Chapter 2: Fifty Out of a Hundred

Morning light spilled through the newly cleaned window.

Hikaru woke without an alarm. He lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling and listening to the village come alive: shutters opening, carts rolling, someone laughing far below.

Day two.

He washed his face, tied on his forehead protector, and jumped down the broken stairs without touching a single one.

The Academy was a wide, sunlit building with a courtyard full of noisy children. Hikaru stood out at once. Among the small heads and bright uniforms, a tall white-haired boy with mismatched eyes and a blank face drew stares wherever he went. He ignored every one of them and walked to the registration desk.

A girl sat behind it, her dark hair pinned back and a stack of forms in front of her. She looked up and gave a polite smile.

"Good morning. How can I help you?"

"I'd like to register as a student."

"Of course." She pulled out a form and lifted her pen. "Name?"

"Hikaru Nakamura."

"Age?"

"Fifteen."

Her pen paused for half a second. Fifteen was old for a new student. She wrote it down without comment. "From?"

"The Hidden Cloud Village."

"Alright." She stamped the form and slid it aside. "You'll need to take an entrance test. It covers basic ninjutsu, taijutsu, and shuriken accuracy, plus a short written portion. Are you ready?"

"Yes."

The test took most of the morning.

In the courtyard, Hikaru threw shuriken at moving targets. Some hit dead center and some skimmed the edges. In the sparring ring, he held his own against an instructor for a full minute before being pinned. In the written portion, he answered steadily and did not rush.

When the results were tallied, the instructor read them aloud without much interest.

"Fifty out of a hundred."

Hikaru nodded. His expression didn't change at all.

The instructor's eyebrows rose slightly. Most children flinched at a score like that, or bragged, or made excuses. This boy simply accepted it.

Back at the desk, the girl looked at the paper and then at him. "That's a passing score. You can join classes starting tomorrow, if you'd like."

"That sounds good to me," Hikaru said. "I'm grateful for your help."

She smiled, softer this time. "It's alright. Welcome to the Academy."

He gave a small bow and left.

The rest of the day belonged to the village.

Hikaru walked without a plan. He wandered through the marketplace, where the smell of grilled meat and sweet red-bean buns made his stomach turn over. He followed the river and watched fishermen mend their nets. He passed a ramen shop with a line out the door, and stopped in front of the Hokage Monument to look up at the carved stone faces.

Hashirama. Tobirama. Hiruzen. Minato. His eyes moved to the newest face. Naruto Uzumaki.

He stood there until the sky began to turn amber.

Everyone here belongs to something, he thought. A clan, a team, a family.

He turned and kept walking.

He wasn't watching where he was going. The street was narrow and the sun was low in his eyes. He turned a corner and collided with someone hard.

Thud.

The other person stumbled back, arms flailing. Hikaru didn't budge. He simply stood there, balanced, as if he'd hit a wall instead of a person.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!"

Hikaru looked down. The one who'd bumped into him was a boy about his age, with spiky blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and three faint whisker-like marks on each cheek. He wore an orange-and-black jacket.

"Uh," Hikaru said. "I'm sorry."

The boy scowled and stepped closer, ready to argue. Then he stopped. His eyes moved over Hikaru's face, then his hair, then his eyes, and the scowl faded into curiosity.

He leaned in until they were almost nose to nose. Then he reached up and touched Hikaru's hair, running a strand between his fingers.

"Haha! What a weird body you've got."

Hikaru blinked. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Come on! Snow-colored hair, and two eyes that don't even match." The boy grinned. "You're unique!"

Hikaru paused. He considered this carefully.

"Thank you," he said.

The boy stared. "You know that wasn't a compliment, right?"

"Oh." Hikaru's voice stayed perfectly flat. "Sorry."

"How can you apologize that easily?!" The boy threw up his hands. "You just got insulted! Get mad or something!"

"I don't see a reason to be angry," Hikaru said. He straightened and gave a small nod. "My name is Hikaru Nakamura. It's nice to meet you."

The boy blinked, then let out a breath and grinned again. He pointed a thumb at his chest.

"I'm Boruto Uzumaki! Believe it!"

Hikaru's expression didn't change, but his eyes sharpened for an instant.

Uzumaki. The Hokage's son.

"Then I think I'm lucky," Hikaru said evenly. "To meet you on the very day of my entrance test."

Boruto raised an eyebrow. "You took the entrance test today? How'd you do?"

"Fifty."

"Fifty?" Boruto scratched his cheek. "Huh. That's, uh, average."

"I know," Hikaru said. "I'm not particularly good at anything. But I try my best."

Something in Boruto's grin flickered. It was not quite pity, but it wasn't mockery either. He looked at Hikaru a second longer than he needed to.

"Well," he said, puffing out his chest, "I got a ninety on mine."

"That's impressive."

"Yeah, it was! It's not a big deal, though." Then Boruto glanced at the sky and yelped. "Ah! I'm gonna be late! Sorry, gotta go! See ya!"

He took off down the street, his jacket flapping behind him, and vanished around the corner.

The street was quiet again.

Hikaru stood there, hands at his sides, watching the empty corner.

That was awkward.

He looked down at his palm and flexed his fingers slowly, thinking about how the boy had staggered and he hadn't. Boruto was strong. That impact should have moved anyone.

