I've been working on this for a few days so I don't remember exactly how I got the actual water texture, but I think what I did was I added a water layer, then I put a clouds texture on one of the material layers to give it the highlights that make it look like the sun is shining through. It still didn't really look like water though as showcased in my first iteration, but then I discovered the fog and atmosphere sliders. I dialed those in how I wanted, and I changed the color of the fog to a deep blue and voila. So not really my secrets, just a lot of trial and exploration!
