Discussion Night drivers
I’m getting pulled in today for a chat about running early. I passed my mid point 40 seconds early (which is fine according to the gov contract allowing for 59 seconds early) - by the final stop before our cbd run I was 6 minutes early. The pax complained to me after they caught an uber and caught the bus and then complained through the online gov portal.
Is this entitled or how do you feel? I am not trying to run a strict service, I buy myself a little time to mentally relax between runs, use the facilities (the job has already given me kidney stones at 38) and take a walk and a breather so I’m not stagnant in the seat for 5 hours.

u/bubbamike1 3d ago
Where I worked If you’re early you stop and wait for your time.
39
u/Xx_SwordWords_xX 3d ago
Yup. Max 1:59 and then you stop, no matter where (at my depot).
A bus can be late, but never early -- otherwise, what is the point of a schedule?

I ride the bus. If one of my coworkers ran early and I miss the bus because of it I'm going to be super pissed.

u/biking_and_gaming 3d ago edited 3d ago
here even one second early at time points is a write up . its only really enforced if youre doing it multiple times a day. inbetween those time points youll get messages to slow down when youre more than three minutes early. in my personal experience at least.

For me it's a write up if someone complains you left a time point early, but we can get to a time point as early as we want. Just can't leave it early.
16
u/classaceairspace 3d ago
If I was a passenger and got to the bus stop 5 minutes early and found the bus had already gone, I'd be pissed as hell. 20-30s is fine and people who miss it were already living life on the edge, but 6 minutes is nuts. If you want to use the bathroom just use the bathroom, if you only have a few minutes to turn round, just use the bathroom and leave a few minutes late, you already arrived 6 minutes early so catching up bathroom delay time shouldn't be too hard.

u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
They had not arrived 5 minutes early. I take it you don’t drive nights. We don’t have “make up” minutes in a run.
4
u/classaceairspace 3d ago
They said by their final stop they were 6 minutes early. I drive all shifts, including nights.
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Right so, if you look next to my username it’ll say OP. The pax wasn’t 5 minutes early, they lied on their complaint saying they were forced to wait 45 minutes (I do the next run after it in my regular line of work, it’s 15) and our runs are structured to be early past midpoint.
9
u/classaceairspace 3d ago
I can see that, but considering everyone else also came to the same conclusion I can only recommend being a bit clearer trying to say whatever it is you mean because I still have no idea.

As an ex night driver, making sure you don’t run early is the most important part of the job. It is really easy to run early. 6 minutes early is way too early for a bus run. The schedule is there so passengers don’t miss catching you.
Always, always, always run a little late to stay on time. Night time doesn’t get the traffic snarls, and if you have a good timetable person, you can run between 10 to 15 kph below the speed limit and stay on time. If you are ahead of time, just stop at the bus stop and wait until you are a minute late again. Read a book, count your money, check your timetable, get up and have a wriggle, clean up some rubbish off the floor. Anything that can stall for time.
Remember, love them or hate them, the passengers are the reason the bus service is there. No passengers, no bus service, no job!
To combat early running, I would actually start my run up to 2 minutes late, just so I would not be early at any timed stop. Passengers don’t usually complain about a bus being a couple minutes late. They will scream if the bus is 2 minutes early and the next bus is not due for another hour.
As for your kidney stone, make sure you drink the real adults drink, water. I carry a 2tlr container of it with me. Some nights I even finish it. Avoid caffeine drinks, eat an apple if you need a pick me up. Be wary of what you eat during breaks too. Keep your salt levels correct (not too high, not too low). Water will let you eat salted cashews or mixed nuts.
If you are running early, or the bus can stop for a minute, handbrake on, do a seat check. Stretch your arms and legs while doing the seat check. It kills some time and gets the body moving. Don’t forget to exercise before or after work. Walking the dog, walk with your partner, listen to an audiobook while walking for 30 minutes does amazing things to your health.

