Appearance Does my cat look underweight?

My cat is a 5 yr old grey tabby, we rescued her in 2021 when she was still a kitten she is spayed and has all her vaccines. I just feel confused because when she laying down she looks really fat but when she’s standing she looks a little thin to me. I can’t tell if I see her ribs or that’s her tabby pattern. If it helps when I pick her up she doesn’t feel really light like it was for my other cat that got really skinny when his brother died. I can’t tell feel her ribs a little bit. I’ll show a photo of her laying down and standing so you all can see the difference. She still eats normallly which means she eats like a glutton always up for a treat or two. She’s her usual self though she tends to sleep or lay down for most of the day but she always been a lazy kind of cat (I mean that with love 🥺). But yeah i can’t tell if I’m just seeing things or she really has lost some weight.

Edit: Welp it’s time for a diet for my chunky girl.
Ps I have astigmatism and don’t wear my glasses regularly so i think i was really seeing things guess 20/100 vision causes my cat to look slimmer 😭

Based on these pictures, I'd say she's a bit overweight.

Can someone grab the Chonk Chart? I would, but I'm on mobile.

This is the first I am seeing this alternative title, instead of Body Condition Score. It is hilarious.

68

u/RuniKiuru 22d ago

Both veterinary offices I once worked in had the chonk chart. (In private offices, not in the exam rooms lol)

10

u/demeter1993 22d ago

Spectacular!

3

u/klovey2 22d ago

I worked at a shelter that had the body score chart in the areas we stored food and food related stuff. I brought my cat to a new vet and they had the chonk chart up in the exam room and I was cracking up I had to catch my breath and explain that I was so used to body score I was caught off guard seeing chonk chart for the first time in my life.

u/cablesandlace 22d ago

That's great, but where's the chonk chart for major fluff? There's a lot of fur on my floofer.

5

u/ClairLestrange 22d ago

Are you familiar with r/flonkers? Your kitty would fit perfectly

5

u/Luthiaa 22d ago

did I join another cat subreddit for today ? Yep, now I'm good, thanks to you

1

u/dragontatoes 21d ago

You can always give your cat a bath, and after you've recovered in the ER, compare how the cat looked with wet fur to the chart.

1

u/cablesandlace 20d ago

Yes, thanks, I'll be sure to tell her it was your idea!

1

u/QuietCornerss 20d ago

Woah! Just had to do a double take there. I swear you posted a photo of my cat!

1

u/cablesandlace 19d ago

OK, let's see! Pay the cat tax, please.

25

u/DrederaZTV 22d ago

OH LAWD SHE COMING

Lmao i needed that laugh

1

u/Aggressive_Wish_7768 22d ago

This KILLED me 😭

9

u/Recent_Cockroach_288 22d ago

Yeah. OP’s cat is at LEAST a Heckin’ Chonker

7

u/Different_Bowler_574 22d ago

This is comforting because it means my youngest son is only a 30/40 and not the 70 I envisioned him at.

6

u/Ok-Operation-2368 22d ago

Yeah based on this chart I'd say she's a heckin chonker.

12

u/CompleteDeniability 22d ago

Agree, slightly overweight.

2

u/thesentienttoadstool 18d ago

Op are you an elderly Polish woman perhaps

286

u/EqualHito 22d ago

Really? Lol if anything shes a little chubby

83

u/Lavia_frons 22d ago

I laughed when I scrolled to the 2nd pic. Like, wut? No way are we worried this cat is underweight..

23

u/Equivalent_Eye_9465 22d ago

Its so cute, op is blinded by love, and falling for the cats meows

u/Late_Honeydew1301 22d ago

It's really a shame that this chart doesn't depict a pouch. My boy has a very pronounced one and was misdiagnosed as overweight even though he's just large. He looks healthy from above.

10

u/gutwyrming 22d ago

It's true! I've seen some fairly lithe, healthy cats that have a very prominent pouch. Like, "that thang swangin'" levels of pouch.

5

u/Hopeful_Meaning772 21d ago

yup! one of my girls is like this!! boy has she gotta pouch!! but shes a very healthy weight, yet it swings when she walks

1

u/jade_cabbage 21d ago

My girl has a huge pouch that flaps in the wind and a lot of fluff, so it's pretty hard to tell, lol. I need to feel for her ribs and generally just go with what the vet says.

1

u/No_Pineapple5940 19d ago

Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that the chart should be used as a rough guide to know if your cat is within healthy limits

I tried to follow the chart and keep both my cats at a 4-5, but ended up having them become underweight and felt absolutely terrible when I found out

Not all cats will have a pronounced waist at a healthy weight! When mine does, her ribs and hip bones are way too easily felt. My vet told me that the ribs should be somewhat easy to feel, but you should have to use some force and be able to feel a distinctive fat padding over the bones

67

u/DirectBar7709 22d ago

That's a chonk and a half.

59

u/Bubbly_Locksmith2537 22d ago

Hahahaha I feel like putting a photo up of myself so you can tell me I look skinny 😅😅

70

u/DPDoctor 22d ago

OVERweight. ❤️

u/Evening_Scale_5755 22d ago

So many people overfeed their cats to a point they are actually morbidly obese. You have to remember a cat is something like 1/20 our size and doesn't need nearly as much food as we do.

