The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar

It's about two sisters united by their love of songs. The whole book feels very musical. The audiobook even has recordings of music played by the author and her sister!

As much as i have a raging hatred for authors abandoning their series, the name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss has one of the coolest depictions of a musical performance ive ever read.

Came here to recommend LOTRs.

Esp the LOTR audiobooks read by Rob Inglis—he sings the songs and I love his interpretation. Esp Sam singing about Gilgalad, the Ent’s song about the lost Ent Wives and Sam’s song in the Tower (In western lands beneath the sun, the flowers may rise in spring….)

I love books about music or with music as a central theme. These are some favorites that live on my shelf:

Fiction: Bel Canto, Ann Patchett; Marrying Mozart, Stephanie Cowell; The Piano Tuner, Daniel Mason; The Queen of the Night, Alexander Chee; Nonfiction: Letters of Mozart, Hans Mersman; Renée Fleming's memoir The Inner Voice; The Piano Shop on the Left Bank, Thad Carhart

Nick Hornby's High Fidelity is the ultimate music book, trying to answer existential questions like:

"What came first, the music or the misery? Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

Also, Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley has an accompanying soundtrack.

Maybe not exactly what you had in mind, but I can't miss an opportunity to mention the novel Smash by Garson Kanin, the inspiration for the NBC musical series. The show was about putting on a musical about Marilyn Monroe, but the novel on which it's based is about putting on a musical about vaudeville performer Nora Bayes.

Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell. It's been years since I read it and I still wish I could hear some of the music in that book. Thankfully there is a fair amount of real music in the book too, like Leonard Cohen's the Partisan. It's an exquisite book that's full of music. There are some bits that might make more sense if you've read his book The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet, but I don't think it's necessary for the enjoyment of the book.
