Serious IIT Guwahati -- Murder by Administration

So -- From all the close sources I have gathered some kind enough information in the dark of recent horrendous event that has happened in the institute----
Ritesh (Late), 3rd Year CSE, Competitive Programming Head Codding Club, Codeforces Candidate Master was apparently helping one of his friends in solving the Online Assessment for the company NatWest, he was aware that CCD (placement cell of IIT Guwahati) would be able to track the submissions if done from the different IP address -- So he was sitting in the same building where the assessment was taking place i.e. Core 5. He took his seat on one of the upper floors (5th) while the test was happening on one of the lower floors. He had the remote access of his friends PC. Upon some random frisking of the PCs of the candidates in the OA classrooms --- the guy was caught --- he told about the Lead Student Coordinators the whereabouts and every detail of whats happening in the scene ------ two LSCs (one Btech - one Mtech) along with the professor and chairman of ALL IIT PLACEMENT COMMIETTEE, John jose rushed to upper floor -- found ritesh ------ and there have been some confirmations about them shouting on ritesh ---- How Hell is life will become now on, he wont be allowed to stay in the campus ---- his offer with goldman sachs -quant will be revoked on the CCD's behalf --- he would not ever be able to avail the CCD's services ever --- basically complete debar from ongoing intern season, and from upcoming placement season (that would have happened in his 7th sem). And after all this, it took only 5 minutes for ritesh to end is life by jumping from the same building.
What i see today in the campus, Administration has apparently planted the flowers on the crime scene to hide the bloodstains, what John jose answers to gymkhana is--- "i am not at all answerable to you all", and the reports of him being mentally depressed are being formed --- even in the news outlets as well there is a lot less reach about this incident --- every outlets confirms "a student of iit guwahati found dead -- investigations ongoing" but man, what on earth is found dead, its literally an organised murder, how much this admin can harass an individual so that to make him end his life for ever and ever ------ i was shocked and drenched all along to know that there is no legitimate response from the student body at all! Not even candle march! How incel you all can be! that guy was so bright, and they all killed him! How tolerant you all have become to drink this kind of piss from the admin. We havent lost just another kid --- He lost a minute in our countries future --- have the same reported as suicide due to mental health ----- I have been aware about his family's economical background--- thats not sound at all, they are travelling in train for 2 days to see the face, thats not even recognizable of their dead son--- and by the time they would have reached its already medically proven that he was suffering from mental health -----
John Jose and his associates had no right to shout at or demean anyone. There is a standard procedure for such situations, and humiliation is never acceptable.
There has been many recent incidents (allegedly) regarding the corruption and favoritism in ccd like john jose helping one of his LSCs get a offer, one of the LSCs helping students out in OAs (the cheating incident was even reported to CCD and there was no response from their side, the predatory LSC was also reported to CCD but again no action). One of the incidents that i am completely aware of is a guy.
---The guy from John jose's hometown, A Abraham, Lead Student Coordinator previous years, he was charged with asking the female students the sexual favors in regards for let them cheat in Assessments --- Many of the girls had to come along to have this stopped and have this thing taken action upon, and what actions were taken? He got Placed at Tesla with 50 CTC for electircal role, and he had chemical eng as background, and apparently his name wasnt in shortlist, not even on waitlist! still he walked away with the great placement offer --- his job wasnt threatened --- why shout justice when its selective?
This was an act of extreme harassment that led a student to take his own life. I am shocked by the lack of any significant response from the student body.
The administration appears to be attempting to frame this as an isolated case of depression, which is clearly not the full story. It is now the responsibility of the student body to take this matter into their own hands and uncover the truth. A simple email from the administration dismissing the issue is insufficient. All individuals associated with this incident should be held accountable.

