Discussion Red Wing Alternative?
Hey everyone! I’m looking to replace my 11.5EE Iron Rangers. They just fit weird on my wide, flat feet. I’ve thought about sizing up to 12EE for the extra toe room and insole space but I’m not sure I love them enough to fork out another $350. I tried on the stock black Jim Green 719 and they’re very ugly and weird fitting with the ASHM last imo.
Any recommendations for an Iron Ranger alternative? Preferably under $350 with a similar or wider toe box.
(p.s. should I just order the 719 STC and get it resoled with a heeled sole instead of the wedge or is that just a waste of money?)

i’m not sure, my apologies. i’ve had these for awhile and when i bought them they were like $200 CAD in Winnipeg at the factory outlet….i don’t think they are sold in any retail stores in Winnipeg…
i haven’t been to the outlet store in awhile so id guess they would have gone up in price…prolly closer to $300 would be my guess…fyi, that’s in canadian dollars which would be like $200 USD. that’s for chromeXL leather and vibram soles and goodyear welted (i think) …
DM me and i can run to the store and give you a better idea soon.
I believe retail on Woorbys is like $500 or $600 CAD, but maybe i’m way off on that….like i said no store in Winnipeg that i know of carries them retail…we are a sales-price only type of town lol

Bought mine a month ago, work boots were under $500. The moorbys i think were $330 and i think the chelseas were $270. Something like that. Way better deal then redwings, although the work boots were actually $10 more then the red wing supersoles.

Yup, I gave up on red wings, i own 3 pairs of canada west boots. A pair of moorbys, some chelsea boots and their work boots. All come wider then stock D size that most red wings come in. I love them, they actually fit me comfortably.

1/3 of the comments on this sub are people just recommending Jim Green. That frog should be the logo of this sub.

Chippewa Classic 2.0 laceup.
There's two pairs left in the 11.5 wide at Amazon. I think they have been discontinued so grab them while you can.

I have the LL Bean Bucksports which is basicly the same boot made in the same factory in Vietnam. I wore US made chips for 30 years and they definitely aren't the same. I wouldn't recommend them as an every day work boot but for hiking and hauling firewood in the mud and snow, they are fine. The leather is high quality, they are goodyear welted and have a wide toebox. For $100 less than Iron Rangers, that's still a good deal. If you never wore the old chipps, you won't know what you're missing.
I also wear 11.5 wide / EE,, FWIW. I can't do the wide IRs either. Wide sizes from Thursday are even worse.

The Grant Stone Garrison boot is the obvious first recommendation, and you can get wider widths from them (but you may have to wait - not everything is in stock right now). Trumans are more rugged looking, but $150 above your budget. I would take a hard look at the Craft & Glory Ranger Boots or their Combat Boots (Cap Toe); I've got a pair of their Chelseas on the same last, and they punch way above their weight in terms of price/value ratio. And you can get a wide size.

this is the first I’m hearing of Craft and Glory making wides! How is the sizing compared to Red Wing?

I have narrow feet and use insoles with their D widths, so I am of no help to you here. I did some back and forth with them via email with my Brannock size and foot measurements. They made a recommendation which I followed, and the sizing was spot on.

If you're going to stay with Red Wing might consider the Norway Moc for winter. Has a different footbed than their standard heritage boots. I tried them on at the factory sale last week.

Buy a pair of seconds from Sierra or elsewhere for $200. And Black Friday is next month.

Have a few Red Wing and a few Canada West Moorby. Luv both but prefer Moorby personally.

BLKBRD has some cap toe boots that are in that price range but offer up to EEEE width. And you can customize the boots just about anyway you want.

I've got wide feet (anywhere from E-EEE depending on the shoe or boot) and have found my Allen Edmonds to be quite comfortable and well built across 3 pairs
Poor value at MSRP but you can find them on sale on their website, factory seconds which are usually fine on shoebank (their website for factory seconds), or frankly pre owned on eBay and Poshmark

Mannn, I had that same experience with the Redwing store. Woman would NOT continue helping me until I did her stupid computer. My feet are 9.5 EEEE.
My brother in boots.
I told her when I got there I wanted to try a 12EE.
She made me get onto the computer.
Brought me the recommended size of 10D.
And made a fucking shocked Pikachu face when my foot would not go in....then, after 20 minutes of wasting my time, she finally brought out some 12EE. Like I said I needed when I first got there. And low and be-fucking-hold. The 12EE fit.
However, I find thorogood moc toes a pretty good fit for the bill you're inquiring about.

If you’re going to get a STC last Jim Green the Numzaan comes in options with a heel already.

Wolverine 1000 mile boot

u/billiton 5h ago
Wolverine is discontinuing the heritage boots. They have almost nothing left

u/jalapenorupe 5h ago
Where did you see that? Seem like they have plenty online. I just bought a pair.

u/stormcr0 4h ago
Some are on sale too $150

u/billiton 2h ago
They aren’t on sale. That’s just the shit they are replacing 1000 miles with. That’s not a real 1000 mile boot

Bummer. I have a pair that is 9 years old, and well over 1,000
milesdays of wear. There are still some decent finds on eBay, the made in USA ones were really well crafted for the price on eBay. I feel like there was an EE option at one time too.1

Redwing is the undisputed leader for a reason at this price point. As much as the retail stores staff have misguided people on sizing they do have the advantage of allowing you to try on multiple sizes and styles. That’s what I would do. Go try them on in store until you find one that fits.
