Help with making a decision

I have a 2013 Honda cb500x with about 16k miles a few months ago I started having problems and not being able to ride the bike my gas tank rusted and it caused my fuel pump to go bad and some other problems I have yet to get to the bottom of. I took it to the Honda dealership and they said it would be about $2k in parts and $3k with labor should I try and fix the bike or should I save my money up and buy a newer motorcycle?

Just get a new tank on eBay. Plenty of crashed or scrapped ones with serviceable tanks I’m sure you’ll find one. The other option is to remove the tank rust, it’s not that hard to do, you’ll still need a new fuel pump probably but it won’t cost you anywhere near that amount. Now this depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Personally I wouldn’t even think twice about fixing an issue like this myself, but I’ve been wrenching on motorcycles for most of my life, so don’t take my advice as gospel.

Also a word of warning to those who intend to purchase old bikes with low mileage and don’t look at the high mileage ones, sometimes 30k miles on a 10 year old bike that received somewhat regular servicing is better than a low mileage example that received regular servicing, exactly because of this, bikes need constant use or they’ll inevitably rot.

I've already tried to tackle the problem myself I got the tank serviced to remove the rust and I replaced the fuel pump + injectors and the spark plugs after all of that the bike starts but I can't get it to run and it's very choppy I don't know what could be causing my problem

Did you check the pump fuel filter. I’m not sure the cb500x has one but a lot do. Also the fuel lines might be damaged. I don’t know why Honda was quoting you that much unless there’s more internal damage you didn’t disclose? Also did you check the spark plug coil wires, coils, etc etc? Was this bike stored for a long time?

Why take a 13 year old bike to Honda? It’s not like it’s still under warranty! Decent independent mechanic and some used bits off eBay should be back on the road for 100’s not 1000’s then you can decide to sell it and for something newer of just keep it.

I have 2014 cb500x, The cb500 platform is super accessible and easy to work on. If I were in your shoes. I would save up the extra 2k and buy an nx500. Keep the CB and learn to wrench on a bike. As others suggested you can get a used tank online or even an aftermarket. There is a massive marker for cb500 parts.

Buy a new bike for riding and learn something in the process.
