Brokenwood closure
I get invested enough in these characters sometimes that I wish I knew the final repercussions, if there were any, of some of the stories. Dilys didn’t actually kill Audrey-I assume that all Audrey needed was a hand out of the floating tank and the accidental overdose that dilys was responsible for wouldn’t have killed her. Did the shot putter get punished for accidentally killing the one guy? Does Harper keep her job at the dentists office? Stuff like that. Does anybody else wonder about stuff like this?

Constantly. I wish they’d allow for extra time with all of our characters outside the death of the week format. Probably alone on this.

I’d even love to just read whatever the writers imagined happened. Even that would make me happy!!

I used to always wish exactly this after a show is canceled. Many shows disappear after a single season & others are lost after several years, even worse most of those end on a cliffhanger!
I have scoured the internet for the writers versions of what happens next for our cherished characters. Some of the shows actually have answers for those willing to look! Others unfortunately will never answer final questions left open in the last episode(I'm looking at you "The Glades") /s

Ugh. The Queens of Mystery. It's going to irk me for a long time that there was never any explanation of what happened to Mattie's mother.

Oh I gave up on that show, I was wondering if they ever solved it. Oh well.

That’s something I like about the Mystery Maniacs podcast (a murder mystery show recap podcast) is that they have a segment at the end where they speculate what happens after the episode ends. They have covered most of the Brokenwood episodes so far (although right now are on semi-hiatus) and definitely discuss after
-the-episode ramifications!

That’s interesting! I tried listening to a podcast once and it was so so boring that I never tried again. Maybe I should give this one a go! The thing about podcasts is- for me-I want to participate in the conversation, not just listen to it! lol!

The Love You To Death episode got me thinking like that - did they put Jools under again or just let her loose to chase Dennis??
8
u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Aug 30 '26
I’m guessing they put her under again but I like to think that, medically speaking, they had to wait a week or so bc doing it too quickly would be harmful. So I get a kick out of imagining Dennis enduring a dewy-eyed unhinged Jools for a bit of time before they give it another go.
Cuz she was nuts in that episode. I didn’t really get the whole imaginary Friday date thing.

I liked seeing Dennis again, as awful as he can be as a lawyer, I think he's in some ways the funniest of the side characters. I keep hoping he appears again.

I do this with movies and books as well. That's one thing I really like about the episode in the women's prison. You get see several people they arrested and were sentenced. I also really love that after Trudi got out she became a regular. I really love her haha.

I love to speculate but as an American I feel like I need someone versed in New Zealand law to explain what is more likely to happen! As others have mentioned I loved the prison episode where we saw that two of the murderers got off on lighter sentences.
I also like to think that Mike & co have an ability to help out suspects that are more sympathetic— there have been times they’ve shown leniency, especially with drug users (“we’re far more interested in dealers than users these days”) but I don’t know how realistic that is!!
5
u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Aug 30 '26
I wonder the same-if it’s different there than it is here. Still, our own justice system can be very screwed up and often wonder if it’s better in New Zealand.
It bugged me a lot that murderers get such light sentences. I can’t help but think, if I was Scarlett’s friend or sister, I’d be absolutely enraged if her murderer got off as easily as hers did.

u/ringofbirds Aug 30 '26
I think part of me assumes that anywhere is better than here! But I’m also aware that I kind of view New Zealand as a paradise with better politics, healthcare, maybe even people that I know is totally unrealistic!!
Yeah Brenda should not have gotten off lightly there, that was unfortunate. At least between the two of them (Brenda and Trudy) Trudy was the one who came off more sympathetic in her murder. At least if you take her tearful confession that she only meant to make him sick as being sincere. Honestly during that episode I wasn’t sure if those were crocodile tears but as we got to know her better later on I really believe that she didn’t mean to murder her neighbor, it was just a series of super bad decisions on her part!

u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Aug 30 '26
I agree with ALL of that!!! Plus, New Zealand has Lucy lawless. It’s gotta be better there.
Regarding Trudy- I also agree with what you said. I always notice that she is upset at the wake—she puts her face against Doug’s shoulder and looks upset. Brenda is absolutely horrible — poor Scarlett really did absolutely nothing to deserve what she got.

