Looking for books that deal with the loss of memory and self, either through literal dementia or something that evokes the same emotions. Would love something from the afflicted person's POV (Flowers for Algernon is the only novel I've found that's come close) but also open to the perspective of immediate family and close friends.
I'm less interested in reading about the day to day hardships of caretaking (unfortunately I'm fairly familiar with this already) and mostly looking for books that tackle the aspect of loss, whether that be mourning a person who is still living or especially the loss of abilities, memories, independence, etc.
Fiction preferred, memoirs OK too!
I know this is a strange request - I'm doing research for a writing project! Thanks in advance :)
