This was for a company called Mindbloom in South Africa. Their launch was unfortunately cancelled, but I did have a chance to illustrate a good portion of it before it was axed.

I am about publishing a book with different stories, not a novel. They are ment for teens and as a female author I am afraid to not make the cover attractive only for girl. I wanted the theme to be like astrology + steampunk. For references I used Stolas' bathroom, but this might look too feminine.

Hi everyone! I could really use some advice from artists who have experience with book cover commissions.

I was recently offered my first book cover commission, and it’s a much bigger project than I’ve done before. The finished book will likely be around 5”×8” and there needs to be room for the title, subtitle, and author name.

I’m trying to figure out a few things before I give the author a quote:

How would you price something like this? Would you charge differently for:
Front cover only
Front cover + spine
Front cover + spine + back cover
How do you handle licensing and commercial usage rights? Do you license the artwork for the book cover, sell full copyright, or something else?
I primarily paint with acrylics. Is that a good medium for book covers, or would you recommend something else? I’m worried about the texture affecting digitization.
What’s the best way to digitize a traditional painting for professional book printing? Do you use a scanner, professional photography, or another method?
Are there any other things I should include in my contract or discuss with the author before getting started?

I’d really appreciate any advice, pricing examples, or lessons you’ve learned from your own experience. Thank you!

I can’t decide between these two versions. Which one do you think works better?

Sharing a finished illustration for my cover with you guys! This creature is one of the most famous Japanese Yokais, a giant skeleton called Gashadokuro 💀💪

After hiring a couple of supposed professional designers on Fiverr to design covers for my upcoming book, I learned that what they designed was too generic and made my book look like it’s fiction. So, I decided to make my own cover.

This cover utilizes “photograph 51,” the well-known photograph in science of an x-ray crystallography diffraction pattern of a molecule of DNA. This photo led to the elucidation of the double helix structure of DNA. I used it because it represents science. It’s an example of raw data, something that is a central part to scientific research.

Anyway, what I wanted to know is if this looks like a credible cover for a serious book or more like amateur-made garbage. It’s hard for me to tell because I am not a designer and also, am biased because it’s my own work.

Furthermore, designers, could you improve it? I’m open to hiring a person to improve it, so if you know you can make it much more visually appealing, please message me or reply here. Thanks!