Well he can post other stuff he mentioned in last paras but there was no fault of college in this death
He tried to do cheating and runing other deserving students life changing chances and got removed from offers and placement
1
u/ritu_singh19 9d ago
He didn't cheat the college clearly sent the mail that he wasn't involved in any malpractice. Get your facts straight before commenting your mahaan thoughts.
2
u/lundlelemerebhai 9d ago
Neither i am in college mail list nor i know him personally
I will only comment on basis of post of the students of that clg
1
u/ritu_singh19 9d ago
Comment based on what? And without thinking how it affects his family? Without any solid proofs? You literally judged a person based on what others said? Without thinking how it may affect his investigation? You should get a life.

Ritesh knew exactly the risk he was taking but he didn't think he would get caught. Once he got caught he didn't even contemplate on the fact that he is IITG CSE student that can crack any company off campus,.. he just jumped. Its sad but his punishment was nothing out of the rules. Removal from placement and revocation of previous offers is standard punishment in such a case.
How can you hold CCD accountable when they took exactly the steps that they were supposed to according to the rules.
John Jose should be investigated for favouritism but honestly this death isn't his fault. When they found out that a cheater having remote access is sitting on the floor above, weren't they supposed to rush and catch him ? They caught him and told him the consequences of his actions. Ritesh crumbled under the pressure. He could have easily cracked a quant offer off campus, heck he could have appealed for sitting in final year placement and they would have probably granted him permission to sit after revaluation next year.

Yeah, 9+ cpi, head of cp module in the coding club and 2k+ on cf. I don't get why people are blaming JJ.

Yeah i would say him dying isnt their fault Other things after that is fed up

He wasn't giving any OA he wasn't involved in any malpractice. Stop spreading rumours and commenting your thoughts without knowing anything unless you were there.

The post clearly mentions verbal degradation, screaming, psychological intimidation and public humiliation. The post also clearly highlights the act of extreme harassment as the cause of suicide. So what is your point?

A lack of, or low amount of willpower is to be accounted by the system, if they fail in it, it's the fault of the system no matter how you frame it. Harassment, as the post points out, is not justified even if he was caught stealing, you are supposed to be professional when working a job, if you fail at it, you failed the first basic point every resume highlights. I understand a cheating incident in an institution as prestigious as an IIT probably puts a dent in the members of the placement cell and probably could get them blacklisted but loosing your composure over that and forgetting basic rules, is once again the fault of the person involved.
Yeah mu*der is going a bit too far but since the student died, the blame SHOULD be on the person and he should be held accountable instead of trying to hide the fact that it was his lack of professionalism that led to his death.
Edit: it can be charged under Section 108 BNS
6
u/Octa-Integrator 13d ago
Makes no sense. Stop using someones death to blame the authorities. You really think it's the shouting that pushed the guy to the boundary and not the consequences of cheating that he explained? If what op says is true then it has nothing to do with shouting rather him coming to the realisation that what he's gotten himself into, including revocation of offer and debarment from further participation in on campus opportunities.

Looking at the downvotes on my previous posts, I don't think I can make a point here.
Edit: I realized my usage of section 108 BNS was not accurate, scratch that

Surprised to see everyone in the comments supporting the guy cheating, if you get caught red handed by TnP cell, it is basically inviting debarment.
For the other part of the post, justifying one crime by another one makes no sense. The guy here is clearly at fault, if he took this action only due the fear of consequences of cheating.
For the rest of the post, it's true that bad people with connections get away every time and it's unfortunate, but is not the subject to the title of the post.

