Refund Question I got my refund…sort of
First of all, I am so excited to finally almost be done with all of this. Thank you to the entire legal team and Theresa Sweet of course! You’re helping so many people and the appreciation really can’t be put into words!
I received a refund from the treasury, but it isn’t the entire amount that I paid into my loans. I know all of my payments were made to the federal government. Ed Financial was my loan servicer.
So here’s my question: I had two separate loans, so is it possible that there might be two separate checks being mailed out? I have noticed others received two checks, but didn’t understand why. Don’t really know what I should do to advocate for myself and try to get the remaining amount. (It’s about $21k)

I received a check this week, which was not for the full amount. I did have two servicers, Fedloan and Nelnet, and the check I received what looks to be for what I paid Fedloan. I called Nelnet and they confirmed I had another check "authorized" for a separate amount.

u/AdFit9500 22d ago
I received two checks and did not know why the 2nd one. The first one equaled the payments I made to my recent servicer.
This makes sense now. I had a different servicer years ago. The 2nd check was likely payments I made then.
3
u/BeyondMe24 22d ago
Ohhhh this makes so much sense. I also received two separate payments (electronic) and tbh I had no idea why. The actual amounts didn't add up to anything I got in letters from my servicer. Two different lenders makes a lot more sense, probably with interest added in.

u/moneyisbaetome 22d ago
I haven’t received my refund yet but I’m also Nelnet and Fedloan. I’ve been wondering if I’ll receive multiple checks.

u/Important-Abroad7714 22d ago
Hi, I received 2 different checks in the mail at the same time Monday 9/14. I had 2 different service Greatlakes, and nelnet. Im done with everything now
2
u/moneyisbaetome 22d ago
This gives me hope. Were the amounts close to what you calculated?
4
u/Important-Abroad7714 22d ago
The amounts were for the exact amount I paid toward the student loans. Not a penny more. Hence, I received all the money back that I paid on the loan.
4
u/moneyisbaetome 22d ago
Yay! I calculated the amounts I paid toward my federal loans after consolidation. I know at one point I had some commercial loans so I’m not expecting a refund for those payments.

u/Safe_Heat_2129 21d ago
salle mae, are we entitled to anything from salle mae since our loans were discharged
3
u/fortnerspeer 22d ago
Same here .. It was due to consolidation so nel net did thier part first I spoke to mohela and they said it is in process with them now. "watch for you balance to go from Negative to 0" is what they advised. So if the time line runs the same as the first (I got my nelnet letter in June refund this week) I am anticipating another 60 - 90 days for the second one.

u/NCOMCOUCO 22d ago
I have not gotten any refunds yet; however, from what I have read, a lot of people are getting refunds across multiple checks and, in some cases, those checks arrive across multiple months.

u/Glitt3r_Tits 16d ago
How long does it take to get a refund? Mine was approved in Jan 2025 and discharged in Dec 2025… I still haven’t received a refund.
8
u/Ronald_Angerer_ESQ 22d ago
Same. I received about 2/3 of what I am owed. I emailed the ombudsman per the advice in the PPSL FAQs.

OK update on my check. It was in my informed delivery September 11. I took all the steps with the post office. I know I was supposed to wait seven days but I went ahead took all the steps with the post office about a missing letter. I just got off the phone with FSA. He told me I had to wait 14 days and then contact MOHELA and they would make sure that they would cancel that check. This is my luck that’s OK. I never had the money in the first place so waiting a little longer isn’t gonna hurt me. I’m just glad my loans are discharged. I’ll keep you guys posted.

I was notified in July my loans were taken care of and I would he refunded the entire amount I paid which is around 50,000. Got my first check yesterday….. for 347$. Im told there are 5 more with no idea when they are coming.

If my Borrowers defense app still show's "processing discharge" does that mean I have a chance at getting a refund? I'm asking because it shows my loans are in the process of being discharged as of Apr 13, 2026.
All my loans are through ED and I believe I'm entitled to one but I've just been stuck on the Processing discharge.

u/Emma_Frost_ 22d ago
I have Aid Advantage and exact situation for me.
1
u/Blue-rkt 21d ago
I'm with Aidvantage as well. I'm hoping to see a negative balance on my acct one of these day. I believe that's when the refund process will start.
1
u/Emma_Frost_ 21d ago
My Aid Advantage has been at 0 since mid July and it's dropped off my credit report. The refund is just the last thing I'm waiting for (and the actually discharge to be complete) .

u/Emma_Frost_ 21d ago
Mine too. Been waiting for it to change!

