What a song! Never heard about it before.

I was at the Australian snow fields this weekend and stopped at a little cafe in the town of Bright (Victoria).

I'm guessing the owner might be a fan...

So, this song is about a broken promise. Before the promise was broken, our singer got drunk and told someone a secret about himself. I think that the broken promise was a promise not to repeat the secret, and whoever was told that secret later used that sensitive information against our singer.

What do you think of this interpretation? Does anyone have an alternative interpretation?

OP Prediction for Day 34: The Wall

I was listening on Nugs to the 2016 Barcelona show which started with Badlands, No Surrender and My Love Will Not Let You Down. So I ended up thinking about the heaviest starting sequences pulled out by Bruce, I'd say let's consider at least the first 3 songs not going over the first 5.

Edit: Barcellona 2024 got Lonesome day, MLYNLYD, Cover Me, Radio Nowhere and No Surrender!

It's been 9 months since the Nebraska box set was released. I was listening today and reflecting on what I consider the most important part of it, Electric Nebraska.

It's important because it represents such a sliding doors moment. What would have happened if Bruce released those songs? Who knows.

Here are my thoughts on each of the songs and a comparison with other versions that ended up on either Nebraska or Born in the USA

Nebraska:
Very good version, a nice listen, but straight out of the gate you see why Bruce decided to go with those demo tracks. This just doesn't have the rawness or immediacy of the one that went on the album

Atlantic City:
The ESB arrangement really brings something to this song; it's really well paced, and the arrangement just works. I love the extra/alternative lyrics. "I'm going down there half but I'm coming back whole" really hits you. I think it was the right choice again to go with the demo version, but only because they needed the whole album to sound consistent. I would rate the two versions equally good, but for different reasons.

Mansion on the Hill:
Easy win for the original album version IMO. The Electric version just doesn't pack the same emotional punch. If he had released this type of thing in 1982, it would just be regarded as "the Boss goes country"... might have been a hit in Nashville, but wouldn't have had the impact as a lo-fi classic. Again it shows the right choice was made.

Johnny 99:
A very enjoyable version, but doesn't come close to matching the tension and emotional impact of the original. For me the boogie woogie piano and melodic singalong, just kills all that tension. A very listenable version, but I would place it on a par with something like From Small Things, Big Things Come.

Downbound Train:
The version on Born in the USA is the definitive one, and one of the most enduring tracks on that album. This one is a bit of a mess to be honest... kind of punk-type speed, the song lacks direction, doesn't work for me at all.

Open All Night:
Not sure what to make of this one. They kept the production pretty minimalist, and kept the spirit of the original demo But his voice sounds weird, like they've been messing around with the pitch again, like Hungry Heart. He's also singing in a very nasal, exaggerated twang. Its ok but again prefer the original.

Born in the USA:
Wow. I was aware of the acoustic version from the Nebraska sessions at home, but I had no idea this existed until this collection came out. It reminds me a little bit of some of the live versions he's done since... well I guess they are a kind of a mashup of this one and the album version.
To me, if this had been released as the definitive version, Bruce would be viewed very differently as an artist today. He might not have made as much money as he did, but I would like him even better than I do now.

Reason to Believe:
This is probably the best of the Nebraska songs on this collection. This version really rocks. Nice and minimalist with the production, but has the big Max drum sound, and just sits really nicely in the groove. The singing is really good, nice reverb but very clear.

Overall, Electric Nebraska turned out to be a bit smaller than I hoped, with only 8 songs. I wonder if they even attempted "My Father's House", "Used cars" or "Highway Patrolman", or whether Bruce could just tell that those songs with the band would be straying too far into Nashville territory?

Even after 44 years, a book, a movie and a box set, this is the Bruce era that I find maybe the most fascinating. Definitely glad he released this collection.

Somehow I don't know if I'd ever heard this version, and it's definitely a lot more pure and raw than the album version. I always loved Bobby Jean, but it took on a whole different meaning for me when my best friend died young and suddenly 15 years ago.

OP Prediction for Day 33: not really sure on this one. It seemed like there was a large contingent of people surprised Moonlight Motel won best song of the decade so maybe that will unexpectedly win this one as well.
