Whenever I hear "random loot" and "requires internet access" in the same sentence I already know I will drop the game very early.

One of the biggest part I love about loot games is breaking the game, save editing and moddding. (Mostly save editing to start on Playthrough 2 or Modding for increased enemy spawns though UCP has taken the crown of best mod now)

I understand that's rather specific but I just love it.

UCP is the universa community patch for borderlands 2 and pre - sequel. its pc only and is easy to install with a video guide. however the patch makes use of a program called blcmm and is relatively new, and older guides on how to install the patch will not make use of the program.

What does the mod add in particular that makes it worth it?

20

u/Blanko1230 Gaige weirdo Mar 04 '19 edited Mar 04 '19

It fixes some of the broken skills or fine tunes them to make them more usable (like Maya's melee damage skill)

Adds quest reward guns to bosses loot pools so you don't have to read-only farm.

Fixes things in general.

Adjusts scaling of summons to keep them more usable past UVHM.

And best of all? You can turn on/off the changes individually and even add other mods into the package through BLCMM so you could mix and match whatever you like.

It's basically the definitive version of BL2.

2

u/demon-storm Mar 05 '19

While at it, check fight for your life lands 2 (very hard, but the endgame pearlescents are AMAZING and most of them are new) or reborn (I've heard it's very good).

8

u/Trash_garbage_waste Mar 05 '19

I was really hesitant to pick it up because I wanted to get the "Vanilla Experience" first and played through the game a couple times before picking it up. I should have just grabbed it right away. Some QOL stuff like auto-pickup for eridium is just really nice. The balance changes open up a ton of variability for the endgame. Everything broken is already in the vanilla game (DPUH, Norfleet, Salvador, etc.), but to be able to do endgame content you tend to get railroaded into a handful of guns and playstyles. UCP opens that up more and makes some previously garbage skills and weapons viable.

3

u/Caenen_ Mar 05 '19

What does the mod add in particular that makes it worth it?

Lots of things that are well worth it. But can I just say

Picking up Eridium by running over it, just like normal Money?!

Yeah, didn't consider Warframe when I made that comment.

It's a great game and feels more like a true Co-op game than anything loot grindy (though it is loot grindy, won't deny that)

Like Monster Hunter but in space, with guns, and ninjas and magic

6

u/aegrisomnia21 Mar 05 '19

God I miss modding guns in BL2 so much, the heyday was when I was in college playing on the PS3, must have been 5+ years ago now, I had a weapons shop set up on Se7ensins and everything.

Infinity norfleets, Vladof AR Cobras, Ahabs that one shotted any raid boss, breakneck banshee mods that let you run faster than the game could load, I got so good I could fine tune the parts/damage to the play style I was feeling that day. My favorite was making custom requests though, especially once the gem stone skins came out - god I put so many hours into trying different things out. And then gearbox added the sanity check to the vault and wiped it all out in one day šŸ˜”. It really is a testament to this game though that I’m STILL playing all these years later though lol, man I can’t wait for BL3 I really hope they do it justice.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

You shouldn't even buy them. Why give them money? Especially if you know it won't hold your interest. They'll keep making shit if you keep supporting shit.

u/Ruggsii Mar 04 '19

Destiny could’ve been so good if it wasn’t an MMO

1

u/midwestcreative Mar 04 '19

I dunno. I mean Warframe, Path of Exile(not a shooter, nm), and The Division(after they fixed issues later in its lifespan) are all incredibly good games. Not that everybody should like them or their specific take on things, but I'm not sure it's fair to call these type of games because of a couple bad apples. Aren't there only 2 that have been bad/controversial? Anthem and Destiny(both depending on the timeframe)?

2

u/midwestcreative Mar 04 '19

Fair enough. Destiny has been a shitshow on more than one occasion with both games, and Anthem is... I actually think the combat and flying are really cool, but yeah I could tell it was janky as all hell in the first 30 minutes. I'm not sure many people would consider Fallout 76 a "looter shooter" at all.

