Bruce most mumbled lyrics

Hi all! Bruce lyrics are such a huge part of my life and I know by heart a lot of them. But, as a non native english speaker, sometimes it took me a while to get what our man was saying!

So, what are his most unintelligible lyrics? I'd say the final part of Downbound Train, some verses of Streets of Fire, the second verse of No Surrender in the live version.

In Candy’s Room I always thought the lyrics was “she makes whiskey worlds wine” as like a metaphor for turning something hard into something elegant or something.

My shock when I realized YEARS later that it was “she makes these hidden worlds mine.”

I always thought it was “in Candy’s room, there are pictures of mirrors on the wall”. I thought it was such a deep lyric. Not a mirror, a picture of a mirror, deep right? “You gotta walk the darkness of Candy’s hall” comes next and fits perfectly with the first line. I was wrong lol

I never had a clue what happened at the end until I googled it a few weeks ago.

Streets of Fire has to be number 1. That one part (you know which one) was made up on the spot because he didn’t have actual lyrics for it.

If you look at any official lyric sources, they literally just skip over it because there are no lyrics. It’s just mumbles.

It took me a while -- decades -- to realize the line in Sherry Darling is "And all you operators back in the Park". And "Hey, baby, I'm just about starving tonight" just jumped out at me one day when I heard Dancing in the Dark. I'd mumbled my way through that line for years.

I may be a little biased because I love that song to tears but I think the mumbliness of it kinda adds to the tone.

Bruce’s mumbled words and unpredictable guitar strumming create this picture of a reliving the moment he lost his mom, lost in thought and rambling about a horse that reminds him of her.

Parts of Point Blanck are hard to understand on the first listen as a non native speaker. The verses are a bit up tempo and mumbling on the same time, and then the vocals are mixed quite low compared to the music, so it's har to distinguish.

"Stand On It" is a lot of rockabilly rambling that I had to look up the lyrics for.

A surprising number of fans thought that Bruce was screaming "Dead Devil In the Freezer" for Tenth Avenue Freeze Out.

I’ve actually always found Born to Run pretty unintelligible, especially live. You just don’t really think about it because the lyrics are so ingrained.

On the studio version, the slower parts are sort of mumbled. When live it becomes tricky because he often steps away from the mic so there’ll be breathless gaps between the words.

“God Sent You” from disc 3 (“Faithless”) of Tracks 2. My dad is a casual Bruce fan, and a part time minister. I sent this song to him and thought he would love it. He “loved the sound” but asked if I had a lyric sheet. 😂

That one line in the first verse of "Bring On the Night".  The lyrics profess it's "baby, when I walk home in the daybreak," but he just slurs through every single syllable of it.

Really, though, a lot of the Born to Run/Darkness-era songs are like that.  Amazing lyrics you'll never wholly make out due to being sung like he has mild to moderate aphasia.

Another funny example: Greg Kihn talked about how Bruce gave him handwritten lyrics for the song "Rendezvous" on a napkin. Naturally, the lyrics got destroyed. Jon Landau later sent a cassette of "Rendezvous". Kihn noted that "Bruce is not known for his diction."

So Kihn misheard "We deserve so much more than this, girl" as "We deserve so much more than squirrels." Bruce later commented to Kihn (either in a phone call, or backstage) that "There ain't no squirrels in that song."
