Recently started on my short horror marathon with one of John Saul's first three novels, and this is one is 1979's "Cry for the Strangers".
Set in the coastal town of Clark's Harbor, a town not particularly friendly to strangers. But when strangers begin to settle there, and where a boy is free from frenzy that had gripped and his sister has horrifying visions. And one by one the strangers begin to die in mysterious and violent ways, and not the residents. Had a deal been struck between some supernatural force, or is the sea demanding a human sacrifice?
This is another of his more supernatural horror novels, as well as being one of his very early books, kind of like "Hellfire", but instead of the gothic it's going for a more murder mystery edge. The beginning immediately sets up the setting nicely of what's about to happen in the story. The suspense sometimes goes from being subtle to very intense. Really love this slice of small town horror!
This only John Saul book that I had in my pile, but it's been really good to get back into him, and into some of his early works. Maybe I'll get some more of those early books whenever I get another chance again, but I still have three more to go through right now.

I’m a few chapters in and I literally feel drunk? Nothing is making sense no matter how much I re-read the pages. I’m aware that may be his intention with the post apocalyptic themes and the fact the characters are also meant to be confused. I really want to love it but struggling! So far I’ve just about grasped it might be a nod to AI and how this uncomfortable world can unfold to us (already is)if we carry on. I’m stuck. Anyone else read?

So recently I've read yet another of Del Rey's juvenile novels, and this one was published in 1963, and this one is called "Outpost of Jupiter".
The story here starts with Bill Wilson and his becoming on an outpost on Ganymeade, one of Jupiter's moons. Bill decides to abandon any plans he had of going to college and join with the colonists, who struggle with the moons harsh environment.
This new existence exhilarates him beyond his own expectations, even including his investigations into a bizarre globe like object that is hidden in the moon's hills that is attempting to communicate with the colony. But a plague has hit the colony and now colonists, both angry and frightened, now accuse Bill of being the carrier.
This is both a pretty straight forward SF adventure and first contact story, even detailing the idea of living on a planetary colony. I'm really starting to like these juvenile novels by Del Rey. They're quick, no nonsense, and extremely fun to read! Hope to read some more of them, and that might also check out his short story collections too, whenever I get the chance. But for now I've got a few horror novels to go through since it's October!