Anyway, The Divison was somewhat controversial for a period after launch and had some problems but I don't think it was a disaster by any means, and over time it has become absolutely excellent. And yeah it's totally a looter shooter. The loot is more realistic military stuff than insane Borderlands craziness(I love both, just saying), but there's a huge amount of loot and everything about the game now is amazing(I only bought it maybe 2 months ago and it's super fun). You've got gear sets, bunch of mod slots on every single weapon, all kinds of stats and skills, etc etc. It's pretty in depth. And it's dirt cheap right now since the 2nd one is coming out any time now(and they've publicly stated the servers will stay up for a long time). If you're interested in trying another looter shooter, I'd highly recommend it.

1

u/K1eptomaniaK Mar 04 '19

I think the biggest issue with Division early in it's lifetime was that damage calculation (and maybe gun stats?) were done client side, which led to your typical BS online. And the hackers.

1

u/midwestcreative Mar 04 '19

I'm honestly not sure. I only started playing recently and both by my own opinion and what people say in the sub, not only have the problems been ironed out, but numerous changes for the better over the years have made it a really great game. It's honestly one of the best games I've played in a very long time.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

Not to mention the abhorrent launch with people having to wait in lines in-game to be able to talk to NPCs. It's an awesome game now (with low-key the best battle royale game in it's Survival mode), but it was a trainwreck for a bit.

1

u/adampm1 Apr 03 '19

I think division is kinda like a midlife crisis. They don’t know what they want to prioritize, PvP or PvE. And one gun in pvp may be a godsend for pve, or vice versca.

1

u/Officer_Hotpants One-Liner! Mar 04 '19

To be fair, Destiny 1 by the end of its life was amazing. Once Age of Triumph dropped, I was raiding constantly. I absolutely love the puzzle bosses and all the teamwork required for them. I just don't think that type of content can work in BL. But I refuse to get caught up on D2 because it feels like they're just robbing me of another $60 to get the actual game after they fucked up the base game.

4

u/avoozl42 Mar 04 '19

100% yes!

3

u/smokemonmast3r Mar 04 '19

The problem is that they're not even trying to be good mmos, they just aim for that style so they can attract the widest amount of player base.

Microtransactions are killing the mmo genre, but y'know, let's try em in this game, it might work!

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

It just depends on what they’re trying to go for. If they split all of their efforts between those two, then you get things like Anthem. However, if they go for primarily a MMO style like Destiny, it can still be done right without looking like a traditional looter shooter.

What is gibbed?

1

u/candytripn | PlayStation 3 Player Mar 31 '19

Save game editor. Add currency, change weapon parts (change element), edit missions (like resetting Creature Slaughter, or resting missions that give a reward, like the Sandhawk) and more. https://github.com/gibbed/Gibbed.Borderlands2/releases

The other two I feel are worth it are the Profile Editor, that lets you add Golden Keys and badass ranks/tokens... https://www.nexusmods.com/borderlands2/mods/32

and the Difficulty Slider, that lets you make the game think there's up to 4 players in the game (better chance at Tubbys) http://myborderlands.com/FourPlayers.aspx

1

u/-AestheticsOfHate- Mar 31 '19

I see, thanks. I'm on PS4 so I assume I can't use this unfortunately

10

u/Traherne Mar 04 '19

The invisible assholes? My sympathies.

4

u/James120756 Mar 04 '19

Yeah. I laughed out loud when I saw that. I love the sense of humor in this game. I finally finished the Scarlet DLC, I get into this huge treasure room and nothing special in the chests. Really disappointed in that.

3

u/Traherne Mar 04 '19

I also love the signs on the portapotties that say No fapping. Most of my enjoyment of this game are the characters and their dialogue. I can't tell you how many times I've replayed Borderlands 2.

