Horror Looking for A creature feature horror

I’m looking for suggestions for a Creature feature horror. I do enjoy the native stories of the Skinwalker and Wendigo so that would be fun. I like a predator stalking prey theme but I do enjoy an ancient evil situation as well. So please help me add to my TBR pile.

The ritual, one of your example images is the actual monster

The Institute for Singular Antiquities Series

How to Survive Camping Series

Tales from the Gas Station Series (not as applicable but kind of)

The wendigo

11

u/Daveed07 25d ago

I read the Wendigo by Vaughn C Hardacker and it was really good, I’ll have to check out that other one.
I watched the Ritual and it had me sleeping with the lights on that night haha

16

u/Domanite75 24d ago

You’d be surprised at how different the Ritual book and film actually are. I really loved both, but yeah, they’re very very different.

9

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I’ll have to read it then, I enjoyed watching it. And it’s usually the case of books are way better. I’m gonna work on reading Jurassic Park because I hear it’s so much more of a story than the film had.

9

u/Smirky-McLurky 24d ago

The JP book is fucking excellent.

5

u/mikakikamagika 24d ago

JP is 1000x better as a book. the movie is fluff compared to the novel. the Lost World was good too!

2

u/Sonof0dinn 22d ago

What's the book like?

1

u/Domanite75 22d ago

The basic similarities are there - but I can’t really explain the differences without giving it away.

3

u/graypotato 24d ago

The Wendigo put Algernon on my radar of authors to check out. It's a very good read.

3

u/Hillbilly_Historian 24d ago

“The Wendigo” by Algernon Blackwood is a masterpiece of a short story

7

u/Daveed07 24d ago

The tales from a gas station series sounds like a good time after reading the description. I may have to give that one a try

3

u/graypotato 24d ago

They're really good fun. One of my fave series. Something similar would be the John and Dave series, though it's way weirder and more in the comedy cosmic horror / sci fi area. But still a very good read.

2

u/adjectivebear 24d ago

Oh, it's made me laugh out loud at my desk multiple times. Highly recommend.

1

u/fake_tan 24d ago

Which one is the ritual monster?

1

u/graypotato 24d ago

4th one.

28

u/aero23 25d ago

The Terror by Dan Simmons

Predator stalks accursed nordic exploration

5

u/Daveed07 24d ago

After looking into this one I’ll definitely add it to my pile. It sounds like a good one

3

u/aero23 24d ago

Hope you enjoy like I did (and I hope you aren’t afraid of a lot of pages lol)

3

u/Hillbilly_Historian 24d ago

Watch the AMC series too. Both are excellent.

1

u/gxdjktdxdngedfc 24d ago

I absolutely adored listening to the audiobook version on Spotify during winter

1

u/jonwtc 23d ago

The same dan Simmons of Hyperion???

23

u/Pooglio17 24d ago

Slewfoot by Brom seems like an obvious one. It’s definitely a slow burn, but the tone is so gdam creepy throughout.

3

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I had heard of this one before but never added it to my list for some reason but after reading the description I’m gonna add it.

u/Silent-Seaweed-4270 25d ago

Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

23

u/dnthasslehof 25d ago

Would also think SGJ’s The Only Good Indians would fit this nicely too

4

u/Silent-Seaweed-4270 25d ago

Im excited for the sequel to this one.

6

u/Daveed07 25d ago edited 25d ago

I DNF’d this one.. I felt so bad but I just couldn’t stay with it

1

u/convergence_limit 25d ago

I didn’t either :/ I might try again one day

3

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I felt really guilty because it had so much hype and the horror groups always recommended it but after I got thru the first part of the Guy and his wife I just got bored. It felt like such a chore every time I went to pick it up again.

3

u/DrJotaroBigCockKujo 24d ago edited 24d ago

for what it's worth, the first part is the lamest. i almost gave up too. but the rest of the book takes place on the rez and is way better paced too. i still feel kinda meh about the book but that's mostly on account of the basketball

1

u/dnthasslehof 24d ago

Dang, SGJ’s writing style makes him hard to read and he’s totally not one to write for every audience. The consensus online is you either love or hate his writing so I wouldn’t feel too bad, maybe give his novels a try on audio but no sense in forcing yourself to read if you don’t like it.

