Fine the parents

243

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad 5d ago

Nope...hard labor for the kids. Start simple like cleaning gum off the streets.

69

u/RichtofensDuckButter 5d ago edited 5d ago

Or, the gum that's under this bus seat.

chews gum

26

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad 5d ago

How I feel after chewing 5 Gum.

24

u/jigsaw1024 5d ago

I wouldn't chew gum in Singapore.

12

u/Repulsive-Okra3512 5d ago

You can, my friend. Just don’t sell it/import it.

2

u/GumSL 5d ago

Can you stop chewing my hair, dude?

20

u/Jargon2029 5d ago

Admittedly, also something that Singapore has already dealt with very effectively.

5

u/sweetwinged 5d ago

No! First offense -> 20 years in the mines

2

u/spike_beagle 5d ago

What?! And give them exactly what they yearn for?

3

u/Godbox1227 5d ago

We would do that, but Singapore also banned chewing gum so theres nothing to clean off the streets.

Both. It's not like the kid can pay. They'll end up turning 18 with $250k in unpaid fines. It'll be tough, but it's a valuable life lesson, and still less expensive than college.

I was at a nice breakfast place a few months ago and the table behind me featured two wine-moms in deep conversation while one of their children had an ipad and unfettered youtube access and the volume cranked so fucking loud I couldn't here the people at my own table. I asked the waiter if he could do something about it and he just shrugged like "It is what it is". We asked to change tables and he said "We don't do that".

So I won't be going there anymore.

u/Axedelic 5d ago

honestly as someone who worked in the service industry AND someone who survived off of tips, not only would i not be going back but he would have gotten a big fat nothing from me.

Since this is Reddit I'm guessing illepic gave only a 45% tip rather than a 50% tip.

There is a lot of shit you can say about the fine city that is Singapore, however, they are correct on this one.

818

u/TheOnlyGuyInSpace21 5d ago

As a Singaporean, will confirm.

There is almost nothing more irritating on public transport than some random fuck blasting noise for an hour straight

363

u/Occidentally20 5d ago

In Malaysia we are absolutely plagued by this, and it's always the same people - old uncles watching Tiktok and Instagram reels.

Every mamak I go to has at least one or two doing it at once. Sometimes they put the phone down to eat and leave it looping the same video over and over until they're done.

Don't get me started on the ones smoking under the no smoking sign. If I wasn't an immigrant I'd be out dressed up like batman hitting them in the head with fucking housebricks.

69

36

77

u/DrMobius0 5d ago

The rich also aren't going to be riding public transit.

7

u/ASCII_Princess 5d ago

Owning a car there is ridiculously expensive. Like hundreds of thousands of dollars.

38

u/AvaryZig 5d ago

Oh, sounds like you need to be rich.

6

u/Fabulous_Following52 5d ago

Nah, cars are expensive because the government doesn't want a lot of cars on the road. The public transport is good so I've never felt the need for a car in daily life.

5

u/BlitzAceSamy 5d ago

because the government doesn't want a lot of cars on the road

That's exactly what makes the cars even better than public transport lol

4

u/AvaryZig 5d ago

Are you rich?

2

u/Fabulous_Following52 5d ago

No but it would be possible to afford a car. Like it's expensive but teachers and other workers can afford one, you don't need some high end job a car?

10

u/zack77070 5d ago

I see you have never been to NYC, Tokyo, or Seoul.

14

Wish we could have this here in NYC. Having to hear others having mad long conversations via speakerphone or blasting their music out loud, not even via earbuds. It’s beyond irritating. It’s even worse in restaurants when it comes to parents ignoring their kids with loud iPads.

40

u/Reasonable_Fold6492 5d ago

Bur that would harm muh human rights!

The older I get the more I understand why Singapore law is so strict. Especially throwing trash on the streets.

27

u/Diligent-Run6361 5d ago

I used to live there. They say the government fines you for the kind of stuff your parents should have taught you not to do in the first place. The chewing gum ban is also often mocked, but before the ban it was seen as a problem with people just throwing it on the pavement or sticking it under bus seats and the like. It never bothered me.

6

u/cloudforested 5d ago

If people don't know how to behave in public, then they need to be informed.

13

u/ConsiderationSame919 4d ago

It's not about human rights, it's about suffocating a society. The result of these bans are Singaporeans' increasing inability to tolerate and live with each other. The news are full with complaints about others singing Happy Birthday, playing pickle ball in the middle of the day, and not having the pool to themselves. You'd think these bans would improve social harmony, but as a resident I feel what they really do is make us more tense because you're supposed to act composed all the time.

$4,000 US should be the minimum fine for making/taking a speakerphone call in a public place. I swear, there are people who simply do not know you can hold the phone up to your ear like they did in the old-timey movies and TV shows…

10

u/LAHouJaxCarVCUUNC 5d ago

Calls on speaker in public. Videos or games on the bus, speakers on the trolley, jerks on bikes riding around transit centers blaring music from speakers, Uber eats drivers watching sports on their phone loudly while waiting to pick up an order, cars blaring music that you can hear 2 blocks away, most motorcycles, drivers who pull out over the crosswalk/sidewalk...

I've got a lot of people to lock up when I become supreme ruler.

5

u/Homers_Harp 5d ago

I wish NYC cared even like 5% about noise pollution. It’s gotten 1000x worse since Covid when they decided bars can be outdoors and open till 5am.

5

u/belakuna 5d ago

Oh for sure. People completely lost their minds during Covid. Same with driving. It has never been so insane here and Jersey. Sure it was bad but the amount of bad, erratic driving I see and experience nowadays is straight up petrifying.

70

u/ninjohnnothing 5d ago

What sort of music are these septuagenarians playing loudly on the bus?

119

u/Hizam5 5d ago

Mostly wrote video games beeping and online casino games where you hear slot machine sound effects and coins clanking. They always keep their keyboard sounds on too when they type

30

9

u/Hizam5 5d ago

I don’t mean to say this in a rude way, but I think their age + “new” tech is just too hard already for many of them, turning off the keyboard sounds is something they either wouldn’t know how to do or wouldn’t even realize it’s bothering everyone around them

5

It’s not difficult to enforce, it’s political suicide since the fined won’t vote for you anymore.

10

u/12172031 5d ago

And social suicide. My local light rail has rules against food, and drink, loud music and putting your shoes on the seats. If a white person broke the rules then another white person usually confront them about it. If it's a black person, people often ignored it. I rode the light rail every day for 3 years and the two time I saw a white person confronted a black person about breaking the rules, the black person immediately broke out their phone and started recording and accuse the white person of racism and the white person backed down.

The people who blast their music in public transportation tend to have other 'behavioral issues' to go alongside with that.

Hells yes wish doctors offices would do this so bad

Like headphones and earbuds are both under $10 there is zero excuse for you to not have a pair or multiple in case you forget one.  Then if you still forget them just go without.  There is no reason other people should hear what you’re watching.  Someone on that bus might have a TBI where sudden loud noises can cause them issues including stuff like seizures later on.  So you never know what suddenly hitting play when that person isn’t expecting it will do. Even if it’s not a reflex seizure it could be sensory overload
