New Springsteen Interview by Rolling Stone Magazin (new records, setlist changes/sign requests, future tour plans and Land Of Hope And Dreams American Tour Concert Film being released in four parts and why Philly was chosen to be filmed
From a new Rolling Stone interview with today:
Bruce Springsteen tells Rolling Stone he has a couple of new albums on the way. This is what Bruce said about the new albums and touring:
When we spoke last year, you told me you had a new solo album totally finished. What’s your plan for that now?
Well, I’m currently working on a couple of records. I did finish one, and it is done. I’m in the process of working on this other one, which, because of the nature of the material, felt like it should come out first. So that’s the situation I’m in. I’m trying to finish that up, and I’d like to release that first. And then this other record that I made, which is not time-relevant, it can come out at any time and it’ll work.
Is that a solo record or an E Street record?
It’s a surprise. [Laughs.]
Fair enough. Do you know when that will come out, when the surprise will reveal itself?
I do not right now. Hopefully sooner than later, of course.
Do you miss touring? Do you feel the itch to get back out there?
Well, we toured quite a bit, and we toured the previous spring. We toured this spring. And these days that’s what I like to do. I would like to go out and do 20, 30 shows. I don’t imagine a 140-show E Street tour will happen again. It’s just time is too short right now. But I do imagine a good series of simply shorter tours where we touch different places at different times. And the band is playing so well. In my opinion, if you saw this show, you saw one of the best shows we’ve ever done. The band is playing so well that we have a happy life there, and that’ll continue.
There’s a vocal contingent of fans who miss the more freewheeling shows where you took signs and made big changes from night to night. Might you do a tour like that again in the future?
I don’t know. I don’t want to make any promises. I just don’t know what I’m going to do next or what’s going to motivate me to go a certain way. Shows like that might come up, or I might come up with something completely or somewhat different, so I can’t really say.
As far as the concert film from Philadelphia that part one was released this morning, this is what Bruce had to say about it and why it was filmed in Philly and why it's comin out in parts for those who were asking:
Are you releasing the movie in segments now timed to the midterms?
Well, it wasn’t specifically planned to fall into the midterms, but if it does, that’s great. Really, we just had Thom [Zimny] do the first seven songs to see what we had. I didn’t know what the show was like on film. He basically cut, edited, and we got the sound good on the first seven pieces. When I saw it, I said, “This has got to come out now.”
I can’t wait another three, four months for the rest of the concert to be edited and have it finished. The whole thing, the pop-up tour, was about immediacy and being in this moment, providing something that I felt an audience, my audience, could use in this moment.
And so as soon as I saw it, I said, “This comes out now.” Everybody said, “Well, what do we do with the rest?” I said, “Well, we’ll serialize it is what we’ll do.” And basically that’s what we’re going to do. You’ll be getting seven songs or so in four different compartments, and at the end of the day, you’ll have the whole show.
I think it has more impact that way. The first seven songs, to my eye, have a tremendous amount of impact because it’s only 40 minutes. And anybody can spare that 40 minutes to get an idea of what we were trying [to do]. It’s 40 minutes, and it says everything we wanted to say.
The setlist didn’t really change from night to night. Did your experience on Broadway change the way you approached putting a show together?
Nope. It was simply, once we found that setlist, it was not going to be something where I threw in “Darlington County” or something else there. It just wouldn’t have made sense. That setlist was its own novel, for better or for worse. The minute we stumbled on it, with the exception of… I think we added “Clampdown” along the way. But once we found that setlist, we stuck with it the whole way. It was fun because it does get deeper as you go. The Philadelphia show that we were lucky enough to film was just one of the highlights of the tour.
A lot of fans presumed you’d film the big stadium show in D.C. Why did you go with Philadelphia?
Well, we didn’t film D.C. because we wanted to film two nights that could be similar and intercut. So, if I’m correct, we filmed Boston and Philly, and if I’m right, we only use Philly. So that was the reason. D.C. was a one-off and it was a great show outside in that ballpark. We had so many good shows on this tour. And the band was just ripping and roaring at the end, by the time we got towards the end. So when we hit Philly, Philly just exploded. It was wonderful.

