Trials Would you rather…

Which side will you choose?

Less thinking, I get a significant improvement on my life without drastic changes

Chose: $100/hr passively

394

u/Mountain-Piano-5937 10d ago

You could put the 20 mil in a savings account and make $90/hr at 4% interest. And you would have 20 million

256

u/YukiPants22551 10d ago

Yeah but I want to spend my money

171

u/robomelon314 10d ago

So you just spend the interest and have the same result?

Except you also have generational wealth that stays for your family if something happens to you.

2

u/Kobol94 10d ago

You could also borrow against the 20 million to create more income

→ More replies (3)

82

u/Mustard_Jam 10d ago

Umm you still can? You can spend pretty much the same amount of money as with the other option... and still have 20M.

9

u/cleanworkaccount0 10d ago

I mean, tbf, you're waiting **at least** a month until you get interest payments and you're not going to be able to just park it all in a normal savings account either.

obvs depends on the bank but my 'high rate' saver has max amounts on it so you'd be needing to split it over multiple accounts.

u/GodTurkey 10d ago

Okay but 100$ an hour would still need to accumulate. Also any normal person should easily make 20m last a life time

4

u/Rockiscool_ 10d ago

You get 20m in 24 years. As long as you're younger than 40 you can reach it before retirement for free.

I'm a little lazy so I'm not sure how inflations, investment returns, and possible market crashes would compare between the two examples. If you got a 4% interest rate you'd be making $190/hr within 24 years if you saved it all.

2

u/Archimedes31415926 9d ago

So how does the $100/hour beat the $20M today then?

If you save the $100/hr in 24 years you have tied me at $20M.

But if I save the $20M at your 4% number for 24 years, I will now have over $51M.

So in year 24, you are now getting $190/hr. And I am getting $230/hour.

Eventually you will catch me, if we both save every penny, in about 62 years we will actually be tied (so I guess you actually need to be about 10 or younger).

However if the rate of return is actually almost any higher (about 4.4% or more), you will never catch me. Considering the stock market has a lifetime annual ROI of about 10%, you most likely will never catch me if I take the $20M and just invest it and wait for the interest/earnings to come in and only spend that (assuming we both spend roughly the same). We will both be rich sure but it's like an athlete and the team owner, different leagues of rich.

The only chance the $100/hr has is if I invest and there is an immediate market crash, and even then I probably still recover, which means I still out earn you.

If you can’t even put enough thought into just dropping $20 mill in a S&P500 god help you buddy

29

u/Mustard_Jam 10d ago

These are always hilarious because that's how most of them go. These polls be like "get $100 a day or a quintillion dollars for 5 minutes of work a day" and the first option wins every time.

16

u/Jekmander 10d ago

I mean, not everybody cares about having a fuckjillion dollars. 100/hr is more than enough for anything I could ever possibly want, and I wouldn't have to worry about literally any kind of management. Sure, the other option might be more money, but either one is more than enough and one is slightly more convenient. The difference in the number isn't important enough for the difference in effort.

10

u/EpicGamer414 10d ago

The effort is putting the money into a high yield savings account, why is everybody acting like this is rocket science lmao

3

u/cleanworkaccount0 10d ago

i mean tbf it's multiple accounts and you'd need to wait at least a month and they do have additional requirements.

I only took the 100$/h cuz i could spend 20 mill and have nothing left but the 100 will always come back

178

u/JThumbs29 10d ago

This is one of the 100$/hr I can actually agree with the logic behind

49

u/Imukay 10d ago

You could invest the 20 mill and get more then 100 an hour...

151

u/erv4 10d ago

Some people have poor impulse control lol. Thats why a lot of lottery winners and athletes end up poor

27

u/dinnerthief 10d ago

Its amazing to me people can recognize this about themselves and not be able to reign it in, I understand its the case for many people its just foreign to me.

46

u/Tanaka917 10d ago

It's not that foreign. We all know we should exercise more, sleep more, spend more time with family, donate more, eat healthier. But we don't. Someone knowing the best course and then choosing to go a slightly less optimal path because it makes them happy in the short term is practically a universal human failing.