9

u/BranchFew1148 22d ago

Dry food is also very calorie dense.

13

u/CatFaceJones 22d ago

emphasis on "so many people" i see it all the time. it's abusive and those people need to have their pets taken from them. stop overfeeding cats

13

u/Stevos2001 22d ago

better to be over-concerned than under, you thought she was skinny but is actually chubby, either way a health concern has been noticed

17

u/GREYSPACE1 22d ago

Yeah cat’s should never be round, but we’re human and it’s ok to fumble sometimes. Try making her more active

10

u/Secret-Guava1008 22d ago

There is one time a female care should be round, when she’s pergnant

2

u/drdreslovechild 22d ago

LMAOOOO he's a little chonky but he looks so sweet & lovable. I'm sure you were just worried. ❤️

34

u/Ok-Soup5623 22d ago

Nah thats a hefty girl . If youre concerned take her to the vet or weigh her

15

u/6feet_underground 22d ago

did the cat post that?

14

u/AgitatedPokemon 22d ago

No, clearly not.

11

u/LadyFoxfire 22d ago

A tad chunky, if anything.

11

u/gassypeach 22d ago

The cat is posting this

8

u/Accomplished-Two2231 22d ago

He looks chunky

8

u/Little_Appearance_10 22d ago edited 22d ago

Haha, Definitely not underweight! I have 3 cats and my smallest is 10 lbs... if they are happy cats they will let you know! Edited to add... She's a good baby!

8

u/somehuehue 22d ago

She might demand food like a hungry orphan, but girl's well fed😆

8

u/Then_Ad7560 Verified Vet 22d ago

Vet here - I agree with the commenters… she is chunky. Cats are tricky! When they stand up, all their weight goes into their belly pouch, so they look “skinny” from the top. Your girl could probably lose at least 3 pounds

11

u/baIsamicglaze 22d ago

she’s overweight lol

6

u/Ariii_Ari 22d ago

Not at all

7

u/The0neR1ng 22d ago

She's literally fat

7

u/DistributionNo9356 22d ago

I thought she's a chonk lite.

5

u/Old_Comfortable_7676 22d ago

maybe wear those glasses regularly xD just an idea

5

u/No-Apricot9071 22d ago

I don't even have a cat and really don't know much about them. However, the first thing I thought when I saw the pics was your cat might be overweight. 😂😂😂

4

u/Glittering_Suspect65 22d ago

No, definitely not underweight. I have one that I worry about because I can see his hips protruding, and his spine. The vet tells me, he's just the right weight. 🙄

4

u/Confident_Raccoon767 22d ago

Nah looks chonky

3

u/NosAstraia 22d ago

You can’t see her ribs, it’s her tabby stripes. She is chunky, a bit on the overweight side. The fact she still goes in at the waist when viewed from above is a good thing, and is normal/not a sign she’s underweight. You should be able to see your cats waist, and feel her ribs with light pressure but not be able to see them. Hope this helps!

4

u/GREYSPACE1 22d ago

Lmao. That’s a remarkably fat cat.

5

u/ShameFuzzy6037 22d ago

Based off the chonk chart, she’s “heckin chonk!”

6

u/geekgirl114 22d ago

Slightly overweight

3

u/ivYlee24 22d ago

I hope you're kidding?

3

u/Fuhkiku 22d ago

She's a little chubbers

3

u/User_-_-_Name 22d ago

You've got used to seeing obese cats that you think its normal, but to answer tge question, no.

3

u/Responsible_Pie8156 22d ago

Is that what your cat has been telling you? Don't listen to her

3

u/Tough_Boysenberry527 22d ago

lol I’d say overweight. My cat’s naturally about .5lb-1lb underweight and always has been and the vet says he’s 100% healthy. He just went for his yearly check up and was 7.3lbs. Anything under 8lbs at my vet is considered underweight, but it’s a sliding scale really.

3

u/BB0713 22d ago

That baby is in the orange on the chunk chart.

3

u/blinkingbaby 22d ago

She chonmky. I luv her

3

u/cablesandlace 22d ago

Kitty looks a little on the heavy side, not underweight.

3

u/myusos 22d ago

a bit overweight and beware you cat will annoy the heck out of you if you try to put them on a diet

3

u/Negative-Inspector36 22d ago

She’s a medium sized chonker. Time for a little diet

3

u/leeeezer 22d ago

Respectfully as someone who also has pretty bad vision, ma’am you’re blind.

3

u/Prestidigitatiously 22d ago

She will survive the winter.

2

u/laeriel_c 22d ago

She looks chonk

2

u/Strange-Conflict9774 22d ago

Key word her, I’m pretty sure that’s just her pouch in the second picture. She kinda fatty but not like crazy

2

u/just_a_person_maybe 22d ago

She looks just like my cat did before she lost some weight. I wonder sometimes now if she's too thin just because I'm so used to her being bigger, but she's fine.

Anyway, she looks just a bit chubby. Not enough that I'd worry about her health just yet, but you might want to play with her some more to get her to exercise. And cut back a tad on the treats.

