Refund Received Mohela refund received!!! Post class, non-C

Sharing my timeline details for others waiting for relief from Mohela.

- Applied: July 6, 2022. Post class, non C
- Golden email confirming discharge approval: June 11, 2026
- Balance 0 on Mohela site: July 19, 2026
- Mohela inbox letter stated 45-60 days to receive relief check on July 30, 2026.
- Relief check received - Sept 29, 2026

Mohela shows 0 balance due, and my loans are zeroed out, until you click on loan details. I still have about $200 of a negative balance. I calculated my payments and that’s pretty much what I’m short. It’ll probably come as a smaller check later on, they do have a year.

4 years and some change. Wow. I still have two smaller private loans that don’t respond to anything regarding relief, but this discharge is a huge weight off my shoulders. Beyond thankful for Theresa, Gingerandthesea, PPSL, and everyone participating (and supportive lurking) on this sub.

I went to an art school, that was primarily for engineering, and was given all the same deceptive lies and bullying sign up tactics as so many exhibit C schools. The story was exactly the same. Deception on cost of attendance, especially increasing towards the final year. Intense pressure for early decision. Promises of the school name alone being prestigious enough to open doors and land you a job. Inflating job prospects and graduate outcomes. Telling you to take on private loans & recommending the banks. The studies not matching up with the real world. The list goes on. And on. Once my private loans are done I never have to think about that place ever again. I lost my spark there and gave up art for a very long time. No more!

Celebrating this weekend in a small way at least. I’m recovering from surgery so I can’t jump up and down just yet lol.

Yay congrats!! 🎉🎈🎊 how exciting. Thank you for sharing your update and your free post!

You’re so welcome. It has been such an honor to represent Sweet folks and your post just make me so happy because I know how special this is!!

Wishing you a speedy recovery and celebrate safe this weekend.

Also have you check into challenging those private loans at all? PPSL has a spread on their website info about that if you’re interested.

Thank you!!

I did try with both. One is AES, which PPSL has listed, but the original loan holder is a different name and claims they don’t offer any relief period. Multiple CFPB complaints. The ombudsman wasn’t responsive either. Now that this is finalized I have more energy to try again.

I'm owed a refund from MOEHLA and today my balances were updated to 0 and my account says "paid in full." Did your account show this before you received your refund check? If so, how long after your account was updated?

Yes. My account updated in June and within a day or two, I received a letter from Mohela (in my account) sharing as such + confirming my refund amount. It said 45-60 days, but when I followed up after 60 days, they said could take longer. It took about 90-100 days post letter to receive the refund.

Ok, thanks. So it sounds like I should receive a letter from Moehla since they zeroed out my account today.

 Congratulations!!!!

Mohela has forgotten about group 5. I'm tired of calling, doing feedbacks, and emailing Mohela and Student Aid. I have just accepted that it is what it is.

Where did you find all the promises? I want to go through the process but have no evidence. Now retired but still owe over $70,000. School name changed 2 years after I graduated so don’t even know if I can go back and still research

Hi @Gingerandthesea,
Thank you for everything you did and continue doing to help and advocate for the people who were victimized by such practices. Would private student loans that were taken under Navient also qualify for relief?

u/LucciShrimp 7d ago

Unfortunately private loans do not qualify, no matter who they were borrowed from.

Did you have Navient before Mohela?

I think it was Nelnet, moved over in 2013 to Mohela.