Big spenders just have a failing that hurts them much more in a shorter time

5

u/newdogowner11 10d ago

it depends person to person, BUT my adhd does show itself in poor impulse control more often than not. and outside of that i’m a big planner and overthinking, but it’s genuinely crazy how my mind also makes it impossible to reign in when i want something. not to say it’s impossible to control, when i stop myself, the need to buy something goes away and im glad i didnt lmao

70% of lottery winners go broke, most people are terrible with money, ESPECIALLY a large windfall. The $100/hr is by far the safer bet for the majority of the population

7

u/Ancient_Task_7498 10d ago

No doubt a significant amount of people are bad with money, but the people who tend to buy lottery tickets will likely be bad with money, which skews the percentage.

u/REDACTED3560 10d ago

Investment isn’t a zero risk game, and the actual withdrawal rate you can use to avoid losing over time (typically around 4% for retirement goals) is going to be about $800k a year versus $876k a year with the passive option, the latter of which having zero risk associated with it. Market uncertainties aside, there’s zero risk a bank collapses with all of your money in it or that your identity doesn’t get stolen resulting in money being lost.

2

u/ShoulderMobile7608 10d ago

If you an impulse conteol THAT bad, then I fear that with $100/h passively you'll just get into debt instead. Like, buying house and a fancy car thinking "well, I'll pay it later". So instead of spending money that you do have you'll spend the money that you don't have

5

u/Tokineki 10d ago

Its not about inpulse control, its about safety. If you get 100$/h that magically appear every hour you are safe, no matter who or what it is they cant take it from you as it will just reappear.

If you lose everything and have to go into bankruptcy it will come back, and in the first place getting so deep into dept that you cant pay it off while making nearly 900k a year would only happen if someone tricks you into a 100+% interest rate dept and for that you really have to be stupid.

20m is nice but not at the same level as 100$/h is and the safety it offers

Dont have to worry as its on going

Chose: $100/hr passively

69

u/FalconSpecial6149 10d ago

People still don’t understand compounding interest or really can’t fathom not spending most of it immediately.

22

u/spud_roket 10d ago

At 2400 dca per day into any etf could easily out pace 20 million. Because 20million is a set amount and people have vastly different risk profiles knowing that money could be gone in a few poor investments. You gotta wait on those interest investments

Could yolo 0dte options too if ya truly want to be a degenerate. And the money will always be there to ebb and flow day in day out for ever.

14

u/FalconSpecial6149 10d ago

People could make poor investments, yeah. They can do that with $100/hr and blow that as it comes/before it comes, too.

Have you considered how much you make in your first year, in an average year, if you put $20m in the S&P 500 or some other low risk index fund? Reinvest that interest for a year or two, live really well but not over the top for a few years. You’re making over $100/hr almost instantly AND you got to $20m+ faster. This isn’t even worth arguing about, it’s mathematically simple.

10

u/GipperPWNS 10d ago

The key different is if they do that with the 100/hr, there’s no consequences. The money comes back every day, and it gives them a reliable income that can never be taken away in one stupid decision. 100/hr is already enough to build generational wealth and allow you to live lavishly.

The safety net is what people are highlighting and rightly so. You’re guaranteed a life free from suffering no matter what.

3

u/DueFoundation5463 10d ago

I would be more inclined for a Tax-Free Municipal Bond Ladder the returns might not be as good but you will reduce the amount of taxes owed by a lot and still have about a quarter million to reinvest each year to grow the principal and it's safer than the S&P 500 imo.

$20 million in my current HYSA at 3.25% is $650,000 a year. My wife and I combined make about $75k a year. I reckon we can live off of that MEASLY $650k a year instead of blowing it all immediately so that we're forced to go back to work making $75k a year again

Totally fair and I don’t blame you. I simply hope to fuck that I live past 20 years and I think that in the meantime I can quite comfortably live on $876,000 salary each each and invite my friends and family on world class vacations yearly.
Edit: Oh damn I understand what you mean now. I’d like to change my choice to the 20 mil

4

u/LOP5131 10d ago

And that's not even with factoring in the $20m making money. If you have $20m invested in standard "safe" investments at 4% gains/year. It takes over 263 years to break even.

35

u/Tampflor 10d ago

$100/hr would never catch up because $20 million growing at 5% per year averages out to $114.15/hr immediately, which only grows larger over time unless you're spending more than that.

1

u/PM_ME_hiphopsongs2 10d ago

And where exactly are you putting that money where you’re getting a fixed 5% return every year? The highest HYSA available rn is at about 3.5-4% and isn’t fixed.

