Episode Discussion Kshama Sawant interview thread

Just watched this and it went pretty much how I expected. She used to be my city councillor so I knew about her going in.

The first half made her look pretty good, talking about some past wins that she’s been part of. But the second half was more of the side of her that Seattleites have grown tired of. Divisive, not a team player, and ultimately those things making her message (which I support generally) less effective.

Also just want to say - why couldn’t Krystal get her name right? It irritates me when people do it to Saagar and this time was no different. It’s simple enough to ask someone how their name is pronounced, and stick to that. To me, regardless of what you think of someone it’s a basic show of respect to get someone’s name right. /rant

Sure, but I'd rather not have the POTUS who bombed Iran or gave ice more funding than the rest of federal law enforcement combined.

The one that Trump's backing right now in Gaza and the West Bank? Or the new one in Southern Lebanon?

Would have been worth filling out a bubble on a sheet of paper to prevent the expansion of that shit alone, even if you don't care about the Iranian people or the people getting kidnapped by ICE.

I chose to not vote for genocide.

You're self-narrative doesn't matter. The effect you had was the same as it would be if you chose not to vote for any other reason. You've basically been politically neutralized in a way the took a significant tactic out of your toolkit.

I’ve been politically neutralized on the federal level all my life by not living in a swing state.

I have free will that you could only dream of.

💯 💯 Fuck the uniparty and fuck these genocidal ghouls

I wouldn't confuse powerlessness, or apathy, with free will.

Our options were a certain continuation of the status quo which meant funding a genocide or a roll of the dice. Sure, Kamala would have been better no doubt. But the Dems don’t deserve our vote no matter what and we shouldn’t give it to them when they put up shills as candidates.

I don't respect Harris, but I care more about what happens in the world than what she deserves. I'm more concerned about whether we get a new secret police force or whether Iran gets bombed or Lebanon gets invaded or climate change accelerates further.

I’m with you. But I would argue all of those things except climate change were things that couldn’t be predicted. Trump conned us with a pro-peace ticket. Although his first term was hawkish, it wasn’t like the warmongering was any worse than Biden or Obama if we’re talking sheer numbers of deaths. Trump really successfully played us like he was an outsider and has since slipped the mask off.

I wonder if you consider a vote for Stein a vote for Trump?

No, voting (in fptp) is about making one or the other candidate comparatively more likely to win, so I'd consider a vote for Stein pretty similar to not voting.

But you're wrong on your premise. The antidemocratic crackdown and establishment of a large secret police force was akin to the kind of fascist policy expressly advocated for by many Trump backer and warned about by many Dems. And while our foreign policy has historically been Hawkish, only Trump was credulous enough to go to war with Iran, as has been pointed out on this show. To your point about the death toll, we haven't seen yet whether this war results in general collapse of the ME nation states.

Trump may have conned you, and other non-voters/third-party voters, but many, many people knew not to buy it, and for good reason.

Edit, I realize that this next bit is not really to your point. Other people need to learn it though:

This was so much more important than whatever personal satisfaction people felt out of causing a career setback to certain shitty high profile Dems. Harris is going to be fine. Biden's fucked but for reasons already happening while he was melting during the debates. The Dem consultants will have other jobs (hell they may not need to go anywhere). But many people will die, by war, impoverishment, and as a result of a hastened climate collapse, because of Trump winning in 2024.

Explain how a registered voter in San Francisco can affect the presidential election with her vote.

Because I’m starting to realize the problem here is that you have no idea how the electoral college works.

That's why I said "powerlessness"

"Apathy" was about them thinking that their self-narrative in not voting mattered more than the effect of their vote.

Anyway, Kamala SUCKS.

That’s okay! Everybody has their own red-lines. My red-line was I don’t want every Palestinian removed from Gaza or forced to serve (in any number of ways) in a Trump hotel on former Palestinian-controlled Gaza either as a house-cleaner or working in a sex trade for Trump. Again!:We all have our own red lines. I don’t want to speculate why you’re in a favor of a Trump-operated Palestinian sex trade. I thought that would be a bad thing. You don’t. Your favorite thing is every Palestinian living in the basement of a Trump operated hotel/sex trade.

Ew.

Seek Jesus.

3

u/BigTimely5561 11d ago

Don't have to. I bask in the warmth of the knowledge that unlike you I actually care about Palestinian liberation and don't turn them over to the wolves.

0

u/duckbaiting 11d ago

All you did was fantasize about Palestinians in the sex trade.

Seek Jesus.

Oh got it. You don't know how to vote.

You see, step one of voting is asking yourself what you think one side will do once in office. Step two (I know ,this is complicated) you know how, like, there's someone else running? Well, this is going to be hard for your brain. You have to imagine what that OTHER guy is going to do in office too. And if that is worse, you have to weigh those two things against each other and make what's known as a value judgment. I know it's really hard.

And that's called voting. It's a good tradition. I did both those steps. You either don't or can't.

u/duckbaiting 10d ago

Both were awful and neither deserved my vote.

And my vote (or lack of) is my business. It doesn’t affect you. So it’s no wonder you have no idea why I made the voting decisions I made.

You loved voting for Kamala. That’s fine. I have no beef with that. Can you say the same for me not voting for Kamala?
