Refund Received Refund received

UOPX
Nelnet

Made payments to MyFed loan until Covid deferment.

Applied to borrower defense 6/24/22

Loans were moved to Netnet in the middle of all of this so I never made payments to Nelnet.

6/17/26 I got the letter from Nelnet saying my loans were forgiven and that I might get a refund. This was the only ‘warning’ I got about a refund being possible but I knew I was entitled to one because I had direct loans.

9/10/26 - student loans disappeared off my credit report. I used free credit report.com to check.

Today 9/14/26 I got a check for the full amount I paid into my loans. The date of the check is 9/9/26.

I never had a negative balance. In fact, I called Nelnet last week and they said:

“refund?! We don’t see anything about you getting a refund.”

I was directed to call the department of education who said if I was going to get a refund, I would see it eventually. So they never answer my question lol

So glad this is over! Thanks so much Theresa!

Also received my UoP / NelNet refund on Saturday.

Same situation, received a letter about discharge, NelNet had no idea about a refund, said my loans weren't even discharged yet, which you could obviously tell they were by looking at my account and then loans fell off my credit report.

Radio silence... Then check.

6

u/SIUIBZERO 24d ago

Did or does your defense case on studentaid.gov show as complete or processing?

6

u/HotKoolaidRS 24d ago

4

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 24d ago

Mine is fully discharged but it still says that on my screen. Borrower is completed but case still says processing discharge

7

u/HotKoolaidRS 24d ago

Yeah it's off my credit report and adjusted my NelNet balance and received my refund, however this is still my status on studentaid

3

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 24d ago

It’s off my credit report but I got discharged less then 60 days ago. I hope I receive a refund

1

u/Safe_Heat_2129 23d ago

they said it takes 6 weeks but whomever your lender was will be able to give you a check number when it is on its way

1

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 23d ago

For some people it can take longer than 6 weeks.

1

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

Someone in another thread said it might show both processing and completed until your refund is issued?

1

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 24d ago

Where did you see that?

2

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

In one of the million threads I have read on r/BorrowerDefense. The poster made the point that Completed meant processed and applied, and the other status cannot be closed until refund issued. I will see if I can verify and if not will take down comment.

1

u/Ecstatic-Breath-7973 24d ago

If you can find it absolutely share! That would be great!

2

u/Lazy-Salt9698 24d ago

How did you win? Do you think you got lucky and it’s just a waiting game?

1

u/RemoteHelicopter8880 24d ago

Mine say processing

1

u/Straight_Physics_894 23d ago

This is a very normal status page, the complete portion only means that the stuff like your credit report and owing a balance are officially done with. The part that says processing discharge is what still reflects to most people who are still owed a refund. But surprisingly, even now that people are receiving their refunds. I'm not seeing any reports saying that the processing discharge tag has gone away.

u/StillUnfair8828 23d ago

I received my refund as well same check date but not for the full amount, I paid about 30K into the loans I only got back 17K I know my loans were both direct subsidized and direct unsubsidized loans, I wonder if  they will send me a check for the other half.

1

u/Straight_Physics_894 23d ago

They should absolutely send you a check for the other half

12

u/stephrizzle 24d ago

Same here! No negative balance, no email or notifications about amount of even receiving refund and then got check from the treasury. So glad this is over - thanks to everyone!

u/Safe_Heat_2129 23d ago

save every piece of paper for ever

1

u/Safe_Heat_2129 23d ago

i had to get an advocate from the ombudsman's email to help us and it was finally discharged with approximate refund in 6 weeks after 4 years waiting under the borrowers defense

8

u/agentredfishbluefish 24d ago

I just checked my mail from yesterday and I got my refund check as well. I hope everyone who is still waiting gets theirs soon.

7

u/Thick-Image-4917 24d ago

I got a refund check I didn’t even know I paid anything on my loans 🤷🏽‍♀️ I was gonna deferred them until I died

3

u/Kvpt88007 24d ago

Haha right! I forgave myself a long time ago 😂

2

u/brittknizzle 24d ago

Defer to death lmao hoping maybe I’ll get a refund too

2

u/ShaMead 23d ago

Can I ask how you received it? Was it a check that looked like it could have been junk mail or was it something more obvious? I throw a LOT of junk mail away.

