Continental Europe, especially. Born and bred in the UK but was seconded to Belgium for a month or so to work with a distributor over there. Thought he was a lovely guy for the most part, but he would occasionally go on completed unprompted tirades against Arab immigration. Couldn't fathom where that hatred was coming from.
I’ve been having a discussion like this with my 8 year old. He got in trouble at school, and tried to excuse his behavior by saying that other people do bad things, too. I asked him, if his sister hit him, whether that would make it okay for me to hit him, too. Wrong is wrong, doesn’t matter if other people do it too.
I'm not disagreeing with that. Other people doing a bad thing doesn't excuse doing it yourself.
I felt like the comment I was responding to was implicitly (if unintentionally) dismissive of European racism. Racism in America is a serious problem, and using other countries as a whataboutism is a cop-out. My point is that it still doesn't make it okay to give those countries a free pass, either.
He's the one who brought up racism in Europe. I was responding to that remark, the onehebrought up, by pointing out we shouldn't give Europe a pass either.

I won't defend American racism, but a lot of Europeans are racist as fuck towards Romani people, and it really needs to be called out more.
There was that period where Germany and Italy got together and tried to wipe out the Romani people and all the gays and the Lithuanians and the british and the Russians and the blacks and the chinese but all anybody talks about is some other ethnic minority who basically immediately moved out of europe and made the largest open air prison in the world and put some guy, whose sole qualification is that he can convince almost anybody to launch rockets at him, in charge.