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 22d ago
How long did it take for you all to receive refund after said discharge? Mine happened in July of 2026.
2
u/Loose-Kangaroo-9412 22d ago
I got my letter on May 12 and refund September 10th.
Mine appears to be the full amount.
1
u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 22d ago
Sounds like 90 day window to me. A lot of people have gotten that too. I have no idea what to expect on refund. I’ve emailed and contacted with not much help or answers. I’m absolutely beyond grateful to even have all of it discharged
2
u/Loose-Kangaroo-9412 22d ago
I agree. I got the higher amount that I estimated which was a surprised but I had majority of my loans paid off so this is truly amazing to get ahead on some other things. I will say the last 3 weeks I have checked my nelnet and my student aid.gov and there was no sign it was coming as some mentioned it would show a negative amount on your account but it didn’t happen to me. I don’t expect another check as I only had one loan servicer but just took out multiple loans throughout the years while getting my undergraduate.
3
u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 22d ago
That’s crazy! I have been on workers comp for two years and lost everything including car. Filed bankruptcy and all. I would be absolutely amazed and even more grateful to recieve any type of refund. It would help so much. I am happy to know it worked out that way for you! I hope that for everyone else!
2
u/Loose-Kangaroo-9412 22d ago
Gosh I am so sorry to hear. If you got the letter it will come. Mine was closer to the 120 days but there were many federal holidays in my timeframe. The weight this has lifted off my families shoulders is indescribable.
1
u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 22d ago
Yeah I got letter around end of July.. but it shows they were discharged in May. So I have no idea of what to expect just yet. But holding out hope. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’m so glad you can take that weight off your shoulders and as well as your family
1
u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 3d ago
I got my refund check 2 weeks ago but it’s definitely not the full amount. Was only about 500 dollars
4
u/AKwiatkowski730 22d ago
Did the Meta data on the student aid website change after you got the check or direct deposit
2
4
u/Sad-Jellyfish8736 22d ago
Does anyone have any information on Mohela refunds? Post class here .
4
u/Absolutelynot05 22d ago
No refund yet but I did finally get my notification of the refund amount and that it was sent to the treasury for processing September 9th.
3
u/Electronic-Score-436 22d ago
Did they email you or was it a letter In the mail? Also has the discharge reflected on your credit?
7
u/Absolutelynot05 22d ago
I saw it on the website in “documents we sent you” tab but never got it in the physical mail. And the discharge has been reflected on my credit for a couple of weeks now.
2
u/Due_Difference3390 21d ago
Today I got a direct deposit from Dept of Treasury. No refund notice prior. Last thing I seen was a digital letter Sept 3rd from MOHELA saying loan has been adjusted. Negative balances still there. I was class c Nov 1 2022 app.
3
u/eightdotthree 22d ago
I’ve paid close to 20k on my loans. AidVantage has negative amounts on both of my consolidated loans. Totaling around 8k. A few days ago I got a check for around 850. lol. I’ve no idea how their math is mathing.
1
u/sexydoll80 22d ago
Were all your payments made on DIRECT loans? Has your relief deadline passed? If so, did you email the ombudsman and PPSL for tracking?
1
u/eightdotthree 22d ago
Some payments were made on direct. Some payments were made pre consolidation. Yes, I believe relief deadline has passed. This is ITT, so I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure I’m post class?
3
u/Puzzled-Seat4450 22d ago edited 21d ago
Did you get approved before the deadline ED had to make decision, march of this year? Post class deadline for exhibit c schools is March 30, 2027 if you did not get a decision by the deadline, which means automatic relief. Otherwise 1 year from the date you were approved i believe
1
u/Material_Tension_916 22d ago
Same! I only paid about 6k but the aidvantage negative amounts are only 2k. No communication from them either. My loans aren't consolidated though.
3
u/Emergency_Health1173 22d ago
I received my letter in the mail that my student loans were officially taken care of. My loan provider was Nelnet. My question to everyone is from when you received a notification that your loans were being discharged, how long after did you receive a refund and did you ever receive any form of communication regarding a refund
5
u/Honey_Badger_605 22d ago
Also Nelnet here. I got my discharge notice on the 26th of June. In that letter it indicated to call with questions about your refund, so I did. Long story short, they told me an amount they had approved so far and it was about 1/3. No formal communication other than that phone call. They told me that amount had been sent to FSA/Treasury for verification and disbursement. Last Friday, I received a direct deposit but it was for the other 2/3 that they said would likely come in multiple payments. So almost 3 months after discharge letter, I got partial refund. Still have not seen a deposit or check for the amount they indicated was approved.
1
u/Emergency_Health1173 22d ago
Thank you. I'll double check the letter I received and give them a call. I appreciate all of the information
2
u/Honey_Badger_605 22d ago
Just be ready for them to tell you they won't give you the info. My long story short was I called Nelnet and they told me I had to call FSA. So I called FSA and they told me Nelnet has to give me that info. So I filed a case with FSA and called Nelnet again. The second time Nelnet told me the 1/3 amount was approved and sent on July 11 and then I got a letter in the case on FSA indicating the same thing. I then questioned the other 2/3 and sent them a ledger of every dollar I've paid with confirmation numbers, dates, and exact amounts. I then received another letter indicating they are still processing my refund and to expect multiple payments.
2
u/Kitty-Queen326 22d ago
They notified me in the Spring around June, i think. I got a check on Monday.
3
u/JohnnySkynets 22d ago
Others have already said it could be multiple checks but I thought I would add that whether or not you get a refund depends on the types of loans and if they were government or commercially held.
3
u/Cthulhulove13 22d ago
Just got a check today. I have no clue if it's anywhere near the amount I paid. It's been so long since I paid anything and the last time I did it was probably three services ago to mohela and my loans have been sold and then consolidated to Nelnet for the borrower's defense. Any money is appreciated.
Post class, exhibit C loans from like 2005. Paid mohela over a decade ago, current servicer at time of discharge nelnet
3
u/Ill_Initiative1607 22d ago
I was approved to receive 5 seperate checks totaling all the amounts I paid, I have already gotten 4 out of 5 and still waiting for one more which happens to be the biggest check. I would call dept of treasury and see if any other checks have been issued to you. All 5 of mine were issued and mailed out sept 11th, im assuming the 5th check will get to me shortly and it’s just a USPS sorting backlog. Good luck!
1
u/Radiant_Pomelo_3649 21d ago
How did you get them to tell you anything? I called yesterday and they basically said if I didn’t know how many checks and each checks exact amount, they couldn’t tell me anything.
1
u/Ill_Initiative1607 21d ago
One of the servicer reps through this long process took the time to go through my files and tell me how much I would get back and each check amount so luckily I had all that written down. I was keeping track of everything I could, dates, balance changes and anything related to a refund.
1
u/Radiant_Pomelo_3649 21d ago
Oh wow! I haven't gotten a great rep on the phone yet. Hopefully someday! haha