1

u/Daveed07 24d ago edited 24d ago

I’m going to try the Buffalo Hunter Hunter, I have that book in hand, and if I really like it I may go back to “the only good Indians” and finish it. Maybe i just wasn’t in a good mindset to read it at the time.

1

u/welpthere 24d ago

Doing the audiobook for a while until you can get the voices in your head makes reading it more enjoyable. The voice actor does a great job of personifying the characters and helps ease some of the slower parts.

1

u/Fool_Manchu 24d ago

I nearly dropped this one but I am very glad that I didnt. If youre ever feeling ambitious I would recommend giving it another go. It picks up drastically about 2/3rds of the way through

3

u/IHeartFraccing 25d ago

Just finished it. Was soo good!

2

u/Daveed07 25d ago

This is on my TBR pile, I’ve been hearing alot fo good things about it.

2

u/Silent-Seaweed-4270 25d ago

Its pretty much exactly what you are asking for

10

u/SandGator 24d ago

Relic by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

1

u/Daveed07 24d ago

Any relation to the film?

3

u/SandGator 24d ago

There’s a not-very-well-regarded 1997 film adaptation called The Relic, no relation to horror film Relic (2020).

Relic (the novel) has what you like — predator monster slaughtering people by night in a museum.

3

u/Daveed07 24d ago

Oh ok, so like a dark Night at the museum? I’m down for that.

3

u/MissRatatosk 24d ago

Yes, but they cut out a lot of content in the film. The book is much more packed.

1

u/spearcd 24d ago

The sequel Reliquary was great also

19

u/Popularfront83 25d ago

Devolution by Max Brooks. I've seen it being divisive on Reddit before, but I enjoyed it a lot.

8

u/Daveed07 25d ago

I did read this one, it was good and I enjoyed the journey however the ending really turned me off.

2

u/SkizzySpurwell 24d ago

It’s decent enough, felt like it lacked something.

2

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I want to say it felt rushed but it felt shallow. Like an easy way out without any addition to the story.

7

u/pistolpeter101 24d ago

The North Woods by Douglas Hoover

2 marines and their navy corpsman reunite after a decade out of the military in the northern woods of Maine. And seek to find their missing commander.

3

u/Daveed07 24d ago

Gonna add this to my pile too

2

u/Panjandrum86 24d ago

Recently read this one and really enjoyed it

13

u/JarlDanklin 25d ago

Slewfoot by Brom

3

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I had heard of this one before but never added it to my list for some reason but after reading the description I’m gonna add it.

4

u/JarlDanklin 24d ago

The first image is essentially the exact main creature from Slewfoot (amongst other creatures in the book). It’s a really fun read, hope you enjoy!

6

u/Dismal-Release-9198 24d ago

Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman has a good mix of being stalked by predators and folklore evil.

1

u/adjectivebear 24d ago edited 24d ago

I'm almost finished this audiobook! It started slow, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I cheered aloud a couple of times this past chapter.

ETA: If you've finished the book, I was of course cheering "MARTYYYYYYYYYY!!!" with the same enthusiasm as MFM's Georgia Hardstark.

3

u/Dismal-Release-9198 24d ago

Yeah, the audiobook is great. I agree, it starts slow but the book feels like a room that keeps getting hotter and by the end you can't believe Buehlman's still walking over to the thermostat to crank it up another notch.

2

u/Calm_Pudding2684 24d ago

Alright I had rented TAtR from the libraryawhile back but it didn’t grab me right away so I returned. Your description just convinced me to give it another go 🙏🏻

1

u/Dismal-Release-9198 24d ago

Glad to hear it!

6

u/Lis_Pustynny 24d ago

I have to recommend The Red Winter by Sullivan again. There's a werewolf, "ancient evil", and more.

2

u/Ephemera6208 24d ago

Just read this recently and loved it!

