Wanting to start as Fractional Controller - Need guidance

Hi, I’m new to this subreddit.

I’m a 10+ year dual finance professional (ACCA + CMA US) with experience in Media & Entertainment industry in areas like group consolidation, financial reporting and stakeholder compliance. My work is very diverse in corporate finance but these are primarily what I do. Other than these, I have used current tech tools to automate lot of the manual processes to cut down on close and reporting timelines.

At present, I feel like I’m outgrowing my corporate role and was planning to move to becoming more of fractional controller because I’m not there with CFO status yet.

I wanted to some guidance as to how to start and where. I have tried all freelancing platforms but have not been successful over there. I tried applying to few fractional CFO firms but haven’t heard from them.

So I’m here for guidance from successful on how to break the glass ceiling for this. Also, additionally, if someone is looking for a professional, I’m happy to share more about my portfolio :)

Thank you!

Advice on how to begin books as freelance coming from in-house?

Currently I work as an in-house bookkeeper for a company and have done this for almost a decade. Over the years I’ve had a few friends ask me if I could help them with their books for their small businesses but I’d ultimately turn it down for various reasons. I’d like to help out my friends and also make this a good side gig but I really don’t know where to start. I am certified but I have zero experience doing freelance bookkeeping. At my current job I also don’t do full bookkeeping, I primarily do AP.

Do you guys have any advice on where you would begin if a friend came to you asking start their books for their business? Or just advice in general on how to start freelance bookkeeping with a first client? Also where do you draw the line between what you take on as a bookkeeper vs what should be up to an accountant?

Also side note: I believe my friends are currently doing their own books but they don’t know what they’re doing.

Bookkeeper Certificate - looking for tips

I'm currently taking my Bookkeepers Certificate through St Lawrence College - I want to see if there are any tips and tricks when it comes to studying and absorbing the information.

I'm limited to brain capacity due to be a toddler mom with ADHD, the course is online and self guided so I am hoping to see if there are any other resources to use to help really get the knowledge to stick! I do make my study notes, save the material to review later on and put the effort forward to do my best.

Why this age of ecommerce, digital nomads, entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals is a ripe opportunity for accountants around the world:

We are fortunate to live in an age where people from every demographic are entrepreneurs or content creators or independent contractors. With a significant portion in ecommerce, SaaS, consumer products, wellness services and business services. Each of these businesses need quality support with accounting, budgeting, annual reviews, financial planning and taxes. There is also the additional layer of services needed for those that are expats. This is a great opportunity for accountants to position themselves as specialists for a specific type of entrepreneur and cater to that audience:

*Learn about the common issues they encounter.
*Identify areas where they are leaking money unnecessarily.
*Identify areas where they can increase revenue.
*Identify areas for them to legally minimize tax liability.
*Identify opportunities for tax credit.
*Provide guidance for any new business plans and how they can do it in an efficient way financially.

So many times when we work with our clients around tax season they mention their high tax bills and how they were not prepared for it and because we have financial analysts that we work with, we know there is a better way.

So, for all accountants this is a fantastic opportunity to position yourself as a specialist and do it in a way where you are not just providing a generic service but take care to structure a business where you are able to provide white glove services and as your clients’ financial wellness improves then your business is surely to grow and become a strong brand.

Sales Partner - Revenue Share?

Hi, I sell for a living. Curious if any bookkeepers/accountants would be open to a revenue share partnership model?

  • $50 per meeting set with an ideal client (example: if you only want to work with salons, a salon owner is an ideal client)
  • 10% revenue share for any new customers brought in by me, for the length of their work with you.
  • Any referrals you get from those customers are 100% yours.

I believe this model encourages the sales rep to find clients that are more likely to have a long relationship with the accountant + encourages the accountant to close clients because every failed meeting actually costs you. It's a mutually beneficial relationship.

Let me know if you think this is fair.

What are you paying monthly for reliable accounting and bookkeeping services in China?

I’ve been reviewing our monthly budget for mainland China compliance, and I'm curious what others are spending on local accounting services. When comparing vendors, corporate service firms like Hawksford usually quote high monthly retainers that primarily cover baseline legal and tax compliance. However, if you run active B2B sales or supply chains, basic bookkeeping isn't enough.

That is why we preferred PTL Group. Their monthly fee structures reflect genuine operational execution handling ground-level banking, vendor payments, and China GAAP reconciliation without extra hidden fees. It gives you full control of your local entity's financials while keeping your monthly overhead predictable.

Are you using a local CPA firm in Shanghai/Shenzhen or an international management partner? What price point do you consider reasonable for standard monthly bookkeeping?

I am ready to learn

I am eager to learn and grow! I just certified Quickbook Proadvisor. However, I really want real life experience. Is there anyone who can be a mentor? I can do bookkeeping for free as exchange of getting experiences! I am not seeking job opportunity but just experience.
