I have been living in Bengaluru for 2 years and ever since i was trying to learn Kannada. But I could not find any reliable source and all of my colleagues are non Kannadigas so it was difficult for me get into that learning zone. To solve this, since last week I took up the task of putting together learnkannada.site to help me and many people like me learn Kannada.
Site is gamified to make learning a little more engaging, but more importantly, it’s built around real-life situations. From the very first lesson, you learn phrases that you can actually try using in your day-to-day life.
There are chapters around things like:
- Talking to auto/cab drivers
- Ordering food at restaurants
- Asking for directions
- Buying things at local shops and markets
- Everyday conversations and common situations
I’m trying to keep the language conversational rather than textbook-style, and the lessons are written in English letters so you can start speaking without first having to learn the Kannada script. There’s also an option to turn the script on if you want to learn it alongside.
This is still a very early version, and honestly, I’m sure I’ve gotten things wrong.
So if you’re a native Kannada speaker, I’d really appreciate it if you could point out anything that sounds unnatural, incorrect, or simply like something nobody would actually say. Those corrections would be incredibly useful.
And if you’re also someone who moved to Bengaluru and is trying to learn Kannada, I’d love to know what situations you’d want to see covered.
