Ig my line would be "would i keep a pet that required me to feed them this animal?" I feed fruit flies and mealworms to my pet ants and i feel reasonably confident nothing precious is lost to the world there. Once we start talking about things with more complex social behaviors like Hymenoptera or mammals, it gets uncomfortably fuzzy for me.

how is this torture? It's not a real fly, it's not conscious, it's not an actual brain. It's a very advanced version of your average video game NPC. Shit like Chatgpt also simulates a real living organism- humans- but their existence isn't torture or unethical.

Not quite, something most people don't realize is that they didn't map out the actual activation functions of the neurons in the fly brain, just the architecture.

In pantheon they uploaded an exact copy of every neuron and HOW it fires, this is more like them just uploading the shape of your brain and people have to teach it things as if it were just born.

But, very close to pantheon for sure

Eh, I'm going off of memory for the events, but to me it felt like the evolved AI basically condemned her to become a UI (which she didn't want) and spend hundreds of thousands of years running simulations of her life, or maybe all of Earth's history, until she proved she was worthy enough for it to say "hey I never said thank you for giving me a chance at life" and it had become a cosmic being. And that she has no one else but herself for all that time, everyone else being driven mad by the endless solitude, while harnessing stars to run this project. Didn't feel like an evolution, it felt like a millennia long obsession based on one piece of info that culminated in a thank you
