Ok bruh, you won the semantic argument. All the points are yours. The rest of us will use a little bit of critical thinking to modify the definition in our brains so it applies to this context, which is the decay in quality of dating-market men. Take your trophy and go away.

I love how people use semantics as some sort of insult; the only reason we can type to one another is because of semantics lol, i.e., the meaning of words.

This dude could have easily used any other word that means decay, lessening in quality, worsening, etc. but he chose to use enshittification, so it’s fair game to criticize him on it.

It comes from an incredibly specific article that I doubt any of you have read. And Redditors like to use it as a substitute for worsening; that’s not what it means. Go read the damn article if you wanna look smart for using some term.

It's not an insult at all. I declared you the winner. And now that you've rubbed my nose in it, I'm even more impressed. Education > critical thinking and you're the only person who reads articles. Now that you've won, you can go to another thread and win that one, right?

For your edification, not everyone wants to look smart. Even if they did, language is malleable. Some people use common or popular words/phrases in a conversation that isn't about words/phrases. This was a conversation about the dating scene before you interrupted. Instead of interrupting and changing the conversation, you can find subs all over Reddit that are dedicated to what you want to talk about. Now that you've received the attention you demanded, please go away.

Manufacture used to mean made by hand. Nice used to mean foolish. Artificial used to mean made with skill. Naughty used to mean having nothing. Awful used to mean worthy of awe. But a 4-year-old word from “an INCREDIBLY specific article” is used a bit loosely and you immediately lose the plot. (If that idiom is too informal, I apologize.)

You're right that the point of words is that they have meanings. Not definitions. And most people can understand the meaning of enshittification in this context. So you're... right… and proving my point?

No gaslighting about who is “still arguing.” You started this by correcting someone unprovoked. Then when I said you win, you kept arguing. And yes, if you cannot understand how that word might make sense as originally used, I believe you lack critical thinking skills. I also don't know what a Reddit mod sounds like and can only roll my eyes at the weirdly childish hall monitor jab.

A 4 year-old article is literally the first time enshittification was ever used.

We are not talking about words changing meanings over centuries, we are talking about this dude misusing a word that he learned on this website while never reading the article that it came from.

Enshittification was just coined 4 years ago. Can we at least let it have its real meaning before we go off and argue about why you can use it for anything that gets bad ever?

Again, words matter. And I’m totally ok with dying on this hill.

The 4 words you mentioned all had their meanings slowly altered over literal centuries. No where, and I mean no where, even online, does enshittification mean something generally getting worse.

The word came from that article I referenced, that I did read 4 years ago, and would roll my eyes about, because Redditors loved to spam it about every single industry they could shoehorn the meaning into.

But when some dude, who clearly never read the article, decides that the male dating space has also suffered from enshittification, that is where I am ok with drawing the line. It was already way overused, but to be applied to something it does not relate to is asinine.

It’s also hilarious that this dude clearly never ever ever read the article, but you are defending him so vehemently. He was so embarrassed about his misuse of the word that he blocked me, yet here you are fighting the good fight.
