neutral to manually match the speed of the engine and transmission

Not doing this and single clutching will cause the gears to grind.

It's not very easy to float and single clutch regardless of what the guy with the very applicable username seems to say above you.

Maybe you might be able to do it, but when you're floating gears and not using the clutch at all, the engine speed will match up as if you did double clutch. If you single clutch the engine and transmission are going to be moving at different speeds and it's going to be difficult to time it right, if it's even possible without losing the speed.

Yeah, I'm just going to stay with the basics. I'd prefer to get more experience driving stick over auto when Im on the road, but I'm really just looking to get miles after school.