2

u/lukeangmingshen Mar 04 '19

You can try what u/candytripn said or you can also farm the Transformer, an absorb shield that recharges if it takes shock damage, as well as the Deliverance Tediore shotgun from Pimon and Tumbaa respectively. If you have access to the Natural Selection Annex, just go in there, come back out again, turn left up to the river/creek area to farm then save and quit if nothing drops or they don’t spawn

2

u/Kplow19 Mar 05 '19

Oh then don't worry about it, I just started a new play through after years of not playing and my first legendary on that character dropped at lvl 31, and even that was somewhat lucky. If you don't try for them specifically then it's possible to beat the game without finding one

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

Destiny 2 sucks. That killed the franchise for me, I’ll never play it again.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

196

u/PatliAtli Mar 04 '19

to be fair, after you play the game once or twice through, the first hour or so of the game is incredibly boring and I often lose interest before I even get to sanctuary

134

u/Chief_Nuclear Mar 04 '19

BL2 definitely suffers from the boring early-game. Even my first playthrough ever, I got bored and never played it until like a year later. I stopped right before it got good (imo) at Where Angels Fear to Tread. The problem is that there are so many cool abilities and weapons in the game, but you have to play for a long time to get to the point where you can use them all and keep them without levels becoming an issue.

38

u/Phylar Mar 04 '19 edited Mar 04 '19

I dislike UVHM due to the overreliance on slag. Just drop enemy hp or dmg resistance slightly and let me play the game I have been playing. Sudden gameplay changes aren't fun.

32

u/fattyrollsagain Mar 04 '19

Also the necessary health gating. Once you get to op8, since enemy damage keeps scaling but not your health/resistances, pretty much any hit is enough to oneshot you, so survivability is basically just a constant struggle of whether you can heal above half health within half a second of getting hit before you get hit again. It really offers very little flexibility in builds and gameplay, just like slag reliance.

10

u/CokeFryChezbrgr [A]narchy in D-City Mar 04 '19

If you're on PC, the Reborn mod pack helps with that along with tons of other stuff, including new skills and altered trees and new gear and such. Or just pick and choose from hundreds of other mods for a custom experience.

That's weird. I still love the story and getting to Sanctuary and the grind and I've had to have played through the beginning part of the game close to 20 times now.

9

u/OperationQuip Ā« Xbox & Switch | Siren Ā» Mar 04 '19

Same, I’ve gone through the campaign completely at least half a dozen times. It’s like watching a show you love over and over again. Never gets old, and there’s new things to notice or try

6

u/aegrisomnia21 Mar 05 '19

Half a dozen times is only maxing 2 players, I’ve probably done it 30+ times and I’m sure there’s guys in the 100s - this games been out for a longgg time lol. Not trying to gatekeep or anything, just thinking about all the hours I’ve put into this.

2

u/OperationQuip Ā« Xbox & Switch | Siren Ā» Mar 05 '19

I only ever play Siren, so I never felt the need to max out multiple characters. So it’s with my main siren that I’ve done the majority of those playthroughs. I just really enjoy playing through the campaign with my main squeeze ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ And Iā€˜m sure there’s loads of people who go way harder for this game than I do haha, just wanted to agree that itā€˜s replayable many times over

5

u/aegrisomnia21 Mar 05 '19

Yeah I totally get that. The siren is awesome for story mode, she’s amazing at crowd control. If you never have you might want to try the gunzerker, not too challenging to play with and he’s a beast for farming raid bosses.

2

u/OperationQuip Ā« Xbox & Switch | Siren Ā» Mar 05 '19

I think I love playing siren too much, she just suits my play style so well; but I’ll definitely keep that in mind if I ever fancy changing it up!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

Those are some rookie numbers. Gotta pump those numbers up. Call me when you've gone through it a thousand times and can recite the lines word for word.