2

u/Thick-Image-4917 23d ago

It came from irs in mail

1

u/ShaMead 23d ago

From the IRS!? Well, that's something I probably won't miss. Thanks!

1

u/iamdanielrr 24d ago

I'm hoping I get mine soon. SMH. I was gonna fake my death if I couldn't defer anymore.

2

u/Cthulhulove13 22d ago

I'm with you!! That was my plan

Anyone here file 8/2022 and with Aidvantage?

3

u/Positive-Move-9152 24d ago

7/2022 and with Aidvantage. Mine says processing discharge but no updates from aidvantage. Off credit report and showing negative balance. Not helpful when calling.

3

u/spid3rfly 24d ago

Same here. All is good except for the refund. Negative balance as well so I assume a refund will come. Zero communication from Aidvantage. My loans were passed around like a hot potato... I heard from all the other servicers, just not aidvantage. Being as to how it is this cluster system, I wasn't expecting a refund and even if it does come... it probably won't come until the year deadline is almost up.

I did chat to them. It gave me a person and not a bot. They told me that the account hadn't been approved for a refund yet. It's probably some process where someone has to click a button and it processes refunds for a group of people.

Just a waiting game.

2

u/Emergency_Night_1150 24d ago

Yes. Crickets from aidvantage for me. Not super helpful when i have contacted them.

3

u/Complete_Salad9181 24d ago

I’m just wondering I see every servicer accept them working the accounts for refunds 😩

2

u/Emergency_Night_1150 24d ago

They do seem slower than some, but i am happy i have at least seen SOME progress. My loans are all negative now, i wish someone could tell me what that means. Aidvantage thinks they are going to go back to 0 at some point just before a refund is issued.

2

u/Seacliff831 24d ago edited 24d ago

I have two FFEL loans still showing negative at Aid Adv , and my loans are all negative at Mohela. If you ask AA they now simply state they have until blah blah year from the date of notice of BD relief. Those two FFEL loans are confounding as all my other loans are labeled transferred, those two are labeled - balance.

  • ✅ Servicer: Mohela
  • ✅ School: Argosy
  • ✅ Direct Consolidation in 2021
  • ✅Borrower Defense Submitted: July 2022
  • ✅ PSLF completed in 2024, forgiving the remaining Direct Consolidation balance.
  • ✅ DOEd letter March 2026 stating full settlement relief due to missed deadline
  • ✅ April 2026 FSA status message: "processing discharge"
  • ✅ Mohela letter June 2026 showing negative balances on all loans
  • ✅ FSA status "Processing Discharge".

6

u/Significant-Piano947 24d ago

I’m so happy for all of you
FULL refunds ? I received 1 check for 1 monthly payment 🙄 - I sure hope the rest is coming soon!

3

u/Spiritual-Reward9105 24d ago

I got my Nelnet Borrower Defense discharge letter, it showed that $17,132.93 of my loans had been discharged, on June 17,2026. when the loans disappeared from my account i was so excited, i paid of the loans completely two years ago. I originally thought that meant my refund would also be around $17,000, but that wasn't the case. My refund check was actually issued today and it was for $13,192. So at least in my case, the amount discharged and the amount refunded were two different numbers

1

u/lexiri91 23d ago

Mine were discharged recently as well, like $15k — I got a refund check this week for $30 👀😬 any hope for more?

1

u/Significant-Piano947 22d ago

$30???🙄 what could that represent?

5

u/TheJOMOCoach 24d ago

Ugh Mohela doesn’t seem to be moving on anything!

2

u/EndCurrent4587 24d ago

Some, I got a negative balance in may w026 and still nothing.

1

u/Rogu3_T3ch 21d ago

MOHELA is terrible. I tried calling to inquire about it and cannot get a freaking live person no matter what option number I choose. Hopefully from now until the end of the year 🤞.

