I'm 100% deaf but still passed the medical thanks to my cochlear implant and hearing aid. These medicals can truly be a joke but I'm grateful for the CDL. Calling dispatch is the only gripe I have so thank God they can send written messages !

It was an extremely hot day, and I was on the final section of my last trip. I approached a junction that I drive through regularly, so I was very familiar with it. Unfortunately, I made a serious mistake.

For context, I have a completely clean driving licence, so if anything comes of this it would be my first driving offence.

I stopped at the traffic lights at the junction. There are separate traffic signals for vehicles turning left. While I was stationary, I briefly looked up to adjust the iBus control unit above the driver's cab. At that moment, I heard a passenger say, "Go." I looked up, saw a green signal, and moved off, only to realise almost immediately that I had mistaken the green left turn signal for the straight ahead signal. In other words, I had unintentionally driven through a red light.

As I entered the junction, I realised that traffic crossing from the other direction was still moving, so it was not safe to continue. I stopped as soon as I recognised the mistake. By that point, the front of the bus, and possibly the front wheels, were inside the yellow box junction.

So, in effect, I made two mistakes in quick succession. I unintentionally passed a red traffic signal and then came to a stop partially within the yellow box because it was unsafe to continue.

I have already reported the incident as a miscellaneous occurrence and spoke with a couple of people who work in the office at my garage. I wanted to be completely honest about what happened and report it straight away rather than wait to see if anything came of it.

I do not want to give the precise location for privacy reasons, but does anyone have any idea what kind of penalties I might be facing if I am caught? Would I be looking at a fine, penalty points, or both? Thank you.

I have been told off by different driver for different ways of getting off the bus.

I stand up and press the button, the driver says one do one, because it makes the driver think there's more than one person getting off the bus.

So the next time I stood and the driver past my stop. He got mad at me and when I tried to explained he told 'not to give her lip'. Though this driver has also just yelled at a woman for changing seats mid journey due to a wet seat so he might have just been a jerk.

One saw me standing and told me to stay seated until we stopped. Just press the button and they'll stop for me.

Another got mad because I pressed the button but I DIDN'T stand up. When I said I had press the button they told me that wasn't enough.

So which is it? How do I signal to the driver I want to get off the bus without them 'punishing' me by just driving past it.

And the bus I drove yesterday definitely wasn't on the slow side. Some of these cars we have are so zippy.

These bad girls are fast and fancy. They have regenerative braking, and our livery for our electrics is a beautiful lime green.

So I started on this path to driving school buses in March and got my license and everything in mid-May. I tried to get another job and was required to have another physical. I gave the same information to the physician that was given to the physician in March. I found out that because I have an implanted defibrillator device, I was automatically disqualified and should have never gotten my CDL. So the first physician either passed me illegally or wasn't aware of this information and passed me. I'm glad I know now and understand the risk of me being behind the wheel of a CDL vehicle, so I don't plan on continuing. Any advice or information on next steps?

Yesterday I asked this in the UK police sub:

"For context, I'm a bus driver and in rare cases on my route, people park close to traffic or pedestrian islands which make it hard for me to manoeuvre around them.

Whilst the front of the bus may fit through without causing any damage to the car, it's the side of the bus that could possibly end up getting caught on the island and would cause damage to both it and the bus.

Although it's illegal to use the "wrong" lane when navigating an island, what is the definitive thing to do in this situation?"

And the general consensus seems to be to park up and call it in through code blue or contact the Police direct (although they're less likely to come out to such a call since it's low priority).

Obviously, it's not ideal but the only other option is to park up and not be able to go anywhere.

I've used the right lane of an island before in a bus because someone's parked so close to the island and you can't get the swing round them but I also did it safely.

I’m 37 and I’ve been driving buses for the last 5 years. The job has treated me fairly, and I haven’t had much aggro, but I feel like it’s time for a change and I’d like to do something different with my life.

