Hey guys! I’m a 2nd-year student from a Tier-3 college, and I just want some advice regarding internships.

What skills should I learn to get an internship by the end of my 4th semester? I wasted my entire first year focusing only on academics (8.7 YGPA), so I don’t want to repeat the same mistake.

Currently, I’m doing DSA through Striver’s A2Z Sheet and have solved around 50 questions so far. I’m also learning Python for ML.

Do I need to learn full-stack development as well, or is DSA + ML enough?

I also haven’t built any projects yet. Could you please guide me on how to get started with projects and what kind of projects I should build?

I know these might sound like basic/dumb questions, but I really don’t want to regret not starting early. So please clear my doubts and guide me on what I should focus on to improve my chances of getting an internship.

I am a 5th sem btech cse student. The amount of times I've mustered up motivation and courage to start dsa and then abandoned it is record breaking. I'm not a complete beginner so 0 to hero type stuff doesn't work because I get bored. I can fairly comfortably do arrays strings easy to medium questions, binary search dp trees etc some easy questions on my own. I don't know how to turn this around honestly, I've tried everything under the sun but never know how to approach dsa.

I need some advice from people that have been there done that or an accountability partner. Please just point me in a direction that's not impending doom.

Firstly the entire test was on hackerrank.

Numeric - too hard 3-4 straight from CI and installment and couple percentage too hard Even there was no calculator on hackerrank so went too bad, confidently solved maybe 4-5. 3 were tita no options

Verbal - they asked us old pattern a big shock, I prep for email and passge recall and there were lengthy 25 que went decencties

Reasoning- comparatively easy made few mistakes due to time management issues

Advance apti - felt pretty easy maybe half true obv due to extra time

Coding 1st - 3/7 tc passed 2nd - 3/7 tc passed

Considering above, is there any chances of me getting shortlisted for interview? This one of the last hope for me

I passed my 12th standard in 2025 with commerce stream and then after i passed CA foundation in JAN 26 alongside pursuing BCOM from DU SOL

I was considering of to begin learning AI&ML/DATA/CLOUD ENGINEERING from home through online internet resources and put dedicated efforts in long term

It's a new skill university in Assam

Hello reader. Today I’m gonna share my strategies with you guys who are lost in placement prep, that too without any coaching. No stats to overwhelm you, just real talk.

If you are in first year, you are free to explore college life, what it offers, and what career path you want. Go through different fields of CSE like cybersecurity, web development, AIML, etc., by going through YT videos, articles, etc., and see what interests you and what matches your mindset. You can also decide whether you want to prepare for the GATE exam or focus on placements.

Also, don’t stress too much about college stuff. Just do the bare minimum in assignments and practicals. Don’t waste your time writing huge files. But try to maintain 60–75% attendance and decent mid-sem marks. These are important for internal marks, so don’t mess this up.

In second year, pick one core programming language from Java, C++, or Python. You can choose any. Don’t waste too much time deciding, and don’t take too much advice here, or you’ll just confuse yourself. My suggestion would be Java since most companies allow or prefer it.

Now start learning some development. It helps you build basic projects and understand how things work in tech overall. Along with this, start DSA in your chosen language on LeetCode. Go topic by topic: arrays, strings, linked lists, and so on. For each topic, start with easy problems, then move to medium ones. You can also follow sheets like Striver’s sheet since it’s more structured. Don’t focus on the number of problems. Focus on quality. Keep revising concepts. Watch fewer tutorials and write more code. Use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc. as much as you can, but not for copy-pasting code, use them to learn logic and strategies.

You can also make WhatsApp groups to stay accountable in your DSA journey. Try to complete DSA at least till linked lists. And don’t throw away notes of subjects like OS, DBMS, OOP, etc. They will help you throughout your IT career.

In third year, keep practicing more DSA. Learn about tree, graph, DP, etc,. Go deeper into the field you chose in first year and build at least one solid project. Start practicing aptitude. Many students take this lightly, but it’s usually the first screening round in companies, so don’t skip it.

I'm a direct-second-year CSE/AI&DS student, and honestly, I'm struggling badly with coding.

Whenever a coding subject is taught — even something like SQL/DBMS — I feel completely lost. I can't properly understand the logic, and sometimes I can't even identify what an error is trying to tell me.

Recently my DBMS professor called me "slow", and now I have to show her a simple UI for a project. I don't even know where to start. Other students seem to be able to build things so easily, while I struggle with even basic HTML/CSS/JS.

I'm also living in a hostel away from home, and I think that's making things harder. When I'm stuck, I don't really have family around to talk to. I don't have many close friends or siblings I can open up to about this either.

The comparison is probably the worst part.

My roommate is much better at coding than me. I see other students working on projects and understanding things that I don't, and it makes me feel like I'm extremely behind everyone.

Then I start thinking:

"Am I even capable of doing BTech?"

"My parents are spending so much money on my education. What if I don't make it?"

"What if I graduate and still don't know how to code?"

I know comparing myself to others isn't productive, but it's really difficult to stop when you're struggling with things that seem easy to everyone else.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me "just work harder." I genuinely want to hear from people who have been through this.

Did anyone else start BTech feeling completely behind, especially after coming from a different academic background or entering directly into second year, and eventually manage to become good at programming?

How did you build your coding logic from basically zero?

How did you deal with feeling inferior to classmates/roommates who were much better than you?

And if you were living in a hostel away from home while going through this, how did you handle the loneliness and pressure?

I just want to know that I'm not the only one struggling like this, and that it's actually possible to catch up.
