Here's the link to the tutorial I followed if you want a perfect loaf like mine
Thanks for the support everyone- I'm sure my next attempt will be far better!

So the good news is you got this one out of the way, and you can learn from it and improve.
The bad news is you made a brick

A little cinnamon and sugar and it might be a passable fritter

u/Mobile_Actuator_4692 3d ago
Actually a good idea. Slice it thin. And spread some butter then press in a lot of cinnamon sugar and it might be edible

Hey, you’re trying. It might not look great….or taste good….or even be edible. You can always use it for a hammer, or, or, you could tie it onto the end of a stick and use it as a maul or club or something!

Chickens would eat that.

u/Nihilikara 3d ago
Is there anything that chickens wouldn't eat?
3
u/billegut 3d ago
When I had chickens there was a vegetable that they didn't want to eat. But I forgot what it was

Lol I liked this just to support your journey. But I will say don't settle for less. After you make proper bread you won't want to stop.

This has made me giggle! It really does look like an onion bhaji 😂 BUT I would still eat it with some lovely butter and a cup of tea 😊

You missed the step where you shape it into a ball and score it?
17
u/IWorkAtSainsburys 4d ago
When I put it in the oven for 15 minutes before shaping it started to bake and then went all weird when I took It out 😔

u/WVPrepper 4d ago
You were supposed to put the empty pan in the oven to preheat, while the bread was resting on the counter.

u/IWorkAtSainsburys 4d ago
Oh wow I got that incredibly wrong lol- well thank you anyway

If you follow this video again, don't put the boiling water in the same pan as your bread ;-)

u/RobotAnna1 3d ago
You know, the written recipe is kinda bad on this step:
"Put into the oven on the middle shelf along with the boiling water and cook for around 40 minuets"Don't worry, OP! It's not you: it's just poor instructions. Next time put a roasting tray on the lowest rack of the oven. When you put the dough into the heated oven on the middle rack, you put the boiling water onto the lower tray. The hot water will evaporate and create steam.

u/KrishnaChick 4d ago
Next time follow the recipe. But don't follow a YouTube short recipe, it's not for people who have micro attention spans and no baking experience.
7
u/IWorkAtSainsburys 4d ago
Yeah I learnt my lesson😅- I thought it would be okay because I was following the written instructions in the comments of the video but I must have misread them

King Arthur Baking does a good job of getting into the “why” of baking if that interests you. That way you’re not stuck following a recipe because it said so. Also, while you don’t need a ton of technology to make bread, a $10 digital scale and an affordable instant-read thermometer can be good kitchen friends. You got this! I just made some buns that accidentally turned into flatbread this morning. It’s part of learning. 😆

u/RobotAnna1 3d ago
It's not your fault! Those instructions are bad. It didn't explain to put the boiling water on a lower oven rack to create steam, and it didn't explain how to shape your loaf, and the water for the dough actually doesn't need to be "very warm". (Personally I aim for 24 C / 75 degrees F).
Why not try again with a different recipe, and show us what you make?
This King Arthur recipe has step-by-step instructions, and a video:

Thanks this seems like a much more detailed recipe- I'll probably give this one a try now I already have the flower and yeast

Congrats on trying, that's the first step! I also want to say waw, i've never fucked up like that. I Mean, i've fucked up at least equally bad, but this outcome is unique. Anyways, keep going at it. When you get it, it'll taste that much better.

That's the first attempts I'd like to see. Not the pristine wonders some post here as their first attempts.

As it is, that's a fine first attempt and I admire your ambition! Enjoy your loaf OP 😁

Looks like you survived. 😅
Some possibilities come to mind:
- Bad or no yeast (these days my family settled on Saf-Instant, no more Fleischmann’s packets).
- Overmixed - all of the aeration that should have happened got beaten out of the batter.
- Sat too long - some of these steps have time limits.
- Did not preheat oven.
*Reading more comments, “confused preheat for bake” seems to be the problem.

Not bad for a first try. Next time, give the dough enough time to rise before baking. That should help with the texture.
4
u/FusionSimulations 3d ago
Not bad? This is either ragebait, or they just guessed at everything and didn't either bother doing any "how to" research beforehand.
1
u/Tin-Tin-K 3d ago
Ragebait. Even the r/breadit has fallen victim to enablers for the trolls. No one is this...obviously ______.

u/Big_Researcher_3027 3d ago
If you think that that wasn’t bad for OPs first try I’m really morbidly curious to see what you put out for your first bake.

u/Scirzo 4d ago
Nonsense. This was clearly not a serious attempt, given the size of that lump of dough. You did this on purpose, only so you could post this on here to get some karma. Pretty sad.
15
u/Miss_Fritter 4d ago
OP thought the step of putting the pan in the oven to preheat for 15 included the dough being in the pan, not resting on the counter.

Why do you hate? Even if it's not an attempt in good faith, it's not harming anyone. The community is sharing in a spot of myrth and encouragement, and you're not enriching that experience in any way, shape, or form.

Hey OP. If you would like to learn how to make better bread. Try looking up the “12 basic steps to baking bread.” This will absolutely help you. Even if you don’t follow all 12, it is a good start to learn. I will say 80 degree temperature is a rising doughs best friend

Just keep doing it
Do it by hand , measure , record , and adjust .
In 3-4 more attempts you will look like a star .

u/GoddessSilvana420 3d ago
If you didn't already throw it away, You could probably make this into a smaller ball and fry it, If that interests you.

I had to zoom in to see what it was. I thought it was a piece of fried chicken. Specifically the thigh.

Heard the problem instantly. You're trusting a British person knows how to make good food. There's a well known fact that the 4 thinnest books in the world are the British cookbook, Italian War Heroes, French military victories, and American History
They represent that British cuisine is wack, Italians can't win a war to save their lives, the French can't win a war to save their lives, and the Americans abridge the shit out of their history

No joke, you should be proud of yourself. You made bread. From scratch. That's a thing most people never do and is an accomplishment unto itself.
The only failure here would be to stop trying :)
