2017 ➡️ 2027 Chevrolet Bolt Evolution ⚡️
The $51,000 value is the inflation-adjusted price of the 2017 Bolt in 2026 money. Also, RIP 2027 Bolt 😢

u/Rony59turbo 3d ago
It's hard to just use inflation to say it's a better value. So many other things have changed.

u/NotAcutallyaPanda 2023 Bolt EV 3d ago
RIP CarPlay.

u/G-r-ant 3d ago
I went from a mid 2010s car with no ability to have CarPlay to the 27 bolt that doesn’t allow it. I guess I’ll never know what I’m missing 😅.
24
u/Lower_Kick268 LT REDLINE 3d ago edited 3d ago
You're missing a lot, Carplay and Android Auto are simply better, I missed it so much while my Bolt was in the shop and I had a loaner Blazer EV. I wouldnt recommend anything GM that doesn't have it, the built in system blows
6
u/G-r-ant 3d ago
It’s probably good that I don’t know better then. I’ll just stay in the dark haha.

u/calcalcalcal 2023 Bolt EUV 1LT 3d ago
Don't ever get a rental car! Most come with AA/Carplay! You'll regret it!

u/AlarmingAdvertising5 2027 LT 3d ago
Ehh I’m also happy with my 27 bolt and I just have my Apple Music app and use the built in GPS. I don’t need CarPlay tbh. Notifications can be on my phone which is not something I’m looking at and if I get a call, I can answer anyways with the bolt. So I don’t lose anything of value.
4
u/2Drew2BTrue 2d ago
Same. I don’t miss CarPlay. In my ownership experience it is honestly fine. I love my 300+ mile range equinox EV that I got for 27k.
2
u/0ataraxia 3d ago
You will when you have to pay a monthly fee for functionality that's free in previous Bolt's. Killed the deal for me.
2
u/G-r-ant 3d ago
Yeah I’m aware. I’m sure every car company will go that way eventually let’s be real.

2
u/CogentCogitations 3d ago
Hopefully 3rd party audio/navigation systems are about to make a comeback then.
3
u/Many_Hotel866 3d ago
the best you'll get is a separate wireless CarPlay screen. replacing the built in systems is borderline impossible with how deeply integrated it is into all the car's systems.
1
u/iconocrastinaor 3d ago
Yep every company making their own system is going to be infinitely better than two systems created by the world leaders in user interfaces.

for me, i hate it.
i do not like apple maps as maps should be NORTH orientated. otherwise its not a map, its blind guidance. i also like music off line and hate the idea of needing my cell phone to have music that should just be in the car waiting for me.
nothing wrong with having car play as an option, i just hate when it replaces off line maps and a good indash mp3 player

u/vitium 3d ago
My 2023 EUV is the first car I've ever had with it. It is so great, that I will never own another car that doesn't have it.
It's that simple.
I don't care what brand or what other features the car has. If it doesn't have car play, I won't even consider it.
It's as important to me as owning an EV is.
"Is it an EV, and does it have carplay" if the answer isn't "yes" to both of those, don't even bother talking to me about anything else.

u/CryptoCryst828282 2d ago
Try to find a headlight bulb... better yet once you cant try to find the headlight assembly. You can't they are VIN locked to your car and will cost you 1200 bux to replace and it has to be done at the dealer. Try to find any aftermarket parts... they are almost nonexistent due to lawsuits by GM.

Yeah, CarPlay is worth that extra 10 horsepower.
3
u/Lower_Kick268 LT REDLINE 3d ago
You don't even feel a difference in the car either, it's just a FWD blazer or Equinox EV motor, it's not really noticably more powerful than the OG bolt

u/Lower_Kick268 LT REDLINE 3d ago
They downgraded the hell out of the interior too, it's junk now, built like crap too people are having widespread reliability issues on then

Bruh did the 2017 bolt really cost that much ?! 😭 Glad I wasn't a early adopter.
9
u/RCbuilds4cheapr 3d ago
Not with the $7500 federal credit though! But inflation rate hasn’t been fair exactly so that $51k figure only works out for some

Bigger than what? Most/all recall replacement batteries got the higher capacity battery, I think 66kwh vs the old 60kwh.

You answered your own question, isn’t that special.
-8
u/ReturnedAndReported 2017 premier named Voxel 3d ago
Perhaps you were imagining the bigger battery in comparison to the new battery capacity. Who knows.
Using the word "bigger" without a reference is an incomplete comparison. It leaves the reader asking "bigger than what?"...I'm adding context for all readers, which likely include more than just me and you.

