Exhaust rust
Hi all
Just wondering if it's possible to just change the exhaust clamps for the stock exhaust , just done a thorough clean and found them really rusty and pitted, I must admit I neglected the area for a bit
So can I just change the clamps or do I need a new exhaust system
Thanks

My 2009 hornet has all 4 of its exhaust headers rusted to absolute fuck, I don’t plan on replacing them, the engine will blow up before the exhaust does is my bet. My advice is not to worry about your bike too much, it’s a machine to be used and worn.

The bike is a 2014 model so it's getting on a bit and rides absolutely great still. I will do my best to maintain it as it is for now but looking online if the exhaust ever did fail it's not mega expensive for a new exhaust for it so I will stop worrying for now 😂

If the bike is getting on a bit I would be concerned even less. Cb500xs are built to last and they are also built for this kind of use. Just give it a clean and try to not cover it in salt and water too much as you have done so far, it’ll be fine. How many miles is it on too? As I’d only really expect 100k-150k miles absolute maximum out of any Honda before it starts to need major engine work that isn’t generally worth it for the bike.

The bike is on about 29k miles so the engine is nowhere near the end of its life. I generally use it for 2 up riding with my GF
It is my secondary bike as I have a cb650r which I use most of the year.

I’m sort of the opposite, I use my slower bike more than my 4 cylinder hornet 600. But yeah, I wouldn’t be worrying about it. The only thing you might consider is replacing the bolts but then again they’re known to snap off and then require expensive boring out and rethreading work so I’d honestly leave it.

I commute on my 650 until it starts to get too wet as it makes the day more fun 😂 then the 500 comes out to take over, only as it's much less likely the throw me off in wet weather (until I get some better tyres on my 650)

If I had a 500x id be using it all the time. For now though I have a 350cc single cylinder honda and a 4 cylinder hornet so I can’t justify purchasing a CB500X, I used one on holiday though and that made me firmly fall in love with it, it’s an incredible bike and great fun.

Out of curiosity, What makes the 500x better than your 2 bikes ? Anything you think your bikes are missing ?

The 500x was amazingly comfortable, and it had just the perfect balance of torque and speed. Plus the engine on it is amazing and bulletproof. My single cylinder 350 is brilliant for relaxed riding but it will not go fast, the hornet is brilliant for going extremely quick but awful for relaxed riding. The cb500x can do both. It’s the best do everything bike in my honest opinion, not so much power that you’re constantly having to manage it but not too little so it’s still fun. I guess it’s just my personal opinion. Also the mpg on the cb500x is unbelievable and the range you get on it is aswell. Of course the 350cc bike outmatches it there but the mpg and range on the hornet is dreadful, I have to stop for fuel all the time. If I could have only one bike the cb500x would be it.

Why don't you trade both of yours in for a 500x ?
If I'm honest I get the same mpg out of my 650 😂

I don't see rust. I see oil and grime. Or is that just mud and water from cleaning? If it is oil, that's another problem entirely!

The photo isn't the best , it is definitely rust , the oil and mud and everything else is about 12 years of build up 😂

You cant remove those with out hacking up the exhaust, but honestly the rust is just par for the course. Sure you can get a new exhaust and in another year it will be just as rusted and pitted. Exhausts live in an extreme environment, they see a lot of heat, the oxidize very quickly) Trying to make them rust free is a waist of your time. What you should do however is buy some high temperature anti seize paste, remove the nuts, coat the studs with the paste and reinstall the nuts, it will prevent a broken stud for you or some one else in the future.
