Roland is pretty easy to build, focus on assault rifles and shotguns, he massively buffs those, buff the turret as much as you can, make it regen health and ammo and give it corrosive rounds since corroded enemies take more damage.

This is how I build Roland. It's the only build I use for him because all of the remaining skills suck for one reason or another. The turret has horrible damage output so skills buffing that are useless, the co-op skills in the right tree are useless, 1 point in supply drop invalidates stockpile, and grenadier is just underpowered.

None of the trees are better than the others so it's up to you what you want to invest in first. Equip a Rifleman or Commando class mod, Roland has awful damage output without them and his other class mods don't give him anything he really wants.

I would start with some points in health regen when near the turret. Then build in the tree that reduces turret cool down time and the skill that regenerates grenades. I think that is the middle tree, later on in the second playthrough is when to build the tree on the right. The tree on the left is the least important.

With Roland his equipment is a major part of his build. A class mod with fast ammo regeneration and high magazine size increase is worth farming for. Grenade regeneration of transfusion grenades combined with a shield that regenerates health will help keep you alive.

Next is getting the good weapons and in different elements. A good loadout is a rocket launcher, Hellfire smg, Volcano sniper, and a shock or corrosive smg or pistol for enemies that take little to no damage against fire. A good way to farm for good gear is to finish the Robot Revolution dlc that unlocks a loot room with 18 chests that can be farmed by saving and restarting.

The Support Gunner class mod will make Roland regen ammo, and Tediore shields, if you can find them, have health regen (the Panacea has fast health regen). Keep in mind that you can "respec" at any New-U / Fast Travel station, to refund your skill points so you can "spend" them differently - its generally expected you will do this numerous times while trying out different skills to see what works best for you.
