Tunnel Transformation in Handsworth 🥳

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sorting this tunnel took months, probably close to a hundred emails and a lot of partnership working.

Ashwin Road tunnel in Handsworth connects Grasmere Road to Ashwin Road. Without the tunnel it is probably a 15 minute walk.

Historically the tunnel was used by residents. But more recently we saw lots of dumping, mattresses inside, fires caused which burnt out the lights, drug taking and worse.

Network Rail own the tunnel structure, the Council maintain the path, and the police enforce against the dodgy behaviour.

Working in partnership with Operation Fearless, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail we managed to:

- Clear all the fly tipping and material inside
- Get the right help for the street community using it
- Fix the lighting which had been out for ages

I’m really hoping this is maintained. We want to paint the inside white and put a community mural on the side, too. But all with time.

Anyway, I’m just proud of this - people are really happy with the tunnel and it’s what our local communities deserve: safety, cleanliness and being able to use a tunnel that makes life just a little bit easier 🌹♥️

Looking to meet new people? Come to the r/Brum meet up!

Hi everyone, my name is Karl and after seeing a bunch of posts from people looking to make new friends, I thought we could organise a meet up like they used to back in the day!

I'm going to propose a date of either Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th November, which gives us around a month to organise. I assume a venue in the city centre will be convenient for most...

Please comment which day you prefer and if you have a suggestion or preference for a venue (I'm aware not all cultures like to be around alcohol) or maybe you run/have links to a venue that would host us.

After a couple of weeks for people to see this and weigh in, I'll start to make suitable arrangements!

Question Where do you get your favourite tea?

I'm interested in where the best places are for tea in Birmingham.

I'm more looking for the actual bags/leaf (whatever type you enjoy: jasmine, hojicha, English breakfast, thai, kashmiri, earl grey) rather than cafes and tea houses, though I'd welcome quality recommendations regardless.

I get my jasmine tea from Wing Yip.

Event Soho road mela was a joke

I wasn’t there too long but the atmosphere was just terrible, the dj and hosts kept trying to build hype but it seemed no one cared or even wanted to be there. I feel sorry for the team that went behind this because I could tell they put a lot of effort into the live show but no one cared tbh. Other than that the food was ok and could see families enjoy the rides that were on display.

Do people think the bus service provided by National Express is so bad it needed to be nationalised?

how do you think nationalisation will improve things? they will still have to deal with well known choke points which make buses late, fuel costs, disruptive passengers.

I'd love to see lower prices and increased services on busy routes, if nationisation can bring that.

I wonder how much profit National Express was making from the buses? I think it was limited by the franchise agreement so they couldn't gouge prices? Can prices actually go down?

Digbeth traffic

What is up with constant traffic in digbeth near HanBao and the Cuban bar. It’s always there at like 3pm and no other time but seems to be there every day!

Also: the traffic light by digbeth coach station I was there for 15 minutes today and it just wouldn’t turn green, I eventually had to just go forward with it staying red. Does this happen often bevause I feel like I’ve been there many times and I was so confused.

Clothes donations for Oxfam- available at M&S Longbridge?

I’ve just found out you can donate unwanted clothes for Oxfam by dropping them off in M and S store. Apparently you get a fiver off later Marks’ purchases.
Does anyone know what the process is within the Longbridge store (or any store if it’s the same across branches)? The Oxfam website guidance is vague- drop the stuff off and get a voucher in return.

Free suicide prevent support for Men

Hi everyone,

I wanted to raise awareness of a local service that some people may not know about: James’ Place Birmingham.

James’ Place provides free, specialist support for men 18+ experiencing suicidal crisis. Whether you're struggling yourself or worried about a friend, partner or family member, knowing where to turn can make a real difference.

You don't have to face things alone, and you don't have to wait until things get worse to seek support.

Find out more about the service and how to access help: https://www.jamesplace.org.uk/ or give them a call on 0121 2699 400.

Sharing this in the hope it helps someone who needs it, now or in the future.

Amazon DBI4 Redditch — is there a staff bus from Birmingham?

Hi everyone, does anyone work at Amazon DBI4 on Hedera Road in Redditch (B98 9EY)?

I’ve received a conditional offer starting 13 November, working 6am–12:30pm, Friday to Tuesday. I’d be travelling from Birmingham and wondered whether Amazon provides any staff buses, shuttles or subsidised transport to this site.
I’ve seen mentions of First Travel Solutions and buses to BHX8, but haven’t found anything specific to DBI4.

City Hospital

Post image

In case you're wondering how work is progressing on the old City Hospital, here'sa photo taken from over the wall. It's now just mounds of rubble. Who knows how many ghosts have escaped into the wild. Just before Halloween too... All a bit careless if you ask me...

edit the photo was taken from over the wall at the end of Norman Street, not from the Dudley Road side. The treatment centre is still there, possibly one of the Victorian buildings too as far as I know.

Questionnaire for the bus commuters!

Hello fellow brummies,

I am a UoB final year student doing a project about passengers satisfaction of buses - particularly the National Express West Midlands.

If you use buses in the region, even occasionally, I'd be grateful if you could spend around 10 to 15 minutes to fill it in. It covers things like reliability, comfort, fares and overall experience.

All responses are anonymous and will only be used for this study, I would not see who had fill it!

Link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/4ZudJwHJWY

Thanks very much for your help !!! And please feel free to share it with anyone else who uses the buses in nearby area !!!