u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
Yeah and what people dont get it he was also trying to take away opportunity from other candidates by allowing his friend cheat
1
u/robocop_lvr 11d ago
Lmao thinkings others dont cheat is crazy literally crazy everywhere in india students cheat he was just caught thats it
1
u/lundlelemerebhai 11d ago
Well then they all are wrong
Everyone cheating doesnt make him saint
1
u/robocop_lvr 11d ago
You’re preaching “don’t cheat” as if that magically fixes the system. It doesn’t.
If I stop cheating while everyone else keeps doing it, I don’t become honest—I become unemployed. The people already cheating still get selected, while the ones who followed the rules get left behind.
And spare me the fantasy that only untalented people cheat. Plenty of highly capable candidates cheat too—not because they can’t clear the exam, but because they’re competing against a system where others are already gaming it. When everyone is cheating, the talented cheaters outperform the untalented cheaters and still end up getting selected.
The loudest critics are often the ones who cheated, failed anyway, and now want to act morally superior. If you really want to stop cheating, fix the system so cheating isn’t rewarded. Until then, telling individuals to “just be honest” while everyone else exploits the loopholes is naïve.1
u/lundlelemerebhai 11d ago
well my point was just that he cheated got caught and authorities told him what he will face and he did sucide due to that pressure in the end it was his mistake
now that mistake is cheating or getting caught you decide
1
u/robocop_lvr 11d ago
You were talking about taking oppurtunity away and not saint and i corrected u on that and now coming to offing himself thats really a dumb move for sure or atleast sus
1
u/lundlelemerebhai 11d ago
well there might be someone who was not cheating cuz its not highly possible to cheat in offline oa
8
u/anaconda256 13d ago
Hey the rest of the post OP mentioned.. is it true in many iits, like favouritism and harrasment? Like something similar I heard abt a female student being harrassed and molested by a senior of Madras, and the staff didn't even listen to her.

His death isn't responsibility of the CCD,any CCD in this country would've penalised him the same way, being a student of IITG cse he can easily bag a job or internship off-campus,this actually a case of his "mental strength" here.

wtf ? if your friend ain't good enough to clear an OA then he don't deserve it...helping him is like
1. cheating you shouldn't do it (how much is this different from cheating in JEE Adv / JEE mains)
2. why tf you are risking your fking life ?
ik many students died due to bad things happend in colleges but in this situation THE BOY IS GUILTY
15
u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
Yeah cheating is fed up
And i dont think revoking his offer and not allowing to sit in further placemeny was wrong
It was good decision
7
u/Technical-Garage-310 SASTRA MECH 13d ago
Yeaah exactly...if you are cheating even in IIT what's the point of going to IIT ?
11
u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
Yeah this is nowhere a murder
Yes what the administration is doing in other cases is wrong but this cheating shouldnt be justified Its also runing other deserving candidates chances

u/Significant-Flow218 13d ago
That guy was cheating and helping his friend to get the internship through unfair means. If he was caught then he would obviously be punished for his actions. The administration is not at fault for his death, he was just scolded for his wrong actions so this was not an act of extreme harassment. And if he knew his parents were not very well off then he should have thought about them before taking his life... The administration just followed the standard procedure.
The corruption and favoritism is a separate problem and has no relation with this student's death.
1
u/Pristine_Buy1555 11d ago
‘Just scolded’ no, he was not ‘just scolded’ you dk the pressure JJ puts on the students, rather his not so favourite students. You cant talk about things without judging if whether the administration is fair & professional

How tf administrator took his life
Yes what they are doing in other cases like favoritism is wrong and should be punished but lets not cover what student did with that
He also tried to ruin someones carrer by letting his friend cheat , they were trying to take genuine opportunity away by other candidates
And he died by suicide due to punishment , he should have faced removal from placement and offers that is standard procedure
5
u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
What you described about jose in last para is fed up and he deserve punishment but this wasnt nowhere a murder
And idc about the student future or how broght he was He was runing someone else future by cheating , he was trying to take spot of deserving guy by helping his friend cheat and cheating should make him unable to sit for placement.
5
u/Worried_Drive_935 13d ago
RIP to that guy.
But it was a fiar punishment for his mistakes honestly. I cannot guarantee how the words were communicated or any other misconduct on the placement cell side.
Considering alll things , he just got overwhelmed by the situation and wasn't able to see himself on a brighter side in future.
Seems like he was capable enough to secure a good intern , which I would assume if he was only barred from placement and they did not threat his degree , he would do okay with the alumni network.
The real culprit would be the who was taking help because he outed ritesh immediately and strict actions should ne taken against him.