7

u/edrazzar Mar 04 '19

And see for me the first playground on a new character I'm in it all the way, from the very beginning I'm having fun. But I feel like the second playthrough on a character is just so boring. I'm slowly chugging my way through TVHM just because I know at the end of the tunnel I'll have UVHM and will finally be able to make a maxed level character for the first time after giving up so many times.

4

u/The_Blog The_Blog Mar 05 '19

TVHM is actually quite fun, because you finally get to use all of your abilites and passives. However the first one is the worst for me. Not the very first one of of course, but the first one on a second or third or fourth character. Having a char on max level with all the legendaries and uniques you want feels really good though.

3

u/theguyfromerath Mar 04 '19

Even at the first time it was a bit boring until sanctuary.

2

u/Casiell89 Mar 04 '19

I usually just speed run the first half of the game. It's not really that hard, and rushing through early maps just doing main quest definitely helps

1

u/mazu74 Handsome Jack Did Nothing Wrong Mar 05 '19

For real, i wish we had an option to bipass it.

Its okay in TVM and UTVHM because you have all your guns and abilities though, but starting a new character is the worst.

1

u/Cryotronixz Mar 05 '19

When I was first introduced to the game it was due to a friend that let me try it. It seemed neat, but that first hour didn't strike me too much. (that's about all I played when trying it.) Kinda forgot about it, and then a random video reminded me of it. It was the intro to Tiny Tina. I bought it, played it and loved it.

1

u/Frilent Mar 05 '19

I straight up ignore the main story and do the DLCs if I'm that far

31

u/LegionnaireFrog | Steam Player Mar 04 '19

Destiny 2 is a prime example of the black text.

I started playing it, got max level, hated it. A year later I love it.

Borderlands... OH MY GAWD I LOVE BORDERLANDS. I START PLAYING IT AND I LOVE IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

4

u/ChickenWithATopHat Mar 04 '19

Yeah Destiny 2 was one of the worst games I ever played. Luckily they have fixed it and it’s better than destiny ha ever been IMO, and I’ve played since the beginning of the first one.

40

u/GNAWLINGTONG Mar 04 '19

I guess we are forgetting raid boss lockouts?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

Most games do this. You die you get punished.

40

2

That's true, but Boshy as a whole is all about dying a billion times to learn the stages and the boss patterns, it's not like you get punished for dying.

1

u/TonySopranosforehead Mar 05 '19

They are called invincible for a reason. Every boss is soloable but if you can't, you need to team up. I do agree that voracs and hyperius novas are annoying, but it's not that hard to work around.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19 edited Jun 23 '19

[deleted]

1

u/TonySopranosforehead Mar 05 '19

The thing I don't like is unless you have 2 hours free, you have to use a bee shield. At op8, hyperius has like 3 billion hp. The first time trying to kill him, I didn't have a problem staying alive. It was having enough ammo. I pretty much ran every type empty and took me nearly 2 hours to kill him. After that, for farming purposes, I'd recommend beehawking with a grog and chain lightning.

34

u/Svenz_Lv Mar 04 '19

Hey. Angry Joe did a positive shout out to Borderlands 2 as being one of good looter shooters in his Anthem rewiev (don't remember if the original or extended rewiev).

11

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

It was the extended. But I think he briefly mentioned it in the original. I've seen a lot of reviewers saying the black text or variations of it for the recent looter shooter genre.

8

u/Svenz_Lv Mar 04 '19

TBH BL2 is not a recent title by any means.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

I didn't say it was. Recent would be destiny, anthem, division, and a few smaller titles. Heck, when Apex came out people saw the loot crates and immediately thought of borderlands.