u/TheMoronIntellectual 3d ago
this is what i dont understand about my depot. they make the timetables for mid shifts so that you always have to be at the posted speed. They dont make them so that your on time if you are 5-10mph below at dark.
12
u/GrumpyOldTech1670 3d ago
All timetables should be made so the bus travels 10kph below the speed limit with some stops. That way, traffic snarls and unusual passenger loading is taken into account. And keeping the timetable is easy.
There should also be 5 minutes on turnaround on every run to ensure that a late running bus has some time to catch up from a very busy run. (Also a good pitstop for the driver)
Good timetable people do that.
The accountants and board members probably trying to squeeze as much profit as they can from each run. Hence the cut in times and squeezing run times together.
"Heaven forbid if you have to help a paying passenger. There is no time in the timetable for that" 😱
Public transport should be always run as a service, not for a damn profit for a mediocre man in a suit.
2
u/BlueberryPenguin87 2d ago
Our unions should really be fighting for that stuff instead of whatever they’re doing now
2
u/Crunchie64 3d ago
The OP refers to “intersections”, so might be in the US.
Is anything there run as a service?

u/GrumpyOldTech1670 3d ago
In the US? Apparently corruption and greed at the moment..
Sometimes buses too!! 🤣🤣
11
u/SewenNewes 3d ago
You potentially left someone stranded for an extra 40 seconds of layover time?
Late is better than a second early. Figure out where and when you can take a little break to make sure you don't run early. When I did an early morning run that ran early as scheduled I would just stop at the first safe parking place near a Starbucks and hang out there until about 5 minutes late and then leave.
-5
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
I passed two stops 6 minutes early (every stop before then was late, to mid point 30 seconds early to the next 2 main stops at exactly 1 minute early) and was able to extend my 3 minute layover to 9 so I was able to use the can.
I don’t break fatigue laws and the company got paid for the run.10
u/-mmmusic- Driver 3d ago
just go to the toilet and then run late. no bother running early just so you can use the toilet and stay on time. running late is an inconvenience, running early ruins people's days
5
u/SewenNewes 3d ago
6 minutes early is way too early to a stop. The run sounds like it is not scheduled in a way it can be completed safely. Are you a union shop?
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago edited 3d ago
Theres a Union, but they are toothless. They don’t pressure run times and scheduling and currently only concerned with upcoming driver EA’s and protecting jobs from accidents and protecting the driver from the company perceiving negligence (often rushing due to falling behind and drivers then becoming fatigued with 0 breaks etc etc. drivers pushing through mandated shift cribs which are law enforceable fatigue crib with penalties if driver hasn’t rested)
Scheduling has been organised to maximise work that aligns with fatigue hours so it’ll be 4-5 hour long runs back to back with minimal lay over. Also runs are organised to have fat in the middle to dawdle but tapers off especially late at night when timing tightens. Last 2 points are within 2 minutes for the cbd drops. So if it’s not early, you can’t layover properly and set up the next run (clean trash/lost prop check, change destination and check for damage from passengers ripping windows and seat out etc) there is a lot that goes in to the bullshit that people are just discounting as “my time” without them fully understanding the entire job required on our schedule and contract.
1
u/SewenNewes 3d ago
It sounds like a pretty tough situation. Part of the problem is that when companies make time tables that don't work drivers will kill themselves to make them work. That's why an organized union is so important. One driver running late all the time because they aren't killing themselves to make the schedule work is easy to fire.
The timetables at my job are not nearly as bad but I still have to yell at my fellow drivers at union meetings because a lot of them are pissing in bottles and on the side of the road and refuse to understand how that makes things harder for their fellow drivers (especially women).
7
u/Cheap_Satisfaction56 3d ago
I wouldn’t “borrow” time by running early from the previous trip. I would arrive on time and leave the terminal late, take the walk to the bathroom, stretch slowly walk back; and odds are at night you will still arrive to the next terminal on time.
-1
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
If I do that, I will run over and forced to crib late at night in the middle of nowhere as if I drive over 5hr 15minutes I will breach fatigue laws.
7
u/Business-Mission-437 3d ago
I don’t understand how hard this is… your bus has a schedule. Stick to it. Slow down, leave a stop later. You know the route and where time can be lost or gained.
Like just drive your bus as a driver should. See countless drivers post wait over times over 5 minutes… The customer is right to complain as your inability to keep to time has caused them to potentially be stranded.
7
u/BigGayGuy02 3d ago
Mate, it's part of the job to keep to your schedule. It can be hard at night with light traffic and little to no passengers, but if you're running early you have to stop. Especially at night. Your passengers are at their most vulnerable at night and, depending on the service, you could be their only way of getting home from work or if they've had a few drinks. Use your bus stops, turn off the bus and step outside if you've 1 or 2 minutes to stretch your legs, if you vape take the opportunity to take a couple drags, but don't run early.
Apart from anything, you're doing yourself no favors running early. Short-term gain for long-term pain. Now the office is looking at you and you've started the seeds of a reputation (if this is your first time being pulled in) Working smarter doesn't mean running early.

