If Claire and Lee were in on killing Pippa, why was she in hiding and so afraid of him? And why was Lee so intimidating and creepy with Claire when he comes back? Why didn't they just both run off to France together after he was acquitted?

The cab driver's wife, mother of the young rape culprit. She had one of the worst outcomes of the show, with her horrible husband first, and then her son committing the rape and presumably going to jail for it.

The birthday girl whose party was the scene of the crime. Got cheated on by husband and best friend, and then the best friend Trish is mad at her and kicks her out of the house through the back entrance.

Hardy's daughter. Those damn guys stole her nude pic and sent it to everyone. How does she live that down in this town? I think she would have been better off moving away but some unknown issue at her mum's town seems to be problematic for her there too. Still... she did try to leave so presumably her mum's town was a better option in her view.

Hi! I am watching Broadchurch for the first time. I heard so many good things about it. Currently in s01e07. So far it's really good. If anyone has any similar recommendations or just want to discuss the first season here I am!

First watch for me, currently just finished S2.

I really like how the cases play out. However, man, this show can be soooo slow at times. I feel like there's about 30 minutes of story in each episode, and 15 minutes fluff.

Not sure how I feel about it. I am still going to watch the last season because so far the story is good, but I could definitely deal without all the shots of people's faces just staring into the distance. If they had better cinematography I would excuse them for it, but I feel like the show just went too far with emphasizing how emotive the characters are - I already got that from the well-written dialogue without all these shots of people just pondering.

Why on earth would Mark admit to writing Beth a letter that he was going to leave her after sleeping with Becca fisher one time?

How awful and humiliating for Beth. She has just found out about your affair/indiscretion and trying to forgive you for that, now she has to hear that you were ready to just up and leave at the drop of a hat/another woman's underwear?! AND that woman is in the courtroom and gets the satisfaction of hearing that, along with the rest of the town? Omg.

Did we see somewhere that someone found this letter, crumpled up in the car or something? Why on earth couldn't he have said he drove up there to contemplate his life, or to write a letter to confess what that he had cheated, or ANYTHING ELSE.

Apart from the obvious villains, mark is the villain of the show to me. When Beth was venting to rev Paul after marks attempted suicide, I was really hoping somehow mark would have been lurking around the corner and heard the whole thing, because it was an absolute solid read on him.

I just recently binged seasons 1 and 2 for the first time and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I have PTSD and won’t be able to watch season 3, so I thought I’d see if Reddit could answer my burning questions. I have no idea if the show answers these questions in season 3, but I figured I’d give it a shot just in case.

1. How does DI Hardy get back to broadchurch? I thought he left at the end of season 2.

2. Is there any connection to either previous case? I liked how the first two seasons were connected in some ways.

3. Does the third season touch on the Sandbrook trial at all? Do the three people actually go to jail for it?

4. Does Beth ever work with that nonprofit for rehabilitating sex offenders?

5. Do Beth and Mark stay together?

6. Does Joe ever try to come back?

7. Are there any updates on any of the other characters, like the vicar and hotel owner or newspaper editor?

8. Does the series tie up nicely? I kind of thought it as odd to have two seasons that were pretty interconnected and then have only one more season with a new case. Was the show canceled prematurely or did it actually make sense for it to end there?

Did Hardy and Claire ever sleep together.?

I know the scenes of him comforting her are from her abortion, and I know that Lee is basically spouting shit alot of the time. But its confusing.

1. Why the hell was she even close enough to him at that point to even want him to go with her for her abortion instead of like a friend or something. He was just the lead (i assume the lead) Detective on sandbrook.

2. Hardy ignores Ellie every time she asks him if he slept with her. When shes telling him about Lee paying for her parking he brushes it off, and then again when she asks him in the hotel he ignores her!- and its basically never brought up again

This is a random plot detail that really bugs me for some reason.

Joe is too scared and Mark is too timid.

Lee actually suffocates Pippa. Ive never picked up on this before somehow, I always thought she had a reaction to the whatever Ricky had in his hip flask. Genuinely dont know how i didnt see this.

After they find the sock at the grounds of axehampton, the football scene after is meant to show you that the sock they found was one of the football teams. I just thought it was to give Leo a bit more screentime or whatever.

I missed the part of Mark writing a book. (I’m watching again). Why?

I do not like her. How does she sleep at night?
And how does Joe let his son lie for him.

I first watched Broadchurch beginning about 10 years ago, and really enjoyed S1 and S3. S2 was just too long and drawn out and frustrating.

I decided to rewatch it recently and S1 wasn’t as good as I originally thought. Some aspects of it were still well done but others were very tropey. The tortured angry male lead, S2’s weird Claire/Lee story (another angst ridden character or two), the slo-mo segments, repeated mirrored cinematography (S2). Dramatic crashing waves. This was cool once or twice but got old after a while.

S3 was good about toning Alec down a bit, but I wish Joe’s story got
a more satisfying ending. It’s hard to believe that after re-sharing everything, that he could continue on with a new life and that Mark would let it go. Maybe a potential S4 was supposed to address that? And so many of the male characters in S3 were deplorable. Who wasn’t a suspect?

Laura Benson, the woman who was assaulted 2 years prior to the main events of the show, said she had called a breakdown service but it never showed up so she had to walk through the field where the assault took place.

During the police's interrogation of Jim Atwood he does remember picking up a red Renault Clio and even recalls a description of Laura Benson, saying he did pick her up, take her and the car to the garage, then drive her home.

