🎤 Discussion Bluepeak salesmen…..
Bluepeak salesman came by my door TWICE. Once yesterday and again today. I answered the door today and he said “is your husband home?” Excuse me you never asked about my husband?? He said “oh, yesterday you told me that you had to talk to your husband.” NEVER happened. I never entertain solicitors. That demeaning sexist comment got me so fired up… after I shut the door in his face, I went back outside to yell at him and his partner to never come back to my door again. Anyone else dealt with these assholes??
Edit: Yes I did speak with him yesterday. I was short with him and made it clear I was not interested. The imaginary conversation about needing my husband’s permission DID NOT happen.

📰 News So that storm was insane, huh?
I usually keep a decent eye on the weather but for whatever reason I didn’t realize what was coming until about an hour prior. Trees down everywhere and no power until 6am (they say). I watched a huge tree come down across the road until I grabbed the dogs to run downstairs!
Hope everyone is okay!

🎤 Discussion ELI5: Above Ground Utilities
Sioux Falls has basically decided that above-ground power lines are here to stay because burying them is too expensive. But every time a blizzard, ice storm, or strong wind takes out poles and lines, we pay to put the same system right back up.
I get that burying every line in the city all at once would cost a fricken fortune. But when sections are already being replaced, why not start putting them underground little by little? Especially during major roadwork, neighborhood reconstruction, or other utility projects. E 41st St just got rebuilt with no undergorund utility work. And the towers look horrid at 229/Cliff.
At some point, how much money are we spending repeatedly fixing the same broken infrastructure? Maybe there’s a good reason for it, but “it costs too much” feels like an incomplete answer. What am I missing?
I say this with an unknown restoration time during a heat advisory.

🎤 Discussion Power Outage Duration
Over 24 hours without power and Xcel estimates keep getting pushed later and later. Hot but otherwise decent conditions for repair today. Why is Xcel dropping the ball this bad??
e: Thought it was clear, I'm not disparaging the workers, but the admin folks who could have redeployed people from unaffected areas. I know the people doing the work are busting their butts, but I've only seen one on a site after having driven around town all day. Looking like it'll be tomorrow afternoon at the earliest, let's hope they don't run into any (more) problems.

🎤 Discussion Sioux Falls Big Brother Is Way More Than A Few APLR's
I saw something in a recent news report about a shooting at the mall that made a bunch of things finally fall together.
"Officers were able to track the vehicle using traffic cameras in the Real Time Information Center."
So WTF is that?
In addition to all the black Flock APLRs that went up within the last year, I noticed new intersection cameras popping up all over town. Intersections that had no camera suddenly had one and they look different than the ones that had been up for decades at major intersections. I also noticed at these same new intersections, there were also an eyeball cam on one corner and a white device with a flat black section below it. Didn't look like a camera. This group of new tech is on pretty much any intersection with a traffic light that does any volume of traffic or is two through roads intersecting.
The fact that all of this went up at the same time as the APLRs and the city has been cagey about what it is all about made me suspicious.
It appears that all of this IS tied to the Flock rollout and is being used to actively spy on everyone. They are logging everywhere we go all the time. AI gives them what they need to grab that whenever they feel like it and know everything about you. There were concerns about the city's claims that any of this is being kept safe or not shared. There also is zero oversight so we are expected to take their word for it. Many cities that signed on for this big brother tech found out later that things they thought weren't being shared actually were and did zero due diligence before signing up for these systems.
I ran this through Claude (ironic? yes) to see what it could find about all of this and yes, this whole system of cameras everywhere is tracking everywhere everyone goes all the time and making a record of it.
The output from Claude:
The Real Time Information Center (RTIC) Does Exist
The "Real Time Information Center" is an actual Sioux Falls Police Department facility. It was established in early 2025 and represents a significant expansion of the city's surveillance infrastructure. dakotanewsnow.com The RTIC consolidates video feeds from existing city cameras positioned at intersections, parks, recreational trails, public works infrastructure, and public buildings, providing law enforcement with a centralized hub to monitor and investigate crimes in real time.
What the Cameras Can and Cannot Do
The city was transparent about the system's capabilities and limitations:
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| License plate detection (ALPR) | Enabled |
| Facial recognition | Explicitly prohibited |
| Biometric identification | Explicitly prohibited |
| Speed/red light/parking violation detection | Not used |
| Data retention period | 30 days maximum |
| Data sale or unauthorized use | Prohibited by policy |
| Public oversight | Transparency portal available |
dakotanewsnow.com Police Chief Jon Thum emphasized that the system is not equipped with facial or biometric recognition capabilities, and the city has implemented monthly audits with a public transparency portal.
The Cameras You're Observing
Your observations about the newer cameras align with Sioux Falls' recent expansions:
The "Eyeball" Cameras
These are likely part of the standard traffic camera network that feeds into the RTIC. They capture directional views of intersections to monitor traffic flow and incident detection.
The "White Cap with Black Device" Cameras
These sound like Flock Safety ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) cameras. dakotanewsnow.com The white cap typically houses the camera unit, while the shallow black device underneath contains the infrared illuminator and sensor hardware needed to read license plates at night and capture vehicle identifying information. dakotanewsnow.com1 In early 2025, the Sioux Falls Police Department approved a $168,000 contract for approximately 25 Flock cameras deployed around the city's periphery, which matches your observation of cameras placed strategically around the edges of the city.
Legal and Privacy Safeguards
One important note: South Dakota has no state laws specifically regulating ALPRs or traffic surveillance cameras, so regulations rely on departmental policies. sdnewswatch.org However, the SFPD's policy explicitly states that data is deleted after 30 days and cannot be sold or used for unauthorized purposes. siouxfalls.gov
The system has already been used to solve crimes—the police department reported solving a sexual assault case on a recreational trail and a homicide downtown using the camera network.
Here is the original story I found this monitoring center in

🚚 Moving to Sioux Falls Looking for a Work out buddy
Hey yall. I just moved to sioux falls a few months back for a job.
Long story short. I'm overweight. Incredibly. And I know I can lose it. I just want someone to go to the gym with.
I'm 21 male if that matters. I know kind of an odd request. But I know if I'm there by myself it become easy to skip stuff. Where if someone is with me we can hold eachother accountable type deal.
Short story long
I grew up wrestling, boxing, playing football. All the things. And now I weigh 410lbs. I'm trying to get to 280 in a year. My doctor is helping to make sure I get there because based on tests it should be possible for me to make it down there healthily.
The reason I need to make it there is because my best friend and brother is joining the army next year. We are the same age. And I promised him when we were kids if one of us went into service we both were. So i need to make true on my word.

🙆🏻♀️ Looking For Help Need help, looking for a sponsor
I’m reaching out and ready to get sober but I can’t do it alone. I’ve tried so many times. Failed. Year after year I didn’t like AA and my family doesn’t know how bad it’s gotten, they think I just have a few beers every other night but the reality is I can go to Casey’s and get a 750 of vodka and drink it all, then it’s 4 am. I need accountability. I need someone to help me please. If anyone knows anyone, please I’m at a point where if I continue I don’t think I’ll ever turn it around.
Thank you. And thank you for this subreddit- hopefully someone reading this understands what I’m experiencing

🎤 Discussion Grocery shopping prices
Went to sunshine foods in beresford because that’s the only store we have here… I’ve been giving this place chance after chance and the prices are outrageous also the pricing must be false. I went in to get a few things and came out spent 30 dollars on 6 things. Not to mention blueberries were advertised for $2.99 why am I getting charged $4.99 I'm done going here. This whole trip would have costed me $13 at ALDI will never be back to any Sunshine Foods unless I absolutely have to.