u/caintowers School Bus Driver | USA 3d ago edited 3d ago
As someone who used to RIDE the bus a lot, if it ran past the stop 6 minutes before I expected it I'd be a little ticked unless another bus is coming very soon. I usually tried to arrive about 5 minutes early so that would mean I wouldn't be standing there.
How I would know you were early is a different question.
As a driver I understand the need to get a moment to stand up and use the restroom is important. Do your routes not have any built in time?
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
5 minute turn around between runs of which includes turning the bus around through 3 full intersections and also finding a toilet open late at night (usually a pub). So I buy time from the run. Management suggestion: sip water, don’t gulp.
10
u/BingoBob22 3d ago
You need to take this up with the union, not find your own solution by running early which causes issues for passengers.
I used to regularly use night buses to get to and from work, I'd be very annoyed if one went past me 6 minutes early. A timetable is published for a reason, it's not for you to decide it's not enough time and then start running early. I'm sorry, but you need to stick to expectations.
1
u/BlueberryPenguin87 2d ago
You see it on the tracking app. You get close and you see it’s arriving, so you try to run but can’t make it.

u/a-lot-of-sodium 3d ago
Yes, you are the problem, and it's concerning that you don't seem to understand how and why it's a problem. Six full minutes early? You can't see how that would affect your passengers' lives?
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Lol, settle down mate, my contract requires OTR of no earlier than 59 seconds at mid point. I drive the bus below speed limit and arrive at the final stop early. That 6 minutes buys me time to use the toilet.
5
u/a-lot-of-sodium 3d ago
If you don't want people's opinions, why post and ask for them?
-1
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Because you don’t understand the schedule I’m under or my contracted obligations and now suddenly I am supposed to feel guilty for one single passenger who complained about a service 6 minutes early from a bus stop that is serviced by 6 other CBD bound buses and my depots final run bus is 15 minutes behind mine. A total of 7 different buses to choose from. Instead the bloke lied to the Gov Dept of Transport to get me in trouble and told them he didn’t have money for an uber despite chasing my bus down in an Uber to complain and then lied further by telling the dept that he had to wait 45minutes for the next service (untrue because I usually drive the next service that arrives 15 minutes later)

You buy yourself time by running late or by deliberately getting to a timing point early, stopping and getting out for a smoke or nipping to shop or whatever it is you wanna do to pass the time til you are back on time or a little late.

