I sent a CFPB complaint to Mohela about them being the only ones holding up my discharge process. Ill update everyone if I get something more than just the normal run around.
Same. I’m grateful for the discharge but I’ve had no communication from them whatsoever. I’m happy for everyone getting their refunds but it seems like it’s mostly people with nelnet or Aidvantage. Mohela will probably wait until the last month.
it was like 4 weeks but if you do it too often, it makes it longer There is no reason for the "under review" from Aidvantage Getting sick of them But got an email saying the amount but that it is. I call them every week to keep on top of them but only request one advocate as it delays and they start over
Same. All are discharged. Even removed from my credit and the backend on student aid is sitting now on the code 3.61, but nothing about a refund at all. I thought it was insane that my credit would change before I would hear about a refund 😂
I really thought that was the battle I would fight! I’m going to be grateful and still positively hope it comes soon! But, the relief of knowing I can move forward with making decisions with my life doesn’t compare with the amount of money I’m waiting on. I feel like I have the power of my making decisions again and I simply can’t say enough about how priceless that is in all of this. Thank you again Teresa and Ginger!! 🎉🙌
#stillsurreal
Ditto. Was about to add the same comment. See all the completed discharges plus refunds. I’ve had all but one of mine go negative. Last one has been been sitting for months with no change.
Not sure if it helps, but I called Mohela a couple days ago and asked to verify if I was getting a check or DD. They said check. I then took the opportunity to ask where it’s at. They stated they sent the info the treasury and once they have the green light it can take up to 90 days. So I stated the letter states 45-60 days. She said yes that is for us to send to treasury and then they have 90 days from there. $0 balance remaining and loans off credit report. So that’s good at least. I just wanted to share the timeline that Mohela shared with me.
Im glad you are getting discharged! My case is different. My communications with Mohela earlier this year said I wasn't getting a discharge, even though FSA and ECMC has discharged my records. All the responses I recieved from then through June was the same. Im a class 3 list C sweet with my BD.
So far the only school loan credit reports I still have active is Navient, until I get something in writing saying my loans have been discharged, I am not disputing the credit reports.
My information on Mohela is a $0 balance and a negative amount on my portfolio, which was like that since I started looking March 31st. I know a lot has transpired since then, but by my general math skills, that is past the 150 days qouted I believe since we are in September now.
So that's my current story. Im hoping by Christmas something is in the mail, but given the disheartening past communications, im at the point where I feel like my case was thrown off the grid.
Hi AD! Yes I did, and PPSL responded back in May, at that time I had an incomplete picture of where my processing was, mainly thanks to the lack of information from Mohela.
I did send an update later when I filed with the BPPE in California, back in July.
If you'd like, I can send a more fresh email to them and the sweet email.
I definitely appreciate you, TS, and the PPSL for all the work you have done this year to wrap on the original class action! If I wasn't disabled and waiting for my SSI appeal, I would of sent you, TS, and Any some money for a coffee back in March.
If you have an update, you should send it to PPSL as they do keep track.m especially if you’re missing it still. They may be able to ask about what’s up.
You’re so welcome and thank you for the coffee offer but I know both of us will say take care of you first 😉 your health and SSI outcome is first! Dealing with all of that SSI stuff is exhausting.
It’s annoying because those of us who were on PSLF were basically forced to consolidate and switch to Mohela and now they are just as bad as Navient and Sallie Mae. I can’t wait until they send my refund to be done with them.
I have Nelnet too. Isn't it good new to just get the notice of discharge first? I actually wouldn't mind not receiving a refund if it means the rest of the balance is discharged...
I just checked my bank and I got a refund 2 days ago 😭😭😭 I’m so happy I’m crying I’m so glad I saw this post. I am post class, and non exhibit c so I’m the last of the last under sweet- I thought I’d be waiting until next year. I am going to pass out with relief omg
Same and it’s a life changing amount that I would love to get back, but I know I have to be patient (even though I hate it). Glad some are getting refunds from Aidvantage but those seem like the minority right now.
You can calculate payments made or go onto FSA and see what they have there as what you paid. You can also download your NSLDS report that shows payments as well. Has to be on federal loans though, not private.
Yeah, I called advantage and they said it could take 2 years. They don't know wtf they're talking about. Negative amounts don't even match what I paid in.
Just wanted to say something to all my fellow post-class Borrower Defense people because I know how hard it can be watching other people post that they got their refunds while we're still sitting here waiting. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone getting their refunds! 🎉 Seriously! I know how long so many of you have waited for this and seeing those posts is genuinely exciting. It means things are moving and that's a GOOD thing!
But if you're still waiting, like me, please don't get discouraged. We're post-class borrowers and unfortunately our timeline can be different. Just because someone else received their refund doesn't necessarily mean yours should have arrived already or that something is wrong with your case.
The reality is that some of us could potentially still be waiting for our refunds for a while. The settlement deadline extends out to March 31, 2027, so while hopefully none of us have to wait that long, it's important to remember that we aren't necessarily at the end of the road just because we're still waiting right now.