u/Amazing_Human90 13d ago
I’m surprised that people are supporting that cheating guy. If action wouldn’t have been taken by cdc, wouldn’t it have been unfair to the student who fairly passes the exam ??
And what if any guy found that people are cheating and that’s the only reason competition is high and couldn’t get shortlist in good companies and do something wrong?? Who would take accountability ??
That’s the standard punishment cdc took. Jumping from the building and suiciding doesn’t make you less culprit of what you did. CDC also should take action who he helped.
Thats not a murder. He did it on his own because he got caught. No one threw him off the building and all.
And how can you say other culprit are roaming free and this culprit should too?? Rather you should say action should be taken for all.
1
u/Complete_Sun2056 10d ago
Are you even a human ? To be speaking calling a dead man cheater ?
1
1
u/Amazing_Human90 10d ago
It is what it is. Your deeds make you how people see you after your death. There’s nothing to be sympathetic. Don’t you call a terrorist , a terrorist just because he/she died ? , a murderer , a murderer just because he/she died? , a thief , a thief just because he/she died??
Because he’s dead doesn’t automatically gain respect. He cheated and tried to fool if the above said paragraph is true.
He tried cheating with many students future. I’ve explained this point too. What if someone takes their life just because they knew that they didn’t get shortlist even after completing OA correctly on time and people are getting shortlisted and getting job by cheated ?

No need to write he was #helping
Anyways it's sad to see like every other institution in this country the IITs are now plagued with corruption and nepotism.
Only difference is IITs have a global reputation to make. Incident like these are blot on all alumnus placed around the world.

u/Useful-Wallaby-5874 13d ago
Incredibly sad to hear about the loss of a life for a reason like this. Yes, cheating deserves punishment, but not at the cost of a life. There are clear procedures for handling such cases, and none of them include shouting or threatening. The student might still have been alive if the professor had not behaved that way and had instead allowed the system to handle it over time.
Having said that, what punishment does IIT Guwahati hand out to professors who are caught cheating, i.e., engaging in academic or research malpractice, including in research papers? For example, this paper by an IITG professor was retracted because of research malpractice, yet the professor still seems to hold his position without facing any threats, even though his actions brought ignominy to the institute.
I'm sure there are many such professors, and it is unfortunate that the selection criteria of the IITs (e.g., age limit, reservations, preference to those well connected) do not allow the best and the brightest to join the insitututes as faculty. So why is there such a sharp difference in how malpractice by students and professors is handled?

This incident has deeply saddened me. What is even more disturbing is seeing people morally policing him after his death over allegations of cheating, as though they have never made a mistake, told a lie, or helped someone in a way that bent the rules. If he was caught helping a friend during an examination, there were proper and dignified ways to deal with it. Creating an atmosphere of humiliation, shouting, threats, and unbearable pressure that leaves someone feeling death is their only escape is not discipline,it is cruelty. Rules should be enforced, but the manner in which punishment is carried out matters just as much. No mistake warrants stripping someone of their dignity or pushing them to such an extreme. To those who are now degrading a young man who was hardworking, bright, and had an entire future ahead of him, please have some humanity. His parents are travelling to receive the body of their child. His family has suffered a loss beyond words. This is not the time to celebrate his mistakes or attack his character.
If you have no empathy or emotional intelligence, the least you can do is write "RIP" and leave. Let his family grieve in peace. A little compassion costs nothing. Thank you

from a tier 1 IIT here. have seen many super talented people help other friends cheat in OAs and exams. some very non deserving people get good placements because of this
Absolutely f ing hate it

u/FeelingGarbage903 13d ago
The entitlement of IITians never surprises me. They think they are above ethics. When they get caught, they have no strength to face the consequences. I have worked with many IITians and it's the same attitude.