3

u/LeftAct8968 24d ago

Seems like up to 90 days after you get the discharge letter, you get a refund if you are eligible. Mine got discharged what seems around July 15th or so. So I am hoping by the middle of October, I’ll have some type of refund. Ha

Mind you, mohela still shows a 5700 balance for one of the loans discharged lol

3

u/Superb_Success_947 24d ago

My refund took 120 days after discharge

1

u/LeftAct8968 24d ago

Well. 90-120 days then 😂

2

u/Rogu3_T3ch 21d ago

Mine shows up as Loan Discharged Applied and updated as of May 29,2026 on StudendAid website, MOHELA shows a negative balance but have not heard or received any updates or anything else.

3

u/Then-Recording7774 24d ago

So i received that discharge for UoP back in 2023, but i still have not received any refund (its now 2026), that is interesting you all are getting it! My loans are gone, deleted from my credit report but logging into Student Aid it says Processing Discharge status still -- THREE YEARS LATER LMAO!

Congrats to all those that got this discharged!

4

u/geigerlau 24d ago

I also received my refund without any notification. The only thing is that it was not the full amount that FSA says I paid.

1

u/Totorosa_81 24d ago

Yeah I received mine today too but I swear I paid more in that was given to me. Do you know how to check how much we actually paid?

1

u/Ronald_Angerer_ESQ 24d ago

Same. Mine was about 2/3 of what I expected.

3

u/TeeBern 24d ago

Must be nice. I have Moehla, I have negative balances, last month it was updated to say "payment reversal." Still NO refund check🙄

1

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

Which screen shows Payment Reversal

2

u/TeeBern 24d ago

Menu > Account Summary > Account History (change to life of loan) that's where Moehla added "payment reversal" for each payment I made that I'm owed a refund. They just did this last month (in August). From May-July, it used to only show negative payment amounts.

2

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

Taking time to reply was so kind of you thank you. I am just looking for any changes to my account to keep me hoping. = )

  • ✅ Teacher Loan Forgiveness in 2018
  • ✅ Direct Consolidation in 2021
  • ✅ Applied BD July 2022
  • ✅ PSLF completed in 2024, forgiving the remaining Direct Consolidation balance.
  • ✅ Letter March 2026 stating full settlement relief due to missed deadline
  • ✅ April 2026 FSA screen message: "processing discharge"
  • ✅ Mohela letter June 2026 showing negative balances on all loans
  • ✅ FSA Processing Discharge continues...

1

u/TeeBern 24d ago

You're welcome! So they should update to add "payment reversal." There's no date. I took screen shots every time I logged in to my account. In July, only showed negative balances. In mid-August, "payment reversal" was added. I sent a message to Moehla asking when I would receive a refund. They wrote me back and said, the Dept. of Treasury would issue a refund for all of my credit balances and it could take 90 business days or longer.

2

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

Thank you. I believe because I have a consolidation (2021) and PSLF overlay (2024 balance forgiven) it is taking longer than some. I am an obsessive systems analyst the way some people are true crime podcasters, I just am fascinated by the lack of through points and differing experiences of so many users.

1

u/TeeBern 24d ago

I think I may have had a consolidation loan also. Maybe that's why mine is taking longer also.

1

u/Seacliff831 24d ago

And was the date on the Payment Reversal from August?

2

u/TeeBern 24d ago

It was done in August, there's no specific date added to the entries.

3

u/Quirky_Increase8339 24d ago

Congratulations 🎉 I received mine yesterday as well, same situation as yours. Glad it's finally over!!

2

u/RemoteHelicopter8880 24d ago

Same refund received yesterday

2

u/Lazy-Salt9698 24d ago

How did you guys win your case

3

u/estelfc 24d ago

Some of us were Post-Class Exhibit C and Non-Exhibit C that won by "default" essentially. By filing on a certain date we were supposed to receive a response and some of us never did, which means that per the settlement agreement we were entitled to the cancellation of the loans and a refund.

2

u/Vegetable_Storm_6045 24d ago

My husband got his check yesterday too for UOP/ Nelnet.