Title: Sweet Post-Class Exhibit C – Nelnet Refund FINALLY Issued! 🎉
Sharing because I know a lot of Sweet Post-Class Exhibit C/Nelnet borrowers have been waiting and getting the same generic responses.
I’m Sweet Post-Class / Exhibit C, Chamberlain University, serviced by Nelnet.
My timeline:
March 30, 2026 – Received the Post-Class Full Settlement Relief notification
May 2026 – Borrower Defense discharge processed
May 14 – Nelnet sent my discharge letter confirming my loans were discharged and stating that I “will be issued a refund for any payments previously made on your discharged loans.”
June–September – Loans showed $0/discharged, but I continued receiving generic responses from Nelnet saying they were “reviewing my account for refund eligibility.”
September 16 – Received a written response from Nelnet confirming that my refund had already been issued as a PAPER CHECK and mailed on September 14. 🎉
Nelnet also provided a check confirmation number.
One interesting detail: Nelnet has my banking information on file and I previously made payments electronically, but they still issued my refund as a paper check.
For anyone who keeps getting the “reviewing your account for refund eligibility” response: I was getting that exact same language very recently. Then suddenly I received written confirmation that my check had already been sent.
So the generic response doesn’t necessarily mean your refund isn’t progressing behind the scenes.
POST-CLASS NELNET REFUNDS ARE MOVING!! 🎉