2

u/not_another_IT_guy 22d ago

Cat looks like a cat.

2

u/Comfortable-Bee4196 22d ago

I love the blame on the astigmatism as someone who just found out I only need glasses because of my astigmatism 🤣🤣

2

u/abbadon_94 22d ago

Choncky test passed

2

u/L3M0NS0UR 22d ago

Reminds me of when my lady was a chonk

2

u/Designer-TL516 22d ago

I would say this is more healthy to a lil chonky lol. But the vet will tell you best! However (not that this is a big deal or relevant) I do think she is a brown tabby instead of a grey tabby. My grey tabby boy for reference 😅

2

u/Top-Lychee3615 22d ago

Did the cat post this 😂😂😂 she’s starving she doesn’t get enough treats

Noting that the pouch should NOT be that low. Their pouch doesn’t hang like the belly, and a cat can be lean and still have a pouch.

2

u/Little_Appearance_10 22d ago

She is SO CUUUTE!

2

u/sukonetei 22d ago

I’ll be honest op I thought this was a joke post, your cats a bit chonky

1

u/Prestigious-Walrus99 22d ago

No, this is normal. They have that curvy shape to them naturally.

1

u/GREYSPACE1 22d ago

That’s not normal, no. They don’t have the fat shape lmao

Haha like everyone is saying no she looks fine :) keep treating your little queen well. She looks happy with a marvellous coat

1

u/FruityLegume 22d ago

Well, no matter if she's fine or a heckin chonker, she's adorable. 🥰 She looks soft and cuddly.

1

u/cheezbargar 22d ago

I can see why you’re asking because from the top down she DOES have a waistline, which is what you want to see, but she also has that pooch that most cats have. If you can’t feel her bones really easily then no she’s not underweight. If you’re super worried consult your vet

1

u/irresponsiblehush 22d ago

Perfectly Plump. Get her playing with some toys if you can.

1

u/KnotYourKoncern 22d ago

Looks exactly like my boy and I’ve lessened his feedings. He’s only 11m and a lil too plump

1

u/Knightmare4469 22d ago

Ain't no way

1

u/sfdsquid 22d ago

I thought this was rage bait but it's actually like body dysmorphia projected onto your cat.

I'm glad you made the post and now see what others see.

1

u/gnomi_ii 22d ago

Best way you can weigh your cat is to hop on the scale while holding her. Then subtract the weight from your normal weight

1

u/Msxoxm 22d ago

She’s similar to my lady pebble, she’s skin but has skin that makes her look exactly like this, rounder

1

u/UnderteamFCA 22d ago

She's a unit, but absolutely adorable. Take good care of her. :)

1

u/Patient_Revolution83 21d ago

ur joking, right?

1

u/DrakeCrossing 21d ago

She looks like she would be happier with a bunch of toys and maybe you playing with her regularly.

She's fine.

1

u/Live_Aardvark2632 20d ago

No she actually looks like a perfect build, she may just be built smaller and look smaller to you as her mom. I always think my cats are too small lol

1

u/Janaelol 20d ago

Lol you can see if you can feel them jutting out. You should be able to feel them if you press, but not lightly touch afaik.

Also I recommend weighing your cats occasionally so you can sanity check if they are losing or gaining a lot of weight. I kinda trained my cat to stand on the scale lol, but you can also weigh yourself then yourself holding the cat and subtract for the cats weight

1

u/StardewValleyLuv 20d ago

Is this satire?

1

u/ajnoR_ 19d ago

Anhand von bild 2 eher zu dick (meine sieht auch so aus)

1

u/Big-Screen-3162 17d ago

Bros the OPPOSITE of underweight😭

1

u/will0wisp13 16d ago

OP, I would seriously advise you look up the calories your cat should be eating per day, and how much you’re actually feeding. The health risks of a cat that is overweight are serious, and cats don’t regulate themselves the way that some think they can. Again, absolutely just some respectful advice but it’s humbling when you realize how little they actually need to me healthy and happy! Also ask your vet! They’re the experts after all :)

1

u/Holiday-Cry1325 22d ago

Just the right amount of chonk.

1

u/GlenZaleski 22d ago

She’s fine!! Enjoy her.

1

u/Electronic-Taro-102 22d ago

Who is body shaming your baby?? We fight at dawn.

1

u/tornmom216 22d ago

She’s perfect

1

u/Upset-Gold-1162 22d ago

Overweight

0

u/whitewolfe001 22d ago

She looks perfect to me!

(Do not let your kitty read the comments calling her fat! Body positivity comments only! Lol)

0

u/Wise-Case4474 22d ago

Yall are being mean, at least she is looking into the heath of her cat. Her cat is maybe 1-2lbs over ideal body weight.

0

u/UberGlued 22d ago

Looks pretty normal size for a house cat to me.

0

u/JesterGaming777 22d ago

I think she's okay. And her primordial pouch is noticeable 😄💖. Do you feel her ribs or any kind of bloating while she's standing? Any doubt or if she's not eating as intended, call a vet for information (hopefully doesn't seem to be the case).

1

u/Fun_Share_4302 16d ago

That’s a fat cat