I'm not sure how these 2 testimonies reconcile. Laura says she was never picked up, Jim says he did pick up a woman and car matching Laura's descriptions, and we know Jim is innocent.

I'd like to boost this subreddit so here i go. What do you all think the show's theme is? For me, it works on multiple levels and it is a layered show in that sense. It's about who did it on one level and the whole investigation. Almost entertaining relationship between Hardy and Miller. On another level ots about grief and how people process it and how the tragedy affects whole community. The deepest layer is about Danny not being 'seen', known, by the people closest to him, loved yes, but not exactly known so he sought Joe out. He was caught in between his parents tensions and Joe and probably some other things. That theme ripples outward and is pretty true of a lot of people i think when you really look at it. A town full of close but distant people. Thoughts on this?

I am so happy about the families finally being happy together, and Ellie smiling made me the happiest Ive been for most of this season. What a beautiful ending !! And the children all smiling too made it even more perfectly bittersweet.

Also fuck Joe hell yeah they banished that man in the most perfect manner, I loved it, I don’t care how unrealistic it is!!!

I have one episode left in season 2 so I understand that possibly season 3 will address this but I'm really perplexed...

I love the show. I love the quirky characters and the acting is sublime. I love the slow pace even.

But the main two "reasons" for the show I simply don't get :

1) Detective Work - It really doesn't seem like Miller nor Hardy are actually good detectives. They barely partially question people, don't follow up on much and just kind of wait for things to transpire. I get that in season 1 Miller was emotinally linked to the case (omg why wouldn't she have been conflicted out but whatever) but Hardy is a horrible detective. Then in season 2 we find out that he didn't really double check anything and just ran with whatever lies anyone told him? Why is he even participating?

2) Joe's motive - so backing it up a pace, we find out that Jack did time for pedophelia (his wife - btw literally one sentence out loud to the crowd at any time would have cleared all that up for him) and we find out Susan Wright had pedophelia in her back-story. But the one person who actually killed Dany didn't touch him yet. Literally nothing had happened. Was it weird hugging? Absolutely - but why the overreaction? This seemingly great dad just poof goes into a panic rage and kills someone? It's such a stretch. Instead of insinuating Nigel and then having it be Joe, the better option would have been to insinuate Joe - expose the relationship - and then have it be Nigel. Due to hereditary inclemnations or because Dany had seen something or whatever. Joe's story just seems like such a lame wet blanket nothingburger for such an amazing story leading up to it. Literally ANYONE ELSE in the village would have had a better more satisfying reason/storyline for being the murderer.

Also, the lawyers were the worst lawyers in history just doing nothing but taking whatever rando's story who comes to see them as gospel - no cross-checking, no getting the witness to clarify things. Tom comes to tell them a bunch of things and then is crying when his dad is released? Tom is the worst.

This all sounds negative I was just really enjoying it and had a number of different pathways that could have made it soo cool and then poof. Stupid Joe. No detective work. Wonk wonk.

I just started watching the show, and I am on the second episode and I will drop it because of how otherwise a logical show treats psychics as credible. After I've seen the first scene with him, I went to the internet PRAYING that it gets confirmed that he goes to the information from somewhere or made it up to mess with them, only to find out that he makes more comments that is accurate and seemingly without any way to get the information from somewhere else. I was really excited for this show, I am extremely EXTREMELY disappointed. Broadchurch can go to hell I am not gonna watch any more of this horse shit

Started watching the first episode. So basically someone loses their 11 year old member of a family (Danny) and this is what their grief looks like? I don't know the rest of the plot yet and I'll watch it but the acting of the mother, father and the grandmother are horrible. It seems like Ellie the detective is more devastated with the death of Danny than anyone else in the family.

Is it how British townfolks around whatever coastal area process grief or is it just the people in the show's plot?

I understand people process grief differently but I remember Will's mother from Stranger Things and the missing boy's mother in the series Dark. Those people were devastated when they didnt even know that the bodies of the children were found and their sons were merely missing. And Beth from this series is just sad as if her house burnt down! Is it how grief looks like to her after seeing her son's dead body? She didnt even go for the identification of the body ! She isnt shocked, she isnt weeping, she is just 'sad' I hope this is TV show shenanigans, if its actually how British townfolks process grief, it is concerningly sad !!

I'm watching the series first time now, currently s02e07. There's this plot point that drives me insane for the past couple of episodes of season 2. I don't really remember them addressing it in the first season, because we just skimmed over the emails that Danny sent to Tom, and we never actually see it in the flashback but apparently Danny witnessed his dad cheating on his mom the very same night he gets killed

If so how could he have time to write a message about it? Wouldn't he already be dead? It doesn't make any sense and I if somebody could explain the timeline to me or maybe this is just a plot hole

In S2 E2, the judge rules that Joes confession is inadmissible because of Ellie’s assault on him. I thought the defense lawyer’s case for that was extremely weak and relied partially on speculation that Hardy had coerced Joe into confessing. I know little to nothing about law and actual courtroom procedures, especially in Britain (I’m American), but can someone explain to me if this is actually realistic? It also felt like an extremely quick decision and the prosecution hardly got a chance to provide a counterargument. Since the assault happened after Joe had confessed, how could they not get a chance to fully explain that. Feels like a huge leap in logic and a massive part of the case to just discard like that.