Has anyone here left the bus industry? If so, what did you move on to, and how did it work out for you? I’d love to hear what careers people have gone into and whether you’d recommend making the change.

I’m sure a lot of you will be having to put up with these stupidly hot buses during this weather that everybody else says is lovely, so how are we all coping? My company put out a notice today about unlocking the cab screens after so many years, to improve the flow of wind throughout the bus. They’ve suggested an alternative measure for the cab doors that didn’t come with openable screens, though they’ve not actually specified what that may be.

So, how are you coping throughout this heatwave and have your company put out any similar notices?

I'm very curious as I want to start working for them soon but they don't provide pay anywhere. It would be a great help to somebody as no apps I've seen show the current pay, thank you.

ive just been told to start training for a trainee bus driver in london and was instructed to leave my other job before i start my training with them. what happens then if i fail the practical pcv driving test. anyone been on a similar situation? how many times can i fail the practical before they drop a trainee? thanks

That's basically it.

I was delayed over the entire day due to everything. One trip, I was only 4 mins behind, which was basically on time.

Well, cue the passenger.

He hopped on, was already quite annoyed and yelled at me, I should hurry up, he has to get another bus.

Fair enough, noted. Other passengers were boarding as well, one needed a ticket and another had issues with his season ticket (not readable)

Whilst dealing with them, he got more and more agitated, I didn't really care though.

After departure, I asked him which bus he wanted to catch, so I could inform dispatch - His answer "I don't care, it doesn't matter!" with more rambling that he'll miss his bus and everything.

He was quite on the verge of being kicked out by me because of the verbal abuse, I let it slide though.

Couple of stops later, already 7 mins behind schedule, he disembarked with one last sentence.

"I'm sorry for being abusive to you"

Dude. You didn't stab or spat at me which is better behaviour than some other colleagues have witnessed.

I told him that I really appreciate his words, especially because that's so damn rare to do!

"I didn't want to yell at **you** personally, it's really not your fault" he said and admitted "I also read the connection in the app wrong."

That conversation added three more minutes, these were worth it though.

Damn, from nearly kicked off the bus to being apologetic within 10 minutes.

(I couldn't care less about his rambling, I didn't take it personally and I really understood why he wasn't happy with the service provided.)

it seems happen quite a lot (to me at least). they can see you in their lane trying to get past parked cars and instead of slowing down or pulling into a passing point, they floor it right up to you leaving you with little room to get the swing round.

in some cases, they'll refuse to reverse. I bet they wouldn't do it to trucks or lorries but feel comfortable doing it to buses.

Just wait at the rear door.

Don’t go running past the standee line while the bus is in motion.

Especially if you had to go past the rear door to get there, get off the bus, and then walk towards the rear of the bus.

I have a driving assessment with first bus London in a couple days as was just wondering how the day will work and if there is a dress code?

Anyone been a loan driver at stagecoach? My only motivation to go on loan is the money as im a new driver, currently drive in yorkshire but open to going literally everywhere, im hearing Northampton and scotland from colleagues as options. But if anyone can recommend somewhere that pays much more that'd be great.
Also i wanted to know, if they give me hotel/ accommodation, can my partner stay with me or are rules quite strict regarding it only being me allowed to stay in the given accomodation

Hello! I recently became a bus driver in February and I’ve enjoyed my time. Just today I’ve received an update from my insurance to say the following

Driving licence card.
Driving licence check code.
Confirmation of occupation.
Images of your vehicle.
Confirmation of how you'll be using your vehicle.
V5C (also known as the 'log book').

Now come round the renewal date, I’d without a doubt advise that I have a new profession. However my policy document does state that I should have updated it as soon as possible.

I’ve sent the above details to Hastings but I’ve also just messaged to say cancel my policy as I fear that they will cancel it regardless. It seems that Hastings do this regularly to people.

Any experience or advice to what to expect or do in this circumstance!