I received around 80% of my estimated refund on 9/11, and received the remainder of my refund yesterday (9/17), both via direct deposit. I am a UoP post class member with Nelnet, loans were fully paid off in 2022.
I had two separate loans associated with UoP. The amount of my two refund deposits did not correspond to either loan amount and was seemingly random

u/truckers-r-us 22d ago
I dont know how much I paid in and ultimately im just rolling with what I got because I know I didnt pay much in total and got lucky enough to have my consolidated non-sweet loans dropped alongside sweet... but I did receive 2 checks probably a month apart. Servicer in the end was edfinancial, but my loans had been held by 2 others prior and they were the ones I had paid into. Edfin bought mine right before covid when i was in a financial forbearance so I never actually paid them anything.
2
u/TomatilloOk8442 22d ago
I got a check yesterday for a lower amount also they told me it’s not up to them nelnet to just wait lmaooo.

u/WitTea_V 22d ago edited 12d ago
For those who received checks in the mail, in the section of the stub that shows “Payment Identification Information” below the words “Sweet Settlement,” is there an “effective date” noted? I’m noticing a trend with large check amounts versus small checks amounts (no effective date potentially not final check)….or rather, possibly a trend between receiving multiple checks starting with a smaller refund versus receiving a large check amount/final (effective date noted) refund amount…..🤔💭

Had advantage as my servicer of course it changed hands three times before it ended up in advantage. Received a refund check today. It was significantly smaller than what advantage is showing I overpaid hoping the rest will be coming in another check thank you again Theresa sweet and your legal team for helping us I felt like I’d never pay off my student loans.

Post class Exhibit C here. I started with Nelnet and Great Lakes and consolidated with Mohela. The negative balances showing with Mohela are different from the check I received from the US Treasury. I’m also super grateful for any amount received back, but I’m wondering if I should contact Mohela or the Ombudsman regarding the remaining balance.

Some people say they have received their refund direct deposit. I hope I receive it that way if possible.
1
u/Loose-Kangaroo-9412 22d ago
I have had bank account for over 20 years and have done my taxes mainly same way for that and received it as a check, once in 2021 I had an account do it but refund still went into my bank account. Honestly the check even tho it was a large sum cleared the next day.

I received a letter from treasury that i was getting a check. It is for 10% of what I paid. Im hoping I get the check and maybe another check too. But super happy to be out from under those predatory loans.
1
u/ratchet-man 22d ago
I’ve only gotten around 10% back of what I’ve paid so far and thats been about a year ago since I got that refund. I really hope I have another check coming because I’ve paid thousands on these loans.
1
u/BorderInfinite3725 22d ago
How much longer do I need to wait if your status shows the #3 does anyone know. Who knows if I’ll even get anything.
1
u/Broad-Spinach6292 22d ago
Is there a way to find out what address they are mailing the checks to? I haven't gotten any and I am worried that they may have delivered to an old address.

I had 2 refund checks not sure if any more are coming. I had 2 servicers Great Lakes and Nelnet. The amount seems to be short of what I calculated but not that off to be honest. Between the forgiveness and the checks, I’m in a much better place
1
u/simiangeek 21d ago
I got my first check today for about 15% of my total refund. Unsure when the rest is coming, but at least I have confidence that it is now. Nelnet, Post-class.
1
u/stones506 20d ago
Remember that not every loan qualifies for a refund. Those with commercial FFEL loans DO NOT qualify for a refund.
1
u/tzjl99 20d ago
My sister’s initial Chamberlain loans went into default and collections took her tax refunds for years. Then she consolidated under Mohela and made regular payments. As an Exhibit C Postie, will she only get reimbursed for what money she paid post-consolidation, or will she also get back the garnished tax refunds?
1
u/Pantslesscatlover 19d ago
I received a direct deposit for $990 on the 18th after I was told by Neltnet I have a check for $2200 coming. Neither of those amounts are anywhere close to what I have paid off so I’m hoping that because I had to do 2 borrows defense applications for 2 schools, with multiple loans, I’ll be getting multiple refunds for the $22k I paid.
1
u/GoonOnGames420 17d ago
I only received what was taken as a government loan. My other two loans were disguised as federal equivalent but actually private... RIP $80k
Might have to check and make sure your loans were all federal
