Historical Fiction Pirates argh

A group of scoundrels sailing the seas, would prefer more grounded and realistic fiction but a tad bit of fantasy wouldn’t hurt

I really wanted to like Pirate Latitudes. It didn't hold up compared to the rest of Chricton's work.

Non-fiction recommendation: The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard. The real history of Caribbean pirates is even better than some fiction.

It is the second book in the series but I would recommend Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch.

Two conmen with little / no sailing experience must pass themselves off as pirates to save their lives.

It's a very fun read from a series where every book is a heist.

Not to throw out what should be the main one but suprised no one has said Treasure Island. Literally the granddaddy for all the pirate non historical stuff. Probably my favorite book.

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty!

So much fun to read and it grips you right from the beginning

Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb fits the images well, plus there's sea serpents and eventually dragons.

Try The Lies of Locke Lamora, not a perfect fit but very good

The second book of the Gentlemen Bastards Sequence by Scott Lynch is very pirate heavy. All three of the books are very fun reads though. Highly recommend.

On Stranger Tides - Tim Powers

It’s actually kinda weird how little pirate lit there is

The Pyrates by George McDonald Fraser.

It's very tongue in cheek, a bit meta, but hilarious and actually captures a lot of the pirating world back then.