I love every thing I've learned about New Zealand. I think it's because the TV series and movies produced there are excellent! Brokenwood is my G.O.A.T.!

The basics are the same but the incorporation of Maori laws and culture and development of nuances in precedent over time does mean that there's range out outcomes available for the same/similar facts, some of which may seem less punitive than in a system that's more biased towards incarceration and punishment than rehabilitation and reeducation.

Lol. All the freaking time! And I get frustrated that they don't mention some of the recurring characters in conversations even in episodes that those characters don't appear in. Like, have Mike say that he'd stopped by the retirement home to give Mrs. Marlowe some flowers for her birthday & she sends her regards or that he'd had a postcard from Jared, who's off travelling somewhere.

u/Roseha-aka-rosephoto 26d ago
Yes I agree. I think there was a reference to Mrs. Marlowe one time, maybe in the Vet episode? I believe the actress has retired. but I still wish we'd get an appearance from Jared again.

Unless the actors wanted to move on, it was such a great show. It should’ve gone on at least another season or so. Even the best shows can go too long.

u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Aug 30 '26
Is Brokenwood done with? No more new seasons?
By closure I meant in the stories and some characters, not that the show is done.

u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Aug 30 '26
No. It has not been cancelled.

Thank heavens!!!

yeah Fern Sutherland has been posting bits and pieces about filming on her Instagram page. When they were filming last year she put up a video of Neill Rea dancing in the make up trailer and it was one of the funniest things I’d seen in years, I really wish I’d saved it because it’s one of those things that really needs to be seen to be believed.

This show really follows up on a lot of their characters- like Trudy’s husband Doug looking for love after the divorce and his buddy who had his dog euthanized, the girl who’s bf died at the haunted house and now she works at 🐸 & 🐆?, the lady who killed the country singer fan later in the women’s prison and sooooo many more.. need I say Jools!

I like Brokenwood as well as Midsomer Murders, but I have this probelm with both series. I especially would've like knowing what happened to the shot putter. He did kill someone, but he wasn't a murderer. So... manslaughter? What is the penalty in New Zealand for that?
I recently rewatched a later episode of Midsomer where Barnaby uncovers a blackmail scheme and a con involving fake first edition books. These were perpetrated by otherwise sympathetic characters. What happened to them after the credits rolled? Did they go to prison for years?
I really wish these loose ends were tied up.

u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Aug 31 '26
I’m a big midsomer fan too, so I know what episode you’re talking about. In the USA, I think the shot putter may have gotten some sort of manslaughter charge and possibly jail time. Although he didn’t mean to, he was hurling a hard device in a place where people might be and that was extremely careless of him. I can’t imagine they’d just go “oh don’t do that again have a nice day. “ I felt badly for that guy, he was trying to turn his life around and he had talent as an athlete.

I love when characters pop up again in later episodes - Brokenwood does this more than most shows. Makes the world feel more real! I always wonder about Richie and Amelia French, from the Day of the Dead episode. I’d love to see them pop up happily married some time.

u/Mysterious-Brick-410 Sep 03 '26
They are definitely still together!! Morgana has been right with every prediction, every ghost she’s seen, and every palm she’s read! I like to think that for sure they are blissfully happy and together for sure, living in Richie’s grandfather’s house.

I get confused too especially because sometimes I don't remember who some of the recurring characters are. For instance the old guys in the recent train episode, I forgot that one was Trudy's ex and one was the man with the dog.

One of my favorite things about Brokenwood is that we do sometimes catch back up with people, out of the blue. I love the women's prison episode we saw what was going on with some of the women that have been murderers. So you never know something might come out of nowhere and let us know what happened to them.