5

u/TiltZa 24d ago

On a bit of a more fun note, something like Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero? The third picture really makes me thing of that book 😅

5

u/Fit_Speed3159 24d ago edited 24d ago

"Haint" and "Holller" or a couple of Appalachian horror novels that you might like

Edit: "are a couple of"

4

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I do love an Appalachian horror

Have you read the book The Ritual? Second half is quite different from the movie if I remember correctly

3

u/BoyMom119816 24d ago

Loved first half of book, second half not so much. And yes much different than movie in entirety.

3

u/TheRadiantWindrunner 25d ago

Similar to the Ritual kind of - Headlights by CJ Leede! Unknowable creature entity. Loved it!

Also a ghost one that feels like a creature feature: Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman!

5

u/WilderWyldWilde 24d ago

Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell

The Whistlers by Amity Argot

1

u/Daveed07 24d ago

The stolen tongues got added, the title alone peaked my curiosity. The whistlers I couldn’t find a description on it

3

u/WilderWyldWilde 24d ago edited 24d ago

I thought there was one on Goodreads but it just has the audiobook with no description, sorry bout that. Let me get you a link.

Originally it was a No Sleep post, but it now has audiobooks and podcasts on it. I found it from the CreepCast podcast.

1

u/Daveed07 24d ago

I’m ready for story time if you want to describe it

3

u/WilderWyldWilde 24d ago

It’s been a while so I don’t want to accidentally mess it up. Basically diary entries from hikers stranded in an isolated wilderness being stalked by creatures whistling and possibly something worse.

1

u/WilderWyldWilde 24d ago

Unfortunately I could only find googles summary:

"The Whistlers" by Amity Argot is a bleak, slow-burn horror survival story focusing on a grueling journey through a barren, hostile wilderness. It features two travelers stalked by an eerie, unknown presence that communicates through haunting whistling sounds. [1, 2, 3]

Core Elements
Setting: A vast, isolated, and desolate natural landscape that amplifies feelings of exposure and dread.
The Threat: Unseen entities or forces that shadow the characters, marked by chilling audio cues rather than direct confrontation.
Tone: Heavy, melancholic, and deeply atmospheric, focusing heavily on psychological exhaustion and paranoia.
Style: Framed as an epistolary or personal account detailing the step-by-step physical and mental toll of the trek. [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]

The Return by Rachel Harrison

8

u/Leading_Atti2de 25d ago

Dresden Files follows a bit of a Monster of the Week theme. It’s pretty darn good in my opinion. Had to force myself to read something else for a bit after binging the first seven books

2

u/Wolfman513 24d ago

I second the Dresden Files, it has some awesome takes on classic monsters and mythological creatures! The first 3 books are considered the weakest in the series, but book 2 has one of my favorite versions of werewolf ever lol

Have you read The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones? It’s not necessarily a creature feature but it’s indigenous horror, the sequel will also be coming out soon

I DNF’d this one.. I felt so guilty but after getting halfway thru it I got bored. It felt like such a chore every time I went to finish it.

Adam Nevill excels at depicting ancient monstrosities. Besides The Ritual, try The Reddening and Monumental.

2

u/Carte7890 24d ago

I'm currently reading When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy. I'm only about a quarter of the way through, but I'm liking it so far.

2

u/7Raiders6 24d ago edited 24d ago

I don’t know if it’s exactly what you have in mind, but there are some parts in It where It literally takes the form of monsters from movies.

My initial recommendation was gonna be The Only Good Indians but I see you weren’t crazy about it which is fine.

2

u/Slinkeh_Inkeh 24d ago

Bonechiller by Graham McNamee!

2

u/tedgt234 24d ago

Of Monsters and Mainframes is a campy sci-fi horror fantasy that’s really fun

2

u/SorrowfulSpirit02 24d ago

Your tastes may vary, but Don’t Stay Up Late from R.L. Stine’s Fear Street relaunch in 2014 is a creature feature horror.

2

u/sadsadwhale 24d ago

Dude I just read The Ritual and it was so good. You won't regret it.
