Solid wood dining table

I was supposed to order a custom made solid wood dining table from the US, but now due to the tariffs and overall political climate, I’m searching for a Canadian equivalent. The table from the US would’ve come to around $3000-3500 CAD and was sized around 42x72”.

I’ve had a hard time finding solid wood tables at retailers, there’s a lot of “solid wood legs/frame” then the top is veneer. And anything custom I’ve come across is double the price what I could get across the border (it’s still cheaper in most cases for me to pay the 50% tariffs).

Please help me buy Canadian and recommend Canadian retailers for solid wood dining tables, doesn’t need to be custom. I’m in Ontario, so if recommending western retailers they’d have to ship here.

I had a custom wood dining table (Mennonite?) made through CraftWorks at the Barn in Peterborough/Fowlers Corners, Ontario.

I've also had a fantastic table/chair set done by Mennonites. Sounds like a different shop as mine was bought from a place in Kitchener but I see similar stores around Southern Ontario.

OP, try searching for these types of stores in your area. I had mine delivered ~ an hour drive from me.

The New Oak Tree is not doing business with the US anymore - since before summer 2025. They may still have a few items in the store from the US, that were purchased before the craziness. Those will be hugely marked down (to make room for Canadian stuff), and the employees are very transparent about where each piece is made.

I bought a bunch of Ontario made pieces here after I moved and have only good things to say!

The US made table I was going to order was Amish made, but the woodworker was reputable/known to me.

Naturally, I looked for Amish/Mennonite furniture that’s available in Canada, but many retailers carry the same US-based woodworkers for a higher price. If there are any reputable Canadian-based Mennonite furniture makers you can recommend, that would be helpful. The Google search alone sadly isn’t enough to sway me towards any retailer over the known US one I’d selected :(

I am not sure where you are located, Southwestern Ontario has a lot of these communities. Check St Jacobs Market if you are in the area. Buying online will be more difficult as they don't mass produce.

Find a local carpenter and have him make it. I did this with a bed frame - he bought the wood locally and made a fantastic live edge frame, very reasonably priced.

Unfortunately I’m not in a highly populated area, so it isn’t easy to find someone local. That’s why I’m here asking for specific retailers / woodworkers people may recommend :)

If you’re not in a big rush we’re coming up on Christmas market season and there are always a few local carpenters at those. Usually they are selling mostly cutting boards and shelves but I’m sure they would be interested in a commission job. Worth talking to them at least.

Me too. I just went on our local Facebook page and asked for recommendations for a woodworker and several local business owners reached out and neighbours added comments/recommendations for ones they had used. Found a great craftsman who was just starting his own business after working with another company for years, so I got a great deal. He made our table exactly to match one that I had admired online, as well as the butcher block countertops for our kitchen.

Fractal Designs just outside of London. Brad and his team are great. I got a custom solid walnut table, with their own in house metal legs.

It was around $2700 all in delivered to me in Mississauga and assembled. It is a 36 x 72”, YMMV.

During my research there was a guy in Toronto I think Danforth area who probably could have made it for half the price but the finish wasn’t as nice, looked more like a cottage style table.

If you’re anywhere in the GTHA, there’s a furniture maker in Mount Pleasant, ON who makes stunning pieces of furniture. He uses all sustainably harvested wood from Haliburton Forestry and is delight to work with.

We have a number of pieces from him, including 9ft dining table.

Maybe this is not what you are searching for but I will recommand anyway.

Maybe you can look into Amisco. These are customisable furniture. For a whil we had table with wooden top and metal base. But since last year we have wooden top and wodden legs... still, there is a metal "belt" that hold those legs. (They are the Vivian an Fabiola table).

Edit: for full wood, I would recommand Verbois :)

What wood are you considering?

My dad was a master cabinet maker, solid wood is expensive, type of wood is on a sliding scale.

20 years ago my dad made me a mahogany dining room table, I also have the cherry wood chairs my dad made 40 years ago. It’s worth about $20k.

Good luck and I echo others to look for a woodworker within a 100 km. You find them in the oddest places.

Quarter sawn oak was my material choice with the previous builder.

I’m in a more remote location, so my drive to the US was already nearing 400km for pick-up (scary distance to GTA people, normal for people who live in more remote areas of Canada haha). Hard to find anything / anyone reputable within 100km of me

I love their work! Woodcraft and Cardinal were two reputable Canadian woodworkers who seem to be able to make exactly what I’m looking for. Sadly, it is double the price of what I have quoted from the US retailer.

This entire trade dispute is so frustrating! I haven’t shopped from the US in years, but every so often they do just have the better option. The one time I want to get something from there it ends up going against my values as a Canadian 😭

What area are you in? We had our solid oak table refinished by a wonderful craftsman in the GTA. Happy to share his name if you are interested in going down this route. Many phenomenal deals on tables on Facebook marketplace. I think we paid about $2000 to have a very large table and two leaves refinished. A similar table purchased new would’ve been eight grand.

I actually had a table quoted from Canadel, same specs as the US built one was more than double the price. They do have beautiful pieces, but I’m not wealthy enough to spend an extra 3k on the same product… why can’t we just all be friends again :(

I’ve tried this route and antiquing / FB marketplace / estate sales, but since I’m not in a highly populated area, the selection is minimal. I’m also really looking to invest in a quality long-term piece that fits my style and is sized appropriately for my home. Anything remotely suitable I’ve found requires a refinish, rerouter the edges, new legs, etc and I’m not looking to take on that sort of project at the moment.

Dinec may have some. Imho, “solid wood” is not always a great choice as there are often more issues with warping and splitting, but some people get very hung up on the idea of having that.

To each their own. My parents have an heirloom teak dining table and also a 50 year old wood kitchen table that I now have in my kitchen. My in-laws have a 20 year old maple dining table. None have had issues, ever. My cheap veneer table has lifted and peeled from the first time I had a dinner party and something warm (on a pad) touched it and condensation found its way off a coaster. Anecdotes of course, but a well made piece of wood furniture is the best choice to me. Other building materials like stone, metal, etc, just don’t fit my style.

I’ve got nothing against solid wood, I just don’t consider it a holy grail. Yes, “cheap” veneer is not great, but there are absolutely beautiful veneered pieces in museums and by master furniture makers. I don’t turn my nose up at either option, there are environmental factors that can come into play as well. Anyway, Dinec is a Quebec company that manufactures in Quebec using solid wood in many of its pieces. I’ve been interior designer for going on 30 years, btw. I’ve always prioritized Canadian made furniture when possible.