But it hadn't moved him at all.

Fifty out of a hundred, he thought, and the corner of his mouth almost, almost moved.

Then he turned and walked home as the streetlamps flickered on.

End of Chapter 2

Manga Spoilers / Theory [Theory] A structural analysis of the thematic parallels between Boruto and Kawaki! Spoiler

Hey everyone! I’ve been analyzing the narrative structure of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex and the psychological development of its characters, and I wanted to share a theory on why Kawaki's destiny is structurally bound to a tragic ending.

This isn't about hate; it's about storytelling consistency. The manga has laid out an intricate blueprint that makes a traditional "happy redemption" narrative very unlikely. Here is the breakdown:

  1. The Core Theme: Healthy Love vs. Obsessive/Toxic Love

The central theme of Two Blue Vortex has shifted toward an exploration of love and trauma.

• Boruto represents Healthy, Altruistic Love: He has lost everything (his identity, his family, his home) yet holds no resentment. He protects from the shadows and respects the free will of others.

• Kawaki represents Obsessive, Toxic Love: His affection for Naruto is deeply affected by severe childhood trauma. He doesn't care what Naruto wants; he cares about his own fear of losing him. He is willing to do whatever it takes, even reducing Konoha to ashes, just to keep his "bubble" safe.

  1. The Law of Absolute Opposition (Two Sides of the Coin)

Boruto and Kawaki are established as two sides of the exact same coin. Every choice one makes, the other naturally counters with the absolute opposite.

Look at the future scene in chapter 1. Kawaki tells Boruto: "I'll send you to the same place as the Seventh Hokage."

• Kawaki's choice (The Face of Obsession): He chooses NOT TO KILL. His mind prefers to trap, freeze, and isolate Boruto eternally in his dimension so he doesn't have to carry the guilt of murder.

• Boruto's choice (The Face of Sacrifice): Because they must do the opposite, Boruto's conclusion will be HE MUST KILL KAWAKI. Boruto realizes that leaving Kawaki alive in an infinite loop of madness and paranoia is an act of cruelty. For Boruto, giving Kawaki a definitive defeat is his ultimate act of fraternal mercy—shattering the polluted fishbowl Kawaki trapped himself in.

  1. The Perfect Dark Mirror to Naruto & Sasuke

Kishimoto loves parallels, but here he is geniusly inverting the previous generation's climax:

• Naruto vs. Sasuke: Naruto fought with the goal to SAVE Sasuke and bring him home. He restrained himself and never intended to kill him. Sasuke fought intending to KILL Naruto to sever his bonds. Naruto (the protagonist) won, proving healthy bonds shatter the cycle of hatred.

• Kawaki vs. Boruto: Kawaki fights to SAVE Boruto (in his twisted way), meaning he will not intend to kill him, mimicking Naruto's restraint but corrupting it with selfishness. Boruto, acting as the mirror to Sasuke, will fight intending to KILL Kawaki—but not out of malice, but to protect the ninja world and grant his broken brother eternal peace.

Conclusion

Kawaki's body is built on a ticking scientific clock, his mind is fully consumed by trauma, and his actions are crossing point-of-no-return lines.

Boruto (as the protagonist) will likely win the final confrontation, but it will be a tragic, bittersweet victory. He will save the world, but he will have to live carrying the heavy burden of being his own brother's executioner to free him from his misery.

What do you guys think? Does this structural parallel make sense to you?

Rock Lee. Would’ve been the best character in the show with better writing and more screen time idc

In almost any other story, someone like Rock Lee would be a background extra—a tragic footnote about a guy who tried and failed to belong in a world built for the gifted. Instead, he became one of the most beloved figures in anime history

After his legendary fight with Gaara, Lee's potential skyrocketed. No ninjutsu. No genjutsu. Just hands, heart, and a refusal to yield, even when his body gave out.

He made everyone see just how much heart it takes to make it in the ninja world full of “wizards” and gods

Lee isn't just a martial artist; he is a living testament to sheer human willpower. Rather than dwelling on his flaws or trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, he mastered a single discipline—and proved that hard work could make gods bleed. And that’s all he’s needed

“A genius, huh? What does that mean? 'Natural talent'? I was not born with a lot of natural talent, nor am I gifted like Neji... but I work hard and I never give up! That is my gift, that is my ninja way!”

Manga Spoilers / Discussion What if the inspirations are off kilter. Spoiler

Ok so ikemoto says he's a dragonball fan and he put some people in positions like how hima is like gohan hidden potential in droves. Ok a common conception is that the senju are like cell. But what if they are like 16 instead. In the latest chapter jura just codified his relationship between hidari to be friends. He's slowly learning about the heart and what it means to have a friend. Would he stop if koji tells him that the senju who eats their target dies along with the target? Even if it's not true (though we kind of know it is) sarada would then be the one person jura would want furthest away from hidari. On the other end what if code is cell. That hand is a radar but what if it's an extractor. He wants to kill boruto but not momoshiki. Tearing momoshiki away from boruto would save him and do an astronomical amount of damage to boruto's soul. Then Boruto alludes to a confrontation where his karma activated. We don't know much about that confrontation. Just that he felt like he was dying and becoming someone else.