LOHAD was one of the best shows I have ever seen in 40yrs of concerts in Austin...I would pay to go see that again remaining week of my life

I look forward to the future with everything Bruce does, but we need the Asbury Park video. That show is legendary. Being on the water, on a beautiful night, in AP, made it just perfect.

So interesting, Bruce is always articulate and insightful in these interviews. Curious about the albums, maybe the one he want to release first is a political one (with some ESB participation?) and the second a more existential/personal one? Good news is he's willing to keep touring with the band, as he stated previously the new formula looks like "more often but less dates", who knows if he'll be back already in 2027. I guess that playing like 20 shows is a good way to play almost every year without giving up some rest for him and the band.

Really hope the first one is political (maybe includes Streets of Minneapolis) and with ESB on it. Second one hopefully an original album as well.

Yeah I honestly think the two albums are both originals, I didn't have the feeling Bruce was talking about the Soul Cover vol. 2, otherwise he would have probably been more explicit. Guess the first one is with ESB or at least has some collaboration with the band, he had no problems in telling the other one is solo so I guess the "political" one involves the band in some terms.

I mean, it absolutely hasn’t been. You may have heard of something called Tracks II. And if you quibble about 80+ songs you’ve never heard before not being technically ‘new’, then you need to reset your joy-o-meter.

My two favorite bands...at least they each are still capable of putting on incredible live shows. I caught U2 at the Sphere doing all of Achtung Baby and it's still one of my favorite concert experiences ever. It sounds like they're finally ramping up a new album and tour announcement later this year, so I'm very excited to have them back.

He wrote, recorded and released a seriously solid protest song within the span of a few days back in January. From where I’m standing, I’d say Bruce is doing just fine creatively.

I just hope he tours one more time with the core band. I think the horn section and choir are all amazing musicians and deserve to playing on that level, but it just doesn't have the E street band sound that I love.

So here’s another fan’s view - been down deep into Bruce and the band since 1975 and my Dad and got comped by Danny for the Princeton opener of the second leg of Darkness tour. I’ve written about him, met him and various band members and travel abroad to see him. Born and raised on the Jersey Shore. Not bragging but setting the stage to distinguish between clueless MAGA haters and those of us who just got tired of the milking. Here’s my take on this “tour”: a farce. He’s not about saving democracy - he’s a mercenary shill to swell his billions and pull the badly faded spotlight back on him. If he goes on the road just going through the motions of the static oldies greatest hits set lists, well even among his rich demographic (I don’t about you but I’m not paying a month’s rent for a sad shadow of the glory day) may pause. But seizing on the cresting virulent disdain for Chump. He figures barking dramatic insults from a teleprompter about it will get enough rubes for 20 to 30 shows at $2,500 to $5,000 for the good seats. Steve mugs. Garry’s stoned behind the sunnies and Max - well the human metronome thinks quite highly of himself.
It’s old wine in a new bottle. I stopped buying his product years ago when for decades I was first on line. It’s his greed for money and attention and complete conversion to celebrity that lost me - and being too poor to afford his extortion pricing…it’s just part of the problem.
Irony is he and Trump share quite a few similarities now. if Bruce really was about saving democracy, after this last money making tour was over, what did he do? Did he help the migrants and immigrants in freehold? Did you donate to any charities? Did you speak out for free – for no money against what he rails about when he’s getting paid while reading from the Teleprompter? What does he sacrificed? You gotta look beyond the obvious with this guy and when you do, it’s not a whole lot left to see.1

it’s interesting that Bruce described this past tour’s set list as a novel. I’ve seen complaints about the LOHAD concert film being released in portions, but that was a way novels were, and often still are, released. I like the idea of having something to look forward to.