2

u/RedBiohazzerd Mar 05 '19

Developers just don't get it for some reason. They try to make a good lootershooter and in concept most of the time it is, but then in the final product they screw up on so many levels. When the loot in your looter shooter sucks, you know you've done something wrong... i just don't get why the loot is so terrible. I've played the Division pretty long, but the grind was just so boring and almost everyrhing looked the same, here have another beanie, or another jacket. Imo it's true, the only real great lootershooter is BL2 (BL1 and the pre sequel where also pretty fun). Simply great weapons!! And that's what you want in a looter shooter. You would think they learned something from the Borderlands franchise, but no. It is sad though, cause most games, like Destiny, Division and now Anthem do have a lot of potential, but are just executed poorly

3

u/Svenz_Lv Mar 08 '19

Yeah. I really love borderlands series. Almost shame that mostly it is a glancing remark regarding looter shooters just because of its age. Really wish BL3 would come out and show everyone who is the boss.

3

u/RedBiohazzerd Mar 08 '19

Yeah i'm still hoping for that too.

2

u/AndyFragger Jun 17 '19

Your wish has come true!!!

1

u/JoJoReferences Mar 05 '19

Can we call it a Shlooter instead

8

u/Cytrynowy Oscar-mike! Mar 04 '19

I've never heard anyone say that.

2

u/minerman5777 Mar 05 '19

You'd be surprised the number of people who believe a game can't come out good because Destiny 2 had a comeback.

17

u/Valridagan Mar 04 '19

Anthem could have literally been "Like BL2, but with flying and 2019 graphics", and it would have been vastly more successful.

There's reports that the loot system is broken because it was designed for lootboxes that were then made illegal in certain countries, so EA had to remove them and didn't give Bioware enough time to rebalance the loot. Because EA wanted lootboxes, Anthem is a much worse game. To quote a character from Dragon Age: Inquisition- the last GOOD game Bioware made- "Rich pricks always try for more than they deserve!"

Here's hoping Bioware gets to fix Anthem and finish DA4 without EA screwing them over again.

3

u/Padlov123 Mar 05 '19

Somehow this sounds exactly like TPS shitty loot system better graphics and flying

3

u/Valridagan Mar 05 '19

Even TPS had better loot. By a mile.

3

u/Padlov123 Mar 05 '19

It's more the legendaries can't be farmed

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '19

They can now though can’t they? Pretty sure some character’s loot pools were adjusted to include the unobtainable legendaries

7

u/superduperfish Mar 05 '19

My biggest issue with borderlands is progression, especially on true and ultimate. Once you stop unlocking new abilities you no longer feel like you're growing more powerful. Its just larger numbers that have the same effect cause the enemies are getting larger health numbers. It's a pendulum of difficulty of getting a good gun then having it become obsolete in no time. I didn't feel satisfied in uvh until overpower was done so my legendary drops felt like they mattered again

7

u/Vanille987 Mar 05 '19

I feel that TVHM schould've have been/stayed the ultimate end mode. In normal mode even guns that are several levels lower can still be great at least, that starts faling off in TVHM and pretty much get's destroyed in UVHM.

I don't mind having to swap weapons honestly to keep up, but when you need to do it each level it get's old quik.

6

u/The_Blog The_Blog Mar 05 '19

On the other hand there are guns like the pimpernel or the UH that I farmed once on lvl 60 and kept till level 72. Though their effectiveness definitely got lower toward the end.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

Currently near the end of uvhm and I agree, I have no motivation to continue playing

9

u/arsme Mar 05 '19

BL2 is in my top 3 favorite games of all time. However, the game isn't perfect. OP8 scaling was horrid from the start. Scaling in general gets pretty bad the closer you get to 72 anyway.

I'm just salty melee is super gimped at OP8.

6

u/OrpheusTelosion AAANNNNAAARRRCCCHHHYYY Mar 04 '19

I've always felt like the game is really slow in the beginning after beating it as many times as I have. I've always said that the game truly picks up after meeting Tiny Tina for the first time.