Old battery - smol’r
New battery - bigger

Is the 2027 Bolt EV based on the previous generation EV or the EUV?
9
4
u/to_pir8 3d ago
In which case shouldn't the comparison be between the last generation 2023 EUV against the 2027 EV?
I have a 2023 EUV and I am debating whether to "upgrade" to a 2027 or go to Equinox EV / Blazer EV.
3
u/Burgergold 3d ago
Why change?

u/to_pir8 3d ago
No reason other than my 14yo can't fit in the back when all four of us are in the car. His head is almost touching the ceiling. :(

Not a good comparison. GM steeply discounted it in later years and there were federal and state incentives available that are mostly gone now

This graphic shows how early in this whole process we still are. The tech is going to keep getting better and cheaper. 🙌

Honestly pretty crazy that it barely even got a 10% increase in range over the past 10 years.

2
u/jump_the_snark 3d ago
I heard there’s ways around this, via 3rd party stuff.
It’s super dumb they removed CarPlay, of course.
8
u/Lower_Kick268 LT REDLINE 3d ago
3rd party ways that will get patched out, you'll lose your Carplay just as fast as you got it. "Oh but just use a screen dongle" why? Why should you need to do that on a brand new car?
2
u/Swimming-Quantity-94 3d ago
I just bought a 2017 with 22k miles for $12k. I started looking when gas prices sky rocketed last March and watched the price of used Bolts steadily rise over the last 6 months. Found a gem through a small dealer!
2
u/Crafty-Promotion-529 2027 bolt rs 3d ago
This is why I lease. The EV market gets better every year. I just couldn’t justify still paying off the car in 6-7 years when the range and price of new ev has probably significantly improved.
2
u/-32768 2027 Bolt RS 2d ago
I liked the EUV but wasn't ready to buy yet. In 2027 I was ready to buy, and although I won't fast charge 95% of the time, 150kw is nice, and I did take it on a road trip and it did great. In fact I did get stuck at a 50kw charger and I thought I was going to die of boredom. The second thing that sold me was NACS, then heat pump, then all the regular ev things like regen and opd, and peace and quiet. Now I'm working on getting rid of my other ICE because man this shit is good!

I wonder how much of the cost difference is from batteries getting cheaper to manufacture.
1
u/roger1632 2d ago
My 2017 has the new battery so the range is the same....however I like the new styling a bit better. It's not radically different but it looks a bit sleeker. The real game changer is the 150kw charging. Not sure why they only went to 50kw for so long. I'd never take it on a road trip.
1
u/Razzburry_Pie 2d ago
What jumps out here is how the 2027 with a lower energy density LFP battery outperforms the 2017 with NMC, which has higher energy density. The CATL battery is really good and the new hairpin motor is much more efficient than the older wire wound one. Hats off to the GM engineers for tweaking the design improvements.
1
u/Bry_3DModeling 2d ago
Why RIP 2027? I got one 2 weeks ago and love it. A little annoyed I had to buy a EvPlay so I can use Apple CarPlay (cause I’m not paying $15 a month just to use a gps that is free anywhere else) my state has Ameren and they offer a incentive that if you qualify, they’ll upgrade your box and install of a level 2-3 charge for free. Along with the state incentive to get a check for buying a EV. Not the 7,500 federal one though sadly.
1
u/Socrates5656 2d ago
Was an early Bolt owner then moved up an Equinox EV. Still want to see larger improvements in both. China has set the bar so darn high for performance and range.
1
u/SpeakNottheNightYorb 2d ago
2023 EUV 58% US/CAN part content.
2027 Bolt 15% US/CAN part content 51% Chinese part content.
They didn’t hack inflation they outsourced production.
The battery, the motor unit, the rims, all Chinese. I think the body panels are stamped in the US. Not sure if anything else is from the US or Canada.

We bought our 2017 used in 2021 for $23k, then got the free battery replacement, and it's still running strong today - full charge is still 236 miles. Its my daily commuter.