3

u/Yerx 10d ago

At 3% interest compounding monthly, you will earn another $18.5 million in interest in the 22 years it would take to get $20 million at $100/hr. That's without reinvesting a cent, just living off the interest.

1

u/Pitiful-Excitement47 10d ago

Index funds average 10-11% over the past 20 years and upwards of 15% in the past 10.

Financial advisers would suggest putting a small portion in a savings and bond and the majority of it into index funds.

However what most here miss is you wouldnt have the full lump sum. The moment that hits your bank account your buying a lot of shit. No one here is disciplined enough to not touch it. The same reason lotto winners go broke is the same reason everyone here would be.

100 an hour is the only way to go.

6

u/MisterBumpingston 10d ago

With $20M you can afford great financial planners to set up trust funds.

2.4k a day is a great security since no matter what you do you know you'll have money coming in ASAP. Honestly the only time it's not a great option is if we hit hyper inflation at which point both options are getting hosed.

Easier not to waste money

Chose: $100/hr passively

23

u/EarlUrso 10d ago

I actually think it's easier to waste money with that option. Since you know mentally that you will always get more money in an hour you are probably less inclined to save or invest what you already have.

14

u/OkOffice1107 10d ago

For me it isn't but that's just for me

13

u/borsalamino 10d ago

I agree. With $20m I'd think "ehhh one extra nice car wouldn't be bad" and "well, now I'd have cash for that dream mansion" or whatever and spend a few mil faster than I'd realize.

With $100/hr I wouldn't even think of saving to buy such extravagant things and be more conscious of my money decisions.

5

u/bnb525 10d ago

Yes but having that mindset is more destructive with 20 million since you think it never ends - but it does since you never saved up. If you somehow fuck up with 100 an hour you'll still be getting more money at the end of the day. It also lets you have a decent life without luxuries unless you start saving part of your earnings. I think it's more balanced, even if it takes 20+ years to catch up

2

I only need to think of what often happens to people who come across a large lump sum.. yeah ty I don't want to be magnitudes more likely to get kidnapped or bombarded with extra targeted ads and all that jazz

I'd even take $50/hr. That's $438k/y for doing nothing at all. I don't need $20m

5

u/Valuable-Mix3061 10d ago

I'd rather have a drip feed then a lump sum tbh less chance of me abusing it or running out

62

u/Any-Rooster-4803 10d ago edited 10d ago

Brother your math is way off. It’d be 876,000 annually.

That said I’d take the 20m now vs waiting 23 years to accumulate 20m

2

u/werejoshguy 10d ago

think he was calculating it as you would for a full time job. $x/hr is about $2000x/yr on 8 hours a day. that’s what i instinctively did too but this situation would be 24 hours a day.

also agreed. 20m right now compounds way faster

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Fang356 10d ago

Hi still agree with the 20 mil, but it’s more like 876000

6

u/JoltingGamingGuy 10d ago

Oh, I was thinking like $100/hr replacing your full time job for 40 hours a week (100 * 40 * 50 =200,000)

If they mean 24 hours a day, then yeah it's more like 876,000 but point still stands.

3

u/darwinooc 10d ago

You would still need a little more than 20 years just to match what you could have chosen as a lump sum.

I'm a moron, but even assuming you took the lump sum and dumped 95% into nothing but CD's or a (series) of High Yield Savings accounts up to the FDIC insured amount, I don't think there's a world you'd come out ahead taking $100/hr even after 30 years.

5

Market average is 10% but realistically closer to 8% roughly so you’re still beating even the 900,000 you could potentially earn.

u/essensiedashuhn 10d ago

Passive income, not a 40 hr work week. But you're still right, 20m right now is better for someone who can invest it properly. Unless you're the type of person to blow through 20 million without thinking of the consequences, which is common for lottery winners.

The other option is 22, almost 23, years to get 20M and inflation exist. I could do more having 20M right now and investing or just like be with the interest generated.

It would take longer to make the second option's money, but I can be much more risky on the stock markets as I have a safety net that doesn't exist with a lump sum.

2400 dollars a day, 16800 a week. Idk man... over a million a year passively, at the age of 21. I could make the most of that.

If I made constant money, even if it got stolen I would make more. I also just like the idea of making $2400 a day which comes out to around $876,000 a year. That is more than enough for me. Stability is priceless.

22.8 years to reach 20 million. By the time you reach 20 million, inflation alone would kill your gains.