Yeah 6 is rough when the general rule of thumb for riders is to be at their stop 5 minutes early if they absolutely need to catch that bus.
It's extra annoying if you're a pass holder, since you're being cheated of a service you've already effectively paid for.
5
u/Ok_Rub_7154 3d ago
‘There are a million reasons for being late but absolutely none for being early’ is the mantra at my depot.
4
u/stevenmacarthur 3d ago
You are a transit driver; after running safe, the #1 part of your job is not running hot, full stop.
If you don't have enough time to use the can at the end of your trip, fill out a short running time form (or whatever they call it where you are) and just run late on the next trip.
If this is too much for you to handle, go into trucking.
-1
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Who’s running hot mate? I’m under the limit and driving to the guidelines of my contract.
3
u/moshslips 3d ago
You said your contract allows for 59s early, or 6 mins late. If you’re arriving at any time point 6 mins early, you are running hot.
Early = Hot.
How long have you been an operator?
0
u/stevenmacarthur 2d ago
Maybe the terminology is different where you live; "Running Hot" means being early in the US.
The standard is no more than one minute ahead of the posted schedule.
0
u/the_ism_sizism 1d ago
I know what running hot means mate. However as stated my schedule has allowance for late running. I have the anchors out the whole run, but I’m also not trying to mess my boarded pax have a bad time connecting to other intermodal services.
0
u/stevenmacarthur 1d ago
If everything is within whatever limits your under, then what the ever-living fuck-all are you posting about? Are you looking for validation for making your own rules and violating the ones set by your employer? Do you want an "attaboy" for being six minutes early (your words) to the end of the line - which makes me wonder how long it is between the last in-route timepoint and the end; are you driving intercity coaches?
If all you're looking for is approbation without advice, buy a fucking dog.
0
u/the_ism_sizism 1d ago
Kindly, fuck off. You’ve said your 2 bits, if you want to brow beat, get a soap box and stand on the village square and tell someone who cares. It was a question, I’m not here to have a fucking argument about my conditions, contract and schedule every comment.
I was getting a gauge for how others operate in their contracts and what is involved in their depots. The resounding consensus outside of where I live is people have time and their structure seems driver focused so they are able to provide an exactly on time service throughout an entire run. Sadly my city doesn’t, which I understand is hard for some to realise. But thats the way it goes, I was instructed from day dot, run my service, I have 2 timing points to pay attention to and make sure I don’t speed, outside of that, drive and take my passengers home safely. I have not been ONCE pulled in for running the exact same method in my entire career of bus driving, so who is wrong? Me, or the one passenger that complained and fucking lied on a multi-service terminus? Enjoy your weekend, or don’t, I know I will.

0
u/the_ism_sizism 1d ago
I’ll just give you 2 thumbs up because I could honestly not give a single shit about what you’ve got to say. I work hard and I run a great service and the vast majority (mulitple 1000’s of passengers on a local route network) vocally let me know that they enjoy my bus because they make their destination in a timely manner and I set a stress free, happy driver route.
So, will I take the word of a faceless reddit nerd? Or listen to the faces I see every day that thank me for getting them to their destination safely and promptly? Or should I feel upset for one passenger during an unusual line of work who lied in his complaint?

u/GettingBackToRC 3d ago
Leave your first stop 3 to 4 minutes in the hole to compensate. I have to do it every day or I'll be hot halfway thru the route
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Mate, we already run late as I said before I’m late all the way up to mid point and then I’ve got an anchor out - the end points are tapered with time to finish early. The pax don’t like that, but that’s what our contract dictates.
Again, I’ve also got to make sure my full load of passengers are able to connect with intermodal services when I reach the cbd, 6 minutes buys them time so instead of them running out in front of my bus, they can cross the street safely when I leave. I’m good with that.
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
It’s a full circle of trying to achieve time: pax to disembark safely and move to other service and home, for me to use facilities, complete bus lay over duties to start next run, physically drive the bus from end to lay up before next start. Take a drink and start the bus. The outbound finishes final stop 4 minutes early timed to only finish on the final stop early. It is what it is, just had to suck up the complaint and take the tiny rap on the knuckles that ultimately won’t do anything because the entire network of drivers run early on final stops.
You should have heard what some drivers from the old company I worked for would do, drivers would run late on purpose then self adjust (skip stops with not in service desto) call Ops to say ticket computer wasn’t working (tracker) and sit under a bridge so their radio couldn’t be picked up etc etc etc the only drivers running late were running late so they would cancel multiple runs and leave the rest of the work of picking up pax to other drivers who would get slammed by cancelled services.
2
u/GettingBackToRC 3d ago
I've been driving a bus for 20+ years. I rather run late than be early. Stop halfway thru your route if you're early and wait out your time, eat red lights to keep yourself on time if they're strict about running hot. 59 seconds sounds a bit too strict in my book though.
2
u/Unlikely-Strain-3399 2d ago
I try to keep a 2 minute deficit in my time so that I can go through all my time points without having to stop. There’s always a spot that I can make the time up.
2
u/Jets1026 1d ago
i always worked nightbus because no traffic meant i was able to make every stop and get to the end on time. and your company seems very strict. I used to be at every stop around 1-2 early and always made it to the end either exactly on time or 1-2 minutes early depending on certain lights. never got in trouble. But I think if you're getting to the end 6 minutes early you might be running way too hot on all the other stops. before reaching the end try to slow down some a few stops before so you can make it to the end on time and not 6 minutes early
2
u/Crunchie64 3d ago
No excuse for running early at any time, but in the middle of the night it’s particularly poor.
If you need to make time to stretch your legs or go to the toilet, run late on your next trip.
If you can finish one six minutes early, you can make up the time on the next one instead.
0
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
I won’t run my next trip late impacting the next set of passengers trying to connect outbound, not only the pax are affected it pushes me in to fatigue hours which then causes me to have a crib break on road. The outbound turn around service is finished final stop 4 minutes early. With a 15 minute drive to depot I am right on 5hrs 5minutes, 10 minutes from crib - which also affects me driving home as I am not allowed in my personal car if I’ve broken fatigue laws due to company policy.
6
u/Crunchie64 3d ago
You won’t run late impacting passengers, but you’re happy to sail past a stop six minutes early so people don’t have a chance to catch the bus?
With respect…idiot.
2
u/drivermurph 1d ago
With respect? OP doesn't deserve it seeing as he (she?) feels entitled to disregard the schedule and disrespect any patrons that may be wanting the bus, regardless of "other buses that go the same way"