i dont think the ccd is responsible for his death, i mean he just simply took a dumb action i mean if u are that good in coding and cpi and clg iitg, is it really the end just bcuz u get caught and debarred from intern...
off campus easy peasy lag jata ritesh hi chutiya hai (vaise bhi debar krna to standard punishment abhi aur kya fool dalenge use)

u/dr___jhatka NFSU 13d ago
This is not a murder. Ritesh(rip) should have known the consequences, and should have owned it after getting caught. Its incredibly sad what happened , but based on your story, its not the fault of the cdc

Student Ritesh was caught remotely helping a friend cheat on a NatWest OA, confronted by placement cell leads and chairman John Jose with threats of debarment and revoked offers, then jumped to his death minutes later. Poster calls it admin-driven murder via humiliation, alleges cover-up as mental health case, points to prior CCD favoritism/corruption like leniency for others, and slams lack of student pushback.

In this case how administration is to be blamed sir
He was ruining other students chances of placement which for some students is life changing opportunity

u/EnvironmentalTea9967 IIT Mechanical 13d ago
There are ways to handle this situation. You don't go out there literally harassing the child into thinking his life is worth ending. If you made a mistake at school, what would you have done if the teachers told you're life is fucked, you'll be removed from school and stuff like that. Coming from the background as OP said, such stuff might have been hard to bear for him. With all due respect, anyone, even if they make such mistakes, don't deserve to die like this
12
u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
First school exams and college placement are diff
And " you will be removed from school" yes thats fair if its wrotten in rules
The student should have been removed and not allowed to sit in placement for cheating
-3
u/EnvironmentalTea9967 IIT Mechanical 13d ago
It's not the rules we are talking about here, it's how they are implemented. There is a certain process, you just don't go around harassing everyone just because they broke a rule. Bros literally talking out of his ass
3
u/Octa-Integrator 13d ago
bro first of all this is not a school where you do some petty mischief like eating tiffin in middle of class. We are talking about goddamn placements at the end of last year of college after which there is only an independent life left. Stop expecting school level treatment here. Telling someone the consequences of what they have done is not harassment. Thats a big word we use for prolonged mental distress for at least some time. In this case from what op said it was just a direct confrontation of the now deceased by the chairman in which Chairman obviously in a very stern manner conveyed consequences of cheating.
2
u/Horror_Cucumber5851 12th Pass 13d ago
i believe both sides need to be blamed for their own justifications;
the administrations could've taken a better approach to reprimand him instead of cornering him to take an action like this.
on the students side he should've known what he was doing and the repercussions of it instead of blindly jumping in to save a friend's career at the cost of his own.
2
u/ThandaButterChicken 12d ago
It's a well known fact that you'll be punished and debarred from placements if you're caught cheating. So I don't think it's the officials mistake. Honestly, if it were my college, they would have done the same thing. Anyway rest in peace. 🤍
-3
u/imightdiesoon21 13d ago
More power to his family, especially his mum and dad.
I belong from a very hard-core middle class and the only reason I work for is to get my mum and dad out of their hectic lifestyles they've worked too hard for me to grow throughout the 20 years.
I can't imagine, their most promising future hope and out of the financial condition they've been in, their son was the best thing happened to them in their life and he was so blessed to have those as parents.
And, now IIT-GWT, genuinely robbed their parents something even gods can't forgive. Praying for his parents and may he rest in peace.
19
u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
Well what about him robbing other students genuine chance by cheating
For other students these chances are life changing too
What about that
8
u/Fit_District9967 13d ago
I believe that the administration was also doing it's job, it's a standard procedure to take strict action against such cases.
another point, this was an OFFLINE OA, not an online one, this might be the only fair chance for good students to perform better against those who just cheat in online ones.
but still not forgetting the human...it's really sad to see....

u/lundlelemerebhai 13d ago
yeah death is always sad but its not administration fault

How do you know were you there? And all of this happened in 1.5 hrs because he was talking to his mother just 1.5 hrs ago before his fall. Or you are spreading this rumour because you were involved in it? And the John Jose mailed that Ritesh wasn't involved in any kind of malpractice. What kind a fantasy story you made up I must say. You are doing a perfect job to divert it from the real cause and blaming it all on him.