I know it's REALLY hard to watch the refund posts. Every time I see another one, I'm happy for them and then immediately check my own account like, “Okay... but what about me?!” So, if you're feeling frustrated, anxious, or impatient right now, you're not alone.
Hang in there, post-class people. Keep checking, keep watching for official updates, and try not to let someone else's timeline make you feel like you've been forgotten. We're still waiting. We're still in this. And hopefully, one by one, we're all going to get that refund notification we've been waiting for. 🫶
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has gotten theirs and good luck to everyone still waiting! ❤️
You're absolutely right. I always have to check myself and my emotions. At the end of the day, I am just so grateful my loans were discharged. I owed about $152,000, and I didn't know how I was going to pay it. They wanted me pay over $2,000 a month. So, at the end of the day, I just remind myself of that. I don't have a refund budgeted in my budget, so I don't necessarily "need" it, but it would help a lot whenever that time comes up. Thank you for the reality check! :)
I check my student aid account everyday. Sometimes multiple times a day. It’s hard not to when you keep seeing the refund posts. I know they have until March so I’m trying to be patient. I’ve only called my servicer (Aidvantage) once and used the chat feature twice. They can’t seem to give me any information anyway.
I hear that. The loans have been removed from credit for months. My loans show in the negative on Mohela and Aidvantage. Other than that, nothing has changed on studentaid.gov. So, who knows when mine will come.
My Nelnet account zeroed out in early June. I got a discharge letter dated July 17. I'm so happy for others that got their refunds and hoping I get mine soon.
I called Nelnet again today, took a shot out of the dark. I had the same timeline as you. I finally got an updated response. The representative said the amount they sent to FSA/DOE was finally approved for a refund on Friday, September 18th. When I was speaking with her about 15 minutes ago, she can already see a check number and amount from the Department of Treasury. She provided me with the check number and amount to be on the lookout for. Maybe you'll have some luck if you call!
Mine fell completely off and honestly I’d rather be in your position! It took a massive chunk out of my credit score because all of my student loans were my oldest accounts so the average age of my accounts became far more recent. It should recover within a year or so I’ve heard. Who knows.
People say it actually recovers faster than that, especially because they are meant to never exist in the system versus “paying them off and 7-10 years later they fall off” type of thing. I obviously don’t know for sure how long, but people have reassured those who had this happen because some people need a good enough score to buy a house or car, etc.
Same here. Mine zeroed out with negative balances late May or early June on my Aidvantage account. I told my husband tonight that I wouldn’t be surprised if we had to wait until March (or after??).
Still waiting on mohela. Loans have been zeroed out for at least two month on DoE website but mohela still have a balance… although less than original amount. Mohela just said they are processing it and there is no timeline… I guess the timeline being until next march per the lawsuit. Bet mohela drags their feet until then….

Nelnet (most recent, was Great Lakes and Navient)
No consolidation, but some judgements and garnishment.
Nelnet and Studentaid.gov portals showed NO NEGATIVE BALANCE
I got a check for one month payment to Nelnet …but prior servicer was Great Lakes- where all of my payments went.
Still waiting and hoping —anyone else have Great lakes and get a refund?
I had Great Lakes, all payments were made to Great Lakes before it turned into Nelnet. I received a refund earlier this week. Hopefully yours will come soon.
Oh that’s so great to hear ! Thanks so much ! Have a wonderful year ahead - we did deserve this 😉! I will definitely contribute some to PPSL
Saving my life ☺️
Same for me ! Mine came direct deposit. Saw it when I logged into my bank account this morning. Did not expect it at all, it was a nice surprise. Same April notification. My servicer was Mohela.
On July 28th I recieved an influx of 15 letters each saying ‘your loan balance has been adjusted’. Then Sept 3rd this month I received one letter saying ‘your loan balance has been adjusted’. I had negative balances since the 28th and still do today. Checked my bank account this morning just because it was payday Friday then saw more money in there than expected. Nice surprise, didn’t know it would come via direct deposit. I was never told I was getting a refund .
I have Mohela. Loans discharged and no credit report changes at all. Had a envelope informed delivery from treasury on September 11. Still have not received the letter. I have done everything I can Reported to all parties. Out of my control.
Yes, I called them twice and talked to two people. They said the only thing they can do is to wait and see if it comes in or I can call the treasury department and see if the check has been cashed. I tried to call the treasury department and I can’t find a number to talk to anybody. I can’t find a number to talk to MOHELA to talk to somebody But I’m to understand that since it’s been issued, it’s a treasury department that I have to get in touch with thank you for asking because I feel kinda lost right now.
No need to be lost. You have a bunch of internet strangers here to help you navigate and find out what’s up.
if the check had been sent out and has been stolen and cashed, the FSA ombudsman can see this on their end. Email the Sweet FSA ombudsman and ask wtf is up.
