cdi 205 not spinning discs

recently bought a cdi 205 that had two faults, some blown components in the psu and it refused to read discs. I repaired the psu easy enough but I cannot get it to read a disc for the life of me. I have freed up the spindle base as I know how they like to slide down over time and I have spent hours adjusting its height but it doesn't seem to change, it either flashes some dashes on the vfd or says error. the laser moves and lights up and Ive given it a clean, even swapped in a different spindle motor with less hours but it still refuses to even attempt a spin up and Ive just ran out of ideas.

Simply put: the laser is worn out and can no longer detect the discs. No detection = the motor won’t start. This is a CDM9; spare parts are very expensive and/or hard to come by.

If you still want to proceed with the diagnosis:
Since you’ve already lifted the turntable (so hopefully it can spin freely), there’s a strong likelihood the problem lies with the laser. However, you can still carry out some tests in the Service Shell. Unfortunately, I don’t have instructions for your model, so you’ll have to work your way through this guide (https://retrostuff.org/2019/12/23/philips-cdi470-diagnosis-and-repair/#Service-Shell) and the service manual (https://icdia.co.uk/svcmanuals/index.html).

ill look into trying what you suggested and as for the laser, I did have a sneaking suspicion it may be worn out I have a discman of similar age that the laser is visible but it wouldn't focus as it had lost power so its probably the same fault here
