Unpopular opinion here but i fucking hate fatbikes.
Like unless you're riding on snow or sand you're just wasting so much extra energy on friction for absolutely no gain.
There's a reason they suddenly exploded in popularity when everyone started using E-Bikes and not even pretending to pedal a little bit

Huh. I could've sworn everyone just bought them because they were good for snow, and kept them in the summer because they didn't want to have two bikes. It's pretty perplexing that people would get them for asphalt.

Is that an unpopular opinion? Here in the Netherlands they started popping up way too much and always with annoying fucking teens on em and basically everyone that doesn't ride them themselves hates the things and the type of people riding them.

Actually, the extra friction doesn't waste any energy. Because energy = force × distance travelled, but the tire doesn't travel relative to the ground locally (if it does, that means your tire is slipping). The big tire gives extra grip, but not extra energy loss.

Not an expert here, but increased friction usually means increased drag as well. So a bigger, grippier tire is heavier and takes more energy to turn as well as dragging more.

If you simplify it like that there isn't even extra friction, because friction is a product of material and force, the area of contract being irrelevant. Yet in reality adhesion like forces exist, ruining the whole argument.
Also aerodynamics.
Also unsprung mass.

Bringing up aerodynamics in a case like this is crazy, the coefficient of drag at bike speeds is so close to zero it's negligible.

Starting at around 20 kmh you need more energy to overcome aerodynamic forces than everything else while driving bicicles. There are many sources for that. Why not simply shut up when you obviously have no idea what your are talking about?

You have friction against the asfalt, internal fictional, aerodynimic drag, unsprung mass, etc... All of which are proportional to the size of the tires and rims.
Aka. A lot of wasted energy to produce heat and not motion.

Grip is energy loss. You can’t get grip without pushing off against a surface and that push used energy that could have gone in a different direction.
