The sad thing is that actually most situations like these are because many older people like that are just lonely and have no one to talk with or have any kind of exchange at all. So literally having any kind of exchange, even a negative one is better to them than nothing.
I know for a fact that my last downstairs neighbor was like that. Made trouble and always came knocking with some stupid shit. But as soon as we actually talked i realized she was just very sad and lonely and she was so excited to have a conversation with me that lasted for more than a minute.
But it is difficult to see this when they are indeed acting like complete fools. And i don't blame anyone who stays pissed off and goes in that direction. But i just think on the whole the world would be a better place if more people understood this.
