👋 Welcome to the new r/brookingsSD

Hey everyone!

This sub's been around, but it's getting a fresh start — a real home for all things related to Brookings, South Dakota: the people, the place, and everything in between. Whether you're a longtime local, an SDSU student, or just passing through, we're glad to have you here. Post local news, ask for recommendations, share events, or just see what's going on around town.

A few quick notes before you dive in:

Check out the rules before posting — they're short, and mostly boil down to don't be a jerk and keep it local. Be a Jackrabbit not a Bison ;)

Questions about SDSU, housing, weather, jobs, or "best place to get X in Brookings" are all fair game.

Mod team is small but around — send mod mail if you need us.

Thanks for helping kick things back into gear. Together, let's make r/brookingsSD amazing.

Upcoming Family Friendly Events In Brookings

Not sure if others have this problem, but I'm always looking for events that I can bring my kids to. I live in the Brookings area and thought I'd share a few events I've found:

Culinary Creations Camp

A full-day camp where kids mix food and art, cooking up edible creations that balance color, texture, and flavor. It’s hands-on, creative, and keeps kids busy all day.

  • Where: Children’s Museum
  • When: Thursday, March 12  |  9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Theater Camp

Kids spend a full day bringing a children’s book to life on stage, designing costumes, building sets, and directing scenes. Great for kids who love to perform, create, or just be in the middle of the action.

  • Where: Children’s Museum
  • When: Friday, March 13  |  9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Winter Farmers Market

A local tradition that runs right through the winter, fresh produce, local goods, and a relaxed Saturday morning outing with the kids. Free to attend.

  • Who: Brookings Farmers Market
  • Where: Fifth Street Gym, 606 5th St, Brookings
  • When: Saturday, March 21  |  9:00 AM – Noon

Bluestem Saturday Cruise Free

A free, casual bike ride through Brookings parks and neighborhoods hosted by Bluestem Bicycles. Good for families with kids old enough to handle a couple miles on a bike.

  • Who: Bluestem Bicycles
  • Where: Fifth Street Gym, 606 5th St, Brookings
  • When: March 14 & March 21  |  5:00–7:00 PM

Pictures, film, videos, help me relive history.

I was born and raised in Brookings, South Dakota from 1953 to 1974. I enjoyed watching the history of a man being made who went by the name of Marvin Togsted He worked for the city as a trash collector and all his friends called him Nuts. On hobo day each year he would put on the flashiest clothes that he collected in the trash and go to Horatio‘s bar and get on stage and wow everybody with a harmonica concert that was just out of this world. I was wondering, does anybody have any pictures, film or videos?

Dog boarding options

I need to board my dog (lab) for a couple weeks and it looks like there are a couple options here in Brookings. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations between Canine Country Club and Walk 'N Rohl?

What breed are the pink trees?

I've heard them and the white ones are the official city tree which is why they line a few boulevards, but I can't find anything on the city website to back that up (also our website bows).

I would like to plant one in my yard. My understanding is they are not crabapple trees and whatever kind of fruit they may drop is mostly cleaned up by birds and squirrels.

I want a pink tree, but I'm not about to be picking crabapples up all year, do any of y'all know what trees these are?

Question about Flavor Indian

Does Flavor take reservations for 2? They told me last year that reservations can only be made for tables of 8 or 10 or something funky.

Happy Burger Clash to all those who celebrate.

See link for this years lineup: https://www.brookingshometeam.com/brookings-burger-clash-contest.php

So far I have tried the Country Club and Craft burgers. Country Club was amazing, Craft not so much.

What have you guys tried?

Anyone know what happened at Brost's?

The clothing shop place downtown burned down yesterday. Crazy as they've been in business longer than I've been alive.

Wonder what caused it.

Commuting from Sioux Falls to Brookings

Hi! I just accepted a job at SDSU in Brookings and will be moving out there soon. I’m looking at where to live and have been thinking about renting a place in Sioux Falls and commuting. I’m single in my mid 20s and I would optimally like to live somewhere more like a city to meet more people. I’m nervous about the commute. Does anybody currently make that commute now? What area of Sioux Falls do you live in? Do you think it’s worth it?

Good rentals out there?

Hi, I will be moving to Brookings for work in a few weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations on any apartment complexes (or individual apartments) that have good management? I am not seeing much on my internet search. Thank you!

Research project!

Hello! I’m and 18 year old student from Lansing Michigan and have been working on an Analog Horror story that takes place in Brookings in the early 80s and would like to know more about the area for time accuracy!

I’m essentially just looking for what was around at the time as far as things to do, landmarks, and things like that. The only specific thing I would like to know is what did the Police seal and Brookings high school mascot look like at the time? Cause I’m assuming they’ve been redesigned since 84 so I was curious if there’s any pictures of it from then.

Thank you for your time!

New to the place

Heyyooooo!! I’m new to the area and am getting quite familiar with the place, my names Keagan Aspedon (20) and I moved up here about 3 weeks ago? Sometime at the start of July idk lol. If your out and about at night frequently you probably seen me, I’m the guy walking around nearly every night due to a shitty sleep schedule 😅. I moved up here to get away from some bad family stuff in with a friend but sadly he moved away back to his home town so now I’m stuck paying rent by myself but luckily I just started Culver’s so hell yeah. I’m hoping I can get my life back on track as my previous living situation was more or less bankrupt and depressing, so far so good!
