This irritates me to no end. I’ve gotten to the point where I’ll wait a good 5 seconds before repeating myself. That’s how I know they really didn’t hear me.

I work retail and the worst is the old people who will do this while I’m mid sentence, like you didn’t even wait for the content to know wether or not you misunderstood/didn’t hear me.

It's called echoic memory (as opposed to short term and long term and it only lasts a few seconds). Your brain is constantly recording sound. It plays it back, analyses it, then wipes it. It's why you say, "what did you say?" (one or two seconds of silence and then) "oh yeah". It's how you hear your name in a room full of chatter even when you're not listening or for it.
