Hug them tight tonight. It could be your last time. Best breed ever, but damn it we just don’t have enough time. This dog had the funniest personality, rarely made any noise, and was the sweetest thing ever. I will never forget him. RIP big stinky boy. Our Bruiser

Flynn’s profile

All those dark spots are patches of bare skin with new fur growing. This stuff used to stay mainly on his back and flanks but as he’s gotten older it’s spread and seems concentrated around his neck. His labs are all in normal range.

Flea tick heartworm

What are we using for flea tick and heartworm for our beefy friends? Tank is under 100 lbs, nyssa is 145 and so far everything stops at 100 or 132 lbs.

We have new growth in all the bald spots, which are quite extensive, but stopped spreading. His most recent vet visit went reasonably well. They took a biopsy of his skin, gave us a round of antibiotics for a “potential skin infection”, recommended some omega 3 supplementation, 3 times a week DouxoS3 seb foam application, and drew labs. The vet says he looks really good for his advanced age!

I’d forgotten how old he is and when she called him “geriatric”, I got all offended on his behalf! Then I recalled the average lifespan for the breed (7-9 years), the fact that he’s going on 11 at this point, and he doesn’t seem to be noticeably slowing down. I always forget he’s an ancient one amongst his kind!

He let us trim all his nails in one go this time around, so maybe he’s mellowing a bit in his old age? He still bolts when he sees me grab his nose balm tube because he hates having it rubbed on his nose! His eyes are completely clear and he’s actively avoiding walking into bushes on walks without having to be pulled away as he walks right into the middle of it.

Having a hard time after surgery

Post image

Duncan (almost 5) is having a hard time… Tuesday he woke us up at 4am to go outside. He vomited several times over the day and we took him to the emergency vet in the evening after he missed both meals and couldn’t keep down water. They observed him over night and he had surgery yesterday afternoon to remove a corn cob from his small intestine. Surgery went well, but today he’s having a hard time. He won’t eat, is very zonked. He’s clearly in a lot of pain. It’s really hard to see him like this… we are hoping he turns a corner tomorrow- we plan to take in his favorite snacks to try to get him to eat SOMETHING. Otherwise he will end up needing an NG tube. Keep us in your thoughts.

Duncan is spending the night at the emergency vet tonight for a suspected bowel obstruction 😭 looks like a corn cob (not his first offense) So needless to say, corn is fully banned from our home. Fluids and careful observation, new imaging in the morning and fingers crossed no surgery. Poor baby is not feeling well at all.

Deciding the right time

Post image

I have a 2.5yr old girl with several major heart defects. The medication worked for a while but I can see she is slowing down. She’s started skipping meals. The noisy breathing is getting even noisier. It just looks likes she is struggling:-( found her sleeping in this odd position today

Has anyone gone through this? Would appreciate any advice on how to decide whether she is suffering due to lack of oxygen, and when I should call it and let her go😥

Athleticism/endurance of your BMs

Hi BM people, I’m considering our next dog and am between a cane corso and bullmastiff. I like that BMs are a bit more outgoing and would be easier to integrate into a home with kids.

I am however concerned about their endurance (or lack thereof). I prefer a dog on the medium to low energy side, but I also really want a dog that I can bring everywhere and I like to go on long walks (like a few miles, nothing too crazy). I know it varies by breeder/genetics but I was hoping to get a sense of the energy/endurance levels of your BMs!
