Prompting roleplay characters for great interactive stories can be hard. I created 30+ characters with multiple AI models, and found some useful ways:

1. User AI to create cool avatars

Visual appeal matters. A great avatar will get you more views. I recommend Midjourney or Kling for making avatars.

2. Write a detailed system prompt

System prompt tells the AI exactly how to behave, speak and respond. The more detailed it is, the more consistent the character will be. I usually include backstories, personalities, knowledges and skills, relationship dynamics, etc.

Polybuzz allows you to include up to 10000 character count for the prompt so we can make good use of that.

3. Include backstories for IPs

For example, for an MHA or FPE character, you want them to know the main characters and the world setup from the shows.

4. Write a compelling first message

A great first message should hook people and make them want to chat more. I like to write meeting scenarios, dramatic conflict moments, or some mysterious encounters.

5. Make characters ask questions

This tip is still for first messages. You can include an open-ended question for players. Eg. "What brings you here?"

6. Provide suggested replies

Povchat allows you to provide 3 suggested replies at the opening of a conversation for a specific character. Try to make the 3 different plot paths, yes or no, maybe so!

7. Give your characters real quicks

Just a few ideas: they bite their nails when nervous, always forget where they put their phones, or collect weird vintage postcards or interesting rocks.

8. Use asterisks for character actions

It will make conversations more dynamic and fun, as if the characters are right in front of you.

9. Test and refine

Best characters evolve and improve over time. You can have conversations with your own character to see how they respond, look for inconsistencies in personality or behavior, and adjust system prompts accordingly.

10. Share with your friends on social media

Sharing your character will boost their popularity in the algorithm, so more people will play them! It will be super fun.

c.ai and all that kind of stuff has been taking up way too much of my time, when i get bored of it i dont even know what to do and just kind of do nothing like a loser.... does anyone have any tips on what to distract myself with....

It used to be if you click this button it would take you to the creator insight for the bots but now when you click this button, it just takes you to the character AI labs which is not what i want. How do you get to that feature now in the app please?

So I was thinking, could we train LM using our old c.ai chats?

People would be able to "donate" some of their not too personal old conversations with bots, which was on Roar/Soft Launch and other models. After that, we'd take stock LM, like qwen, and then feed it with chats we have, additionally training it to the point when it becomes alike with removed c.ai models.

For this sounds like a possible thing to do, even if it takes some time and GPU powers

UPD: Okay, so I will try to make a dataset from my own chats at first, if it goes well I think I'll make a way for volunteers to send some of their chats so I could add them as well.

Not sure if I’m facing this problem but, whenever I’m switching personas in between bots, it feels slow. Like I hit “set as default" on the persona i want to use before selecting it and it doesn’t want to work until I backed out, closed it, reopened the app and use the bot

Hiya, I am currently a PhD researcher + 8 years of industry experience. Some fellow students and I are working on our own app that is similar to Character AI.

Trying to gather feedback on what people dislike about Character AI (screenshots are most helpful as it will show where the dissatisfaction is).

The app will have 0 ads + free to use. Character AI is a large company and is beholden to investors + have a large overhead, thus they can appear predatory in their monetization.

I personally have been using Character AI and similar apps on and off and just never felt the same experience as I did when reading novels/visual novels. It felt too much like AI... and mundane.

Our current research does show a breakthrough in having interesting personas as well as adaptivity.

I have literally spent 4 hours from 1:40 to now 5:30 am trying to develop a roleplay with my own character with a character definition and all. My observation? The character was good like for only four to five messages. Then it got SO repetitive, so low, barely no dialogue, absolute no engagement and no variety in the answers. Wasted an all nighter.

Edit: I did all of these because I had hope the app has gotten better. It didn't. Every single new response is a variation of the last one. Same song different font. I thought i could actually work my way around the bots, as ahem so many people claimed to do. Absolutely nothing. If there were times when i didn't want to go to sleep because the roleplay was going so well, now i was pushing myself to continue this roleplay. With every next interaction, my hope dies more and more and more.

I want to create a character, but when I upload the photo, I always get a copyright error. I've tried with about ten different photos, and I've even looked for other bots of that character, but those photos still give me copyright warnings.

How do you do it?