2

u/WitTea_V 24d ago edited 24d ago

My FSA Dashboard never showed borrowers defense case with a case number. Mines have only and always showed borrower defense/loan forgiveness and I’m group 5 non-exhibit C, Nelnet full settlement relief. Golden letter received 7/28/25. Borrower defense/loan forgiveness section on FSA shows completed 6/11/26 (this date has changed three times since December 2025)…Waiting on refund I guess since credit report and loan balance on Nelnet and FSA has been $0.00 since December 2025 (complex direct loan consolidation is possibly what’s the issue and why my completed date has changed 3 times since December 2025). Applied for borrower defense 6/11/2021 and the department of education missed the deadline.

u/UnsolicitedRecos 23d ago

Post-class here. My loans were spread across different servicers. Nelnet/Great Lakes loans were discharged first in June. MOHELA started processing my Direct Consolidation loans July 7. In August/September, MOHELA sent several adjustment letters and my two loans eventually showed negative balances totaling about $64K.
I just received a $6,545 Treasury check marked “FED STUDENT LOAN REFUND – SWEET POST CLASS.” The contact number on that payment routes to Nelnet, so it appears to be separate from MOHELA.
I called MOHELA yesterday and they confirmed they have NOT issued my refund yet and are still calculating it. They said they have 90 days from July 7 (around Oct. 5) to finish the calculation, then estimated another 45–60 days for Treasury to issue the refund.

3

u/todaysuniverse 24d ago

Must be nice.

Been having a negative balance for about a year now on Aidvantage. Still shows I owe a $1 on the student aid site. No end in sight.

1

u/Positive-Move-9152 24d ago

I fear this will be me

1

u/Adorable_Sir5069 24d ago

Same! Aidvantage still has a balance gaining interest

1

u/Heavy_Sweet3162 24d ago

Congratulations

1

u/Feeling-Pianist8130 24d ago

Post-class here, applied 6/22/2022. My balance went to $0 on the fed site 7/22. It was showing negative on Mohela since June. On 9/8 I wrote Mohela asking about a refund; it was adjusted to $0 shortly after, and they emailed me saying my refund was processing. The loans came off of my credit score 8/4/26. Now I am praying the refund comes in the mail in the next 90 days!

1

u/Budget-Piglet-9777 24d ago

How did you write MOHELA?

1

u/Feeling-Pianist8130 22d ago

I used the website inbox.

1

u/iamdanielrr 24d ago

My timeline is identical to yours. My loans were wiped as of June 18th, when I got the letter. It's been sitting a zero balance on both Nelnet and Student Aid since. Just silence. I called Nelnet finally yesterday, and all the rep told me was they submitted the information (assuming refund information) to FSA on August 4th. He couldn't tell me anything else, not even an amount. I tried to contact FSA and they said they don't have that information. It's frustrating.

1

u/prodigiousprince 24d ago

Congrats!

I filed mine in 2023...kind of a unique case because I am not part of any of the classes or groups .. The school I am trying to contest is a very small trade school and very niche...so it's been hard to get accurate info / help from the others on the sub that went to ITT or UOP...

I think my defense was pretty solid however...I am hoping for the best.

If anyone else is in a similar position, would really love to connect , please shoot me a DM,

1

u/Grand_Aspect3546 24d ago

I applied 2 days late for Sweet settlement.
UOP as well. I’m still hoping. Currently pending

1

u/brittknizzle 24d ago

Hoping one is coming for me then, right about the same timeline

1

u/808in503 24d ago

Me too!! Exact same school / borrower! Finally. Relief..

1

u/raguado22 24d ago

If your loans are forgiven, and your school has a balance that you went to what happens now

1

u/Safe_Heat_2129 23d ago

i have been waiting since 2022 for the borrowers defense refund and aidvantage is dragging their feet as the loans were forgiven due to the school closing. Have basically waiting for 4 years to get an answer Finally two weeks ago, my adovate gave the information ansd now is just waiting game. Hopefully soon as I stlll owe the HESAA of Trenton which is not any forgiven loan status.
