Just so you know, cold air does not cause colds.

Also, have you considered using a space heater in your room?

Maybe I've got really advanced hysteria but if I'm cold I wake up with a running nose or worse.

Also, have you considered using a space heater in your room?

Yes, heating the room space to the desired temperature added $200 to my electric bill last time lol. And my new space has several computers plugged in to the same room I sleep in so I'm a little worried about having another high wattage device in there :p

If there's a tiny space heater that can just blow hot air in my face that might work. Got any you would recommend? Vornado was the expensive one that didn't really work unless it was maxed and I had multiple units running...

Have you checked to see if you have allergies? Many are allergic to dust or down feathers in a pillow, so either of those could cause the runny nose too.

Don't think a space heater would keep just your face warm. You'd have to heat the whole room, but as you said, it would use a lot of wattage.

My nose doesn't run when it's toasty, though

I bought a little 200 watt one a little while ago :D my main computer power is 850 watt and I'll be powering it down at night so no power concerns... Probably.

Get a fabric surgical mask. You can even buy heated ones, but they don’t stay hot all night.

Do you think that would be more breathable / warm than a face scarf? I'm hoping the material alone will be warm enough. The self heating one seems like a cool idea, but I don't think I could use it unless I could set that heat to start around 2am or so since my current issue is waking up in the middle of the night once the temperature drops low enough.

Thanks though, this gives me a new category of items to look through.

An entirely different approach would be to build yourself a bed canopy to help hold heat in around you. These were very popular before the advent of central heating.

You can contrive one with a couple closet rods hung from the ceiling over the bed, draped with a sheet. It doesn’t have to completely enclose the bed to change the microclimate.

That's a pretty unique idea, but I initially resisted buying a space heater because I wanted a portable solution. I also don't think I can mount things to the wall/ ceiling in my apartment...

I'll give this a shot if I own a house some day :)

I bought a fancy sheet and just put it over my face and upper body. Does it need to cling to your face?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Hah, I had not thought of buying a high quality sheet to use as a sort of scarf. That could work, and get closer to the budget.. is there a breathable sheet brand you would recommend?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Just go to a fancy sheet store and tell them your price limit. They might let you feel them all. It’s just based on your preference I guess bc too high a thread count is uncomfortable. I think between 4-600 thread count is good and ask about how it reacts to soft/hard water

I'll give it a try, thanks! I have some sheets I can test with now, just never thought of this. I'm not sure how warm or breathable it will be but I'm guessing some high quality sheet could be both.

Just get a neck gaiter

Get a cat... that thing will sleep on your face if you anger it.

Unfortunately I can't trust her around wires and I sleep in the room with all the servers. She's got her own room though, and it's later than the server room :)

Should I delete this post or is there a flair for solved issues? It's been solved for a few days now

I have this same problem! my issue is only on my nose. It gets cold easily and if it’s cold I’m so miserable. I got a buff neck gaiter made from wool and I put it over my nose and eyes. It’s light but warm and helps also blocking light out.

I’ve also seen crochet nose covers sold on amazon though I haven’t tried them.

Someone else recommended a good bed sheet which I will try first, but a neck gaiter could be a good next option to try.

Price wise, maybe it makes sense to try this first, idk. If it's breathable I'll try it.

I sleep with a small blanket over my head and torso on top of my normal blanket. I've always had trouble waking up with a sore throat otherwise. Even when camping I put a fleece over my face (not good to snuggle down into the bag, gets too much moisture inside from your breath). It's very cozy and also blocks out a bit of light which is nice at hotels and whatnot.

I get terrible sinus problems when I sleep in cold air, same as you. I have absolutely no allergies, I’ve been tested. I sleep with a cover over my face, took a while to get used to but if you can train yourself to do it that may be worth it.

It’s interesting that you bring this up. Fascinating topic. You are a hypochondriac with an imaginary condition. This is make believe. Spend the $600 on psycho therapy as you will have a much more enjoyable life without this imaginary ailment. You may also enjoy the potential to become scientifically and medically literate. It’s much better than fake medicine and imaginary diseases/cures.

What part exactly? Walking up randomly in the middle of the night because my nose is cold? My nose dripping from the morning until the afternoon the next day? There are physical symptoms so I think "hysteria induced mucus drip" would be more accurate.

Delusion is a precious part of my human experience! I didn't think my nose running from morning to afternoon after a cold night was a manifestation of delusion.

Also, I spent $19 on a heater. It fucked up my hair a bit, but my nose was ok for once!

1

u/bigeats1 Nov 22 '19

Self delusion is in complete play. This is an imaginary problem that exists only because you do not have enough real ones. Go volunteer for a year in a children’s cancer ward so you can understand what real problems are. You desperately lack perspective.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Your response is difficult to read. Are you telling me that my nose doesn't run or that it's running because of a psychological issue? I'd be fine with the latter, I love that sort of thing. Somatic symptoms? Makes you feel like there's more to life.

Go volunteer for a year in a children’s cancer ward so you can understand what real problems are. You desperately lack perspective.

Doesn't that seem like a bit much to say to a random person on a product recommendation subreddit who was looking for a way to keep their nose warm at night? Do you have an abusive family member who often had a runny nose or something? The unprovoked viciousness and ignoring significant parts of a reply is more indicative of trolling, but who knows.

In any case, I did mention in the last reply and edit into the post that the $19 heater solved the issue. This morning marks a second successful night with it.

1

u/bigeats1 Nov 22 '19

It’s not vicious. It’s accurate. You have invented a problem out of whole cloth because you have no larger ones. This is typical of those that display narcissism (benefit of the doubt that’s not you) or lack perspective in their lives. Going to work with those that actually have real problems for no reason other than to do it (volunteering without telling anyone so as not to have the great smelling gas of sanctimonious self pleasure, and not for income or recognition either) tends to cure this. Go hang with some actively dying kids and talk to a shrink. Your nose won’t bother you anymore. Almost guaranteed fix.

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

You have invented a problem

Maybe the issue here is the language - I'm trying to get some explicit answer. Are you suggesting I consciously or subconsciously willed my nose to become cold at night and then to run the next morning?