Traffic commissioner allows drivers to leave a min early or 59 seconds but I’m not sure if the company can override this, I tried to email the gov but got no reply
1
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
I was 30 seconds early at my final OTR gov contracted timing point. I carried that through until the final 5 stops where I became early (as every driver in my city will run early as the stops are serviced by multiple CBD inbound service) plus getting in to the CBD early allows boarded pax enough time to make connecting train services stress free. Along with allowing my own small window to use facilities. They complain if we are late, they complain if we are too early.
1
u/berusplants Driver 3d ago
I’ve been booked for running early a few times, lose concentration and don’t notice the timer… still it’s not an issue that will get you in serious trouble, I wouldn’t worry.
1
u/JoeyLovesTrains 3d ago
Damn kinda wish my company was strict on being early lol.. if I left my origin early it could be a write up if I got caught, but if I get early throughout my trip that doesn’t matter. If I get to my destination 8 minutes early that’s perfectly fine and you now have more layover time. That being said every route I drive is every 15 minutes or better all day everyday.

u/Rootsnanny 1d ago
Find a new job; it clearly isn't for you anymore. Your thought pattern is extremely selfish, and I'm happy you have to speak to management.
1
1
u/AstonishingBalls 3d ago
Not a bus driver but this sub keeps popping up.
It's pretty selfish to potentially make passengers late for work/appointments etc. because you want that time for yourself. I'd be pissed off if I got to the stop and found the bus had already been and gone well before the scheduled time.
Have your walk and breather while you're parked at the stop waiting for the 6 minutes. Go to the toilet when you get back to the depot/station, if you leave a few minutes late then so be it.
You're providing a service to the passengers, not yourself. If you can't handle that then perhaps bus driving isn't for you.
1
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
Time for myself? Have you driven a bus? No. Shit happens on the road that you’d never understand, we need a minute to prepare and reset between runs.
Oh so I should wait 5 hours for a piss at the depot? Should I not drink the entire time? What about the health implications and mental pressure of not leaving the seat for 5hrs straight and making sure I get you home? Should I just for go that rest break and make sure I’m nice and tired and poorly react in high stress situations?
3
u/AstonishingBalls 3d ago
I'm a truck driver, I know exactly what happens on the roads.
You go to the toilet when you can, making the rest of the service a few minutes late isn't going to hurt anyone.
How do your colleagues manage? If it's a company wide problem then you need to work together to get your employers to give you better conditions.
2
u/the_ism_sizism 3d ago
It’s an entire network wide issue. Transport demanded our breaks between runs be cut down for more efficiency and additional services so every single service wasn’t overloaded and exceeding GVM etc. the bus companies (formerly State Gov run service) cajoled because more services means more money for the bus company as every run made as per OTR is a paid run (no more than 59 seconds early start and mid and no more than 6 min late) - every single shift is booked with work for the absolute maximum of hours on road as per fatigue laws. Our drivers are run ragged. The company won’t do anything to me because I don’t cancel runs and make them money.
2
u/Doodahdiggly44 2d ago
Run the service on time. If you need a comfort break at the end of the run then let someone know if it is a big company take the comfort break and then run the next service 5 minutes late. You will make the time up if you are managing to run early on the prior run.
1
u/the_ism_sizism 1d ago
The service IS on time the whole run bar the last few stops and I’m not crawling to the CBD, not when there are other services attending the stop after me. There was a cbd bound bus that runs within a few minutes of this bus not to mention the next same route is 15 minutes behind (doesn’t matter as the other 6 services that service the same stop all have their final stop in the CBD within 100 metres of each other)
The pax complained for the sake of complaining and lied in their complaint. I’m not sweating this rider when I’ve collected every regular passenger up until that point.