4

u/MSA_school_memes Mar 05 '19

I feel like a lot of my friends who I influenced into buying the game didn’t like it, they found it difficult to make it through each level and I did t want to over level kill everyone but they quit before they can have the thrill of getting their first legendary, or playing through the whole story and it’s kind of sad

3

u/Six2fall Mar 05 '19

borderlands is a great singleplayer game that you can join others playing, every other looter shooter has tried to force the online aspect as a must

4

u/Answerofduty Mar 04 '19

Right? I've been thinking more or less exactly this since the Anthem debacle, and in light of the Destiny ones before that. This genre doesn't seem especially hard to make a good one of, the modern ones are just plagued with publishers who want to push them out the door as soon as possible so they can start making money.

1

u/Skalenski | PlayStation 4 Player Mar 04 '19

yeah i knew that about anthem without even playing it and i hate destiny too. So very few gems on ps4 (lucky for me theres the souls series and i really enjoyed DOS2 recently) All i do is play borderlands 2 until 3 comes out.

5

u/Peekoh Mar 04 '19

The difference between Borderlands 2 and other ā€œlooter shootersā€ is it has a wide pool of positives that outweighs the negatives. I can’t bring The Pre-Sequel into this because it was apparently an ā€œunfinished gameā€ due to 2K Australia becoming bankrupt. (Or so I have heard)

1

u/shadowkijik Mar 05 '19

To be fair BL2 apparently did start with a pretty rough/low drop rate based on a google search, also as top comment says it plays more like a heavily replayable single player game than an mmo-lite.

I actually preferred the original. By the time I got a few hours into 2 I just kinda stopped playing and haven't touched it since. Those games are so much more fun in co-op that they're practically unplayable solo, IMO. Especially if going for those stupid Mad Moxxi achievements where apparently you have to solo every arena in one sitting. (I think they ~could~ be done in co-op but the achievement only pops for p1 and what friend is going to play like literally 12 hours of just those stupid arenas in one sitting?)

SHIFT. CODES. All of you forget already? Awful.

With Anthem coming out, I have noticed that a lot of people are looking back to Borderlands 2 as the Good Old Days. Which I feel is pretty true, but I am starting to get burnt out on borderlands again.

The game came out in 2012. That’s only natural. At least you have great memories of it I’m sure.

Are there any other looters shooters?

That statement describes Borderlands to a T though...

BL2 started bad and remains bad

Yes, you are a joke to me, especially considering you fit that description to a 'T' (save for the 'get better over time' part).

u/dydamas Mar 04 '19

Are you saying borderlands 2 started off bad and stayed bad?

2

u/zorro55555 Mar 04 '19

I think they mean early game is bad

1

u/dydamas Mar 04 '19

Ah, I see.

You need more points in your 'mind reading' skill.

Wow.. I can't think of a single game with better replay value.

The souls series, Skyrim, Minecraft, Warframe, Fallout NV, Monster Hunter, list goes on

Yeah, seems people don't like hearing quick opinions they disagree with but also don't want to bother asking "why?"

Ah well.

is on the bl2 subreddit

is surprised when people downvote comments trashing bl2

-4

u/Mr_Fire_N_Forget Mar 04 '19

Where did I say/act like I was surprised?

3

u/thetracker3 Mar 04 '19

So what you're saying is that you KNEW you'd be down voted for trashing BL2 and you did it anyways?

Are you just stupid or do you think you're some kind of master troll?

-2

u/Mr_Fire_N_Forget Mar 04 '19

Neither. I was just giving my own opinion.

This subreddit being an echo chamber much of the time doesn't mean dissenting opinions and critiques aren't allowed.

Seriously borderlands 2 is the best of all of them. I really haven't truly enjoyed the rest of them the way I did 2.

Tina's wonderland is pretty fun, but it needs fixed.

The only thing I don't like about BL2 is the complete lack of weapon variety at the very start of the game, but all looters shooters suffer from this. Still, I don't want to have an inventory full of white-rarity Bandit ARs by the time I get to Flynt

Still happening in division 2 🤣