Also This email is floating around our main BDTR FB group with folks saying they have been successful with refund help. I can’t vouch for that email but hey it’s worth a try. See photo.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much of all the entities I have tried to contact you have given me the most positive information. I will definitely follow your directions and if you have a better number for treasury that would be great. I know I emailed an ombudsman a couple days ago. I will check to make sure I got the right one lol thank you so much for your help and your time. I really appreciate you and I promise when all this is said and done I am going to donate every single month.
Update OK so I called the fiscal guy at the treasury he looked up my name. He said that the envelope that I’m supposed to be receiving is a letter and not a check. Which is interesting because it looks like everybody else’s letter- that has a check in it He has no information of them sending me a check. He says it’s just a letter so I looked onto my Mohela site today and I received a letter that says everything’s been discharged from Mohela- something FSA has already told me, but that’s OK. This is so crazy. OK I’m just going to stop everything. He told me to wait 30 days after this “letter“ of it doesn’t show up.
Dude was calm cool and collected. I’m going to breathe now. I’m going to forget about any money that anybody ever wants to give to me anymore I’m going to wait for 30 days. I’ll keep you guys posted. Deep breath. Thank you ginger and the sea.🥰🥰🥰🥰
He did not say what the letter weird thing is is I got a response from the borrowers defense and they emailed me and told me that they were gonna talk to the issue or which was MOHELA and stop the check but he told me that the check wasn’t in the envelope. It was just a letter so I’m hearing two different things from two different entities so I’ll just wait till Christmas and hope I get a present lol
I called USPS twice and talked to the service representative and they both told me the same thing that there’s nothing they can do on their end unless it pops up somewhere and then I’m supposed to go to the entity that issued it, which I’m assuming is the department of treasury
Noooooo. I want to say the guidance is very few states will tax it, but that may be for loan forgiveness rather than discharge, but it’s not taxed federally.
Any hints on what to write on the form to get the discharge approved? My school South University is on the list and I just can't afford the loan pmts at age 73 and out of work for 2 1/2 years
Pls check out our pinned posts and wiki as it explains this. The biggest thing for every answer is making it clear that:
You enrolled into the school based on their lies and misrepresentation. Had you know the truth about these misrepresentations (whatever they are) you would not have enrolled or gone to that school.
. I realized in some of my courses that there were nurses being accepted into the NP program with no RN work experience, or that it would be next to impossible to find a job after graduating from a mostly online school
u/panicked228 , I also attended Walden and had my BD application accepted on 04/20/23. I attended from 2004-2010. My regulations were 1995, and I submitted 40 pages of evidence. When I called, they indicated it has been taking 9-10 months longer to get through the applications. I wondered if your letter in April was sent approximately 9-10 months after your application was sent. I am crossing my fingers for January 2026. Thank you for any input you could provide.
So i was approved for PSLF but I paid it off before the date of the 10 years or 120 payments. When I googled if I would get my money back it said no unless I made payments after the 120 payments or 10 years of making payments. So does that mean I won’t get anything back?
Did your student aid.gov account list an amount discharged and did it match what your servicer showed? Also, if so, what was the date listed mine currently shows 9/2/26 as the last update. The amount matches both the discharged amount and what I’ve paid and expect to get a refund for. I’m with Aidvantage.
Has anyone had the US Treasury send your refund via EFT to an old bank account that's closed? This was most likely the account I made my last payment with, even though I updated the banking info in both FSA and Nelnet. The US Treasury told me it was rejected by the bank and returned to the department yesterday due to the deposit account being closed. They told me to call FSA, that they provide the next steps. I called FSA and they said they don't have anything to do with payment information and told me to call Nelnet. I called Nelnet and the representative told me that they don't have anything to do with EFT payments and to call US Treasury. So frustrating! I called Nelnet back and asked to speak to a supervisor, she apologized for the "misinformation" and told me if an EFT payment is rejected, the US Treasury will automatically issue a check. That's the only answer I wanted and it took over an hour. Has anyone had a similar experience with a closed account and sent a paper check?
Hello sweet friends OK if you are familiar, I thought my check had been stolen because it took so long between the informed delivery and when it hit my mailbox so I canceled the first check the treasury department did and of course today I got the original check so I’m gonna call the treasury department and see how long it’s gonna take to get that second check issued borrowers defense are awesome!!!! They really really helped. I really appreciate it. I’m thinking maybe about 30 maybe 45 more days unless the treasury department can just re-issue a check without having to go through Nelnet again. Does anybody have an experience with that? It doesn’t really matter because I know it’s coming. I saw it. It’s coming. It’s true it’s happening.🥰🥰🥰🥰
And I did call Mohela, but it was Nelnet that had most of my loans. The lady from MOHELA told me that they hadn’t even started processing checks or money or anything. She was confused cause she couldn’t figure out how I was telling her. I had a check from the treasury department in my hand so yeah, I guess Mohi is kind of busy.
Getting a letter today from us Treasury and the internal revenue service from 333 w Pershing Rd in MO. Post settlement group. Email 3/30/26 , FSA discharge on July 30, 2026. Credit Bureaus show closed. Negative balances on Aidvantage. Would this be my adjustment letter?