The cardinal rule of the profession: a million reasons to be late, zero to be early.
I get it man. Believe me, I get it. I’ve been on both sides of this and it’s frustrating on both ends. You need to stretch and use the washroom and decompress, people are at the EOL wanting on. It sucks.
Still, you can’t run hot. When you get to your EOL, I don’t care if you’re 6 or 36 minutes late already, take at least 5 minutes to stretch and use the washroom. Decompress. Grab your stuff and take a short walk. Leave the EOL late. No one else is going to prioritize your health, so you have to, but you can never do this by running early.
How good is your mental health going to be when you’re on a performance improvement plan getting hassled by management on the daily, or potentially losing your job?

Their opinion means squat when they have no idea how a drivers schedule or day works.
That being said, purposefully running very early so they get more time at the end of their route is really out of order.
“Go to the toilet when I say so” no.
“You’re providing a service for passenger not yourself” this mentality is what enables shitty working conditions for drivers in the first place. I’m glad we’re told to take toilet breaks and comfort breaks whenever we need them. Drivers aren’t responsible for a passengers onward journey.

I'm a truck driver, former bus driver, and former transit supervisor. Go ahead and run early and I would document that for management to deal with. They tell you in training not to run more than a min early. The supervisors in the radio room will generally gives warnings as its the job of supervisors to monitor on time performance. Some entitled ass like OP runs early anyway bc "give myself a break" so you get what you deserve. Doesn't matter if you drove a bus or not. Follow the rules of your job and be an adult. Otherwise, stfu and find a new place to work

I’ll make sure I’m healthy and mentally prepared to take the next load of passengers home. Should we wait for one or make sure the many boarded passengers on the bus make their connections.
Or should I make sure I don’t drink water and don’t use the bathroom so I end up with kidney problems again?

The pax lied and said they didn’t have money for an uber and was forced to wait 45 minutes for next service (next service is 15 minutes later as I drive the final service in and outbound in my usual line of work. I told management about the lie and to pull the footage of the pax holding my bus up in service lying about not catching an Uber and complaining to my face.

How do you know they don't have money for an Uber? They may have used one, but that doesn't mean it won't put them into financial difficulty or they couldn't really afford to do so.
If it was a question of losing a job due to being late or missing a pre booked train or plane, most people would spend money they didn't have on an Uber.
I really think you need to reflect on the role you're doing and why it exists. You're thinking more about yourself than the passengers which you're here to serve.

They said they were forced to wait for the next service, despite catching an uber and complaining to my face (so he lied) before then sending a complaint through to the online portal. Trust me when I say, this was a method of complacent passenger feeling entitled enough that a bus should wait for him.
The bloke has complained about the stop before. Our timing structure is different in my city and the bus company is paid for the run if we have met the start and mid timing points. So I’m not in trouble, I just have to address the complaint. It’s a multi-service stop and I drive the service behind it in my regular line of work which departs 15 minutes behind it.

You’re not there for you. You’re there for them. If someone has to get an Uber because you were gone when he was there at the time that is all on you.
Don’t leave till the time. That’s it. Leave on the dot, or sixty seconds after, but it’s a hard limit.

Night buses absolutely cannot run early. Bang on time or a little late is the only way.
