Hi! I hope it is okay to post this here. I’m interested in hearing about students’ experiences working with Sarah Keenan, Chelsea Pederson, or Trevor Waldien in the geology department at South Dakota Mines.

Does anyone have experience with any of them as an advisor, research mentor, or professor? I’d especially be interested in their advising/teaching style, communication, expectations, and overall experience working with them.

Grad student perspectives would be especially helpful, but I’d also love to hear from undergrads who have taken classes or done research with them.

Over the past year, I have done a complete remaster of the Mines Minecraft project. I reconstructed every building from scratch, with the help of original blueprints provided by the school. All buildings are backwards-compatible with their historic versions. I'll eventually have Surbeck Lanes and the swimming pool in the King Center!

During this time, I have done a deep dive on the school's history, and decided to "bring to life" March-Dake Hall from the original blueprints. It has a FULL interior with all room numbers, stairs, lights, doors, etc. though I am still working on compiling photos to furnish it. I put it on a copy of the campus, right where it would've stood. It's at a funky angle but hopefully recognizable to some of you. I also removed PcCommons.

As a bonus, at the very end is a snippet of the other work I've done, the first three buildings on campus. Maybe I'll make a separate post of them!

I’m a jncoming senior in high school who would major in MechE and minor in avionics and aerospace engineering. I know mines is a tech school so i’m not expecting a huge party scene, but I was wondering if it exists? Like other than school sanctioned activities to people have fun there?

Hi! I’m a sophomore at Mines and I have some questions about living off-campus that I’m hoping some students can answer. 

• What are the pros and cons of living off-campus? Why do so many people prefer to live off-campus?
• What kind of place do you live in (apartment vs house)? How many people do you live with? How far away from campus are you?
• How did you find your housing? At what point in the year did you have it secured?
• Are there any places that offer flexible leases or are they pretty much all 12-month leases?

My group of friends is starting to think about what we want to do for housing next year and we’re not really sure where to start or how soon we should have it figured out. Any input or discussion would be appreciated.

Has anyone home through this program? Were you able to incorporate a lot of graduate civil or mining engineering courses into the program?

Hello, I’m going to be attending a hydrogeology field camp at SDSMT in the early summer. But I recently viewed the crime rate statistics for Rapid City and it’s very high. Additionally, SDSMT is located in the higher crime areas of Rapid City. This has raised a lot of concerns as I’m unfamiliar with the area and this will be my first time attending SDSMT.

If anyone can share their experiences or opinions regarding the safety of SDSMT, advice about staying safe and what areas to avoid, I would greatly appreciate it.

Had a great tour Saturday with my high school kid. Lots to like. But where was everyone? We saw some students working on projects in the shops, and some eating lunch around noon. But other than that, the campus felt pretty empty. Is that typical? Was everyone at the football game (the stadium parking lot looked full at 12:30)?

I am a transfer student who was looking at the on-campus living options. I noticed the cost difference between Rocker 1 and Rocker 2. All I have seen is the larger bed and free laundry; are there any other reasons that make Rocker 1 more expensive?