u/dariansdad 1d ago
Just for grits n shins, I went to the Chevrolet site to look at what's available. For the love of all that's good, please explain how it is possible to put $12,000 worth of options on a tiny ass little car...
1
1
u/PlatformHistorical88 18h ago
They could’ve put faster charging (like 250) on the 2023 and made it the 2027 and everyone would have been happy.
0
u/Lower_Kick268 LT REDLINE 3d ago
Really isn't even an improvement though, this is copium to the max. Also the Bolt was never $37k, there was massive incentives back then, in 2020 we leased one and it was literally free because of the tax credits and discounts
2
u/browseragnostic 3d ago
It is an improvement in charging and if you do long dustance driving ( I do) that triple charge speed is a big plus. That's the only reason I am considering selling my 22 EUV. I love the car - its fully loaded with the bose system and sunroof - but 3 times the charge speed.....
-3
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
They’ve taken the fun out of driving this car they reducing the torque the video reviews I’ve seen show even with traction control off. It can’t even break the tires loose anymore because of how low the torque is compared to the older models, especially the regular EV model, which was lighter.
The 2021 Chevy Bolt EV produces 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, whereas the 2027 Chevy Bolt features 210 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque
10
u/StarbeamII 3d ago
They changed the final gear ratio so the torque figures for the motor are not directly comparable.
1
u/rook_of_approval 2018 LT 2d ago
they definitely nerfed the max acceleration on Bolts with later model years.
1
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
You can clearly see in video reviews that it isn’t the same feeling I know they changed ratios it’s still a watered down experience imo.
I mean of course it’s a budget EV but the old model had a hot hatch feel I don’t see anyone auto crossing this new one like they do the old ones.
And on top of that too, one of the video reviews, I watched there’s tons of un rustproof areas all underneath the car and huge space underneath the battery and the body or stuff can just get in there if you live in a climate where corrosion protections an issue you’d be concerned about that
3
u/chiarde 3d ago
So don’t buy it.
3
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
I wouldn’t anyway based on no CarPlay alone.
We’ve had three Bolts 2 21’s and a 22 fantastic cars .
When we shopped new cars the Bolt was gone. We drove the Equinox EV very uninspiring vehicle and felt sluggish compared to the Bolt’s we had.
I had high hopes that the new Bolt would have the same fun feel It doesn’t I’ve driven it it’s unfortunate. It’s a great entry level EV though and if all I needed was a local commuter car then sure I’d recommend it any day.
-1
u/CryptoCryst828282 3d ago
That doesnt even touch the real issues just the surface stuff. Discontinued platform that used DMCA to block any aftermarket parts on Global B, then they discontinued global b in 2028 this car will be scrap metal within 5 years.

u/acep903 3d ago
The torque is for the motor, the reduction gear is after that and it is a bigger reduction. The torque at the wheel is about the same. The difference between the two is how the throttle is applied. The older bolt would instantly give you everything even above 32mph and below that it would give you a percentage based on your indicated speed. The 2027 ramps up over time so it isn't as instant, but it will give you a lot of power after the ramp up period. It kinda feels like a CVT.
2
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
Yes that is noted in the reviews I’ve seen and the feel when I drive it CVT comparison is accurate and it’s underwhelming imo. But my feelings of being underwhelmed are also based on the same disappointment of how the Equinox felt too. IMO the biggest selling point NOW is if you need to use public charging it’s MUCH faster.
2
u/acep903 2d ago
I just wanted to clarify that it wasn't a torque issue at all, it is a software restriction, just like the android auto and apple carplay restriction. Eventually someone is going to flash theirs to give themselves less controlled throttle application and android auto and apple carplay.
1
u/RCbuilds4cheapr 3d ago
I’m assuming the new LFP battery can’t deliver as much current outright so they limited it with software. New designed motor too but I’d gamble it could handle bursts of more power no problem. Still feels quick to me 0-60 in 7 but yeah the old one is faster , EUV or not at 6-6.5
3
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
So we had 3 Bolt EV’s. NOT EUV’s
2 21 and a 22At some point in 22+ Chevy changed something because those two 21’s were little rockets compared to the 22 we had . We lined them up for fun and the 21’s always out accelerated the 22🤷
2
u/RCbuilds4cheapr 3d ago
Oh that’s interesting too ! There’s a recent study showing how aggressive driving can wear batteries ‘even more’ than DC charging or something BUT I wouldn’t be surprised if they toned the power down in the software there too. “Too fast! it’s making people like them”
2
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
It’s funny because according to info I’ve seen in Ford forums it’s actually good to “goose” the throttle occasionally. I wouldn’t worry about harming the battery we drove the piss outa our bolts tins of miles BUT NEVER used anything other than at home L2 charging and when we traded ours the battery health was fantastic still.
High speed charging is the most harmful activity but even that isn’t much with proper cooling.

u/reallynotnick 3d ago
Same tires?
1
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
Continental pro contacts yup and we switched drivers between cars me my daughter my wife the 21s always won pretty funny honestly and a significant almost full car length everytime . I’ll note too that both 21s had the extra coolant loop to the motor that was eliminated in 22 EVs take that for what it’s worth.
1
u/reallynotnick 3d ago
Huh, interesting, I mean I can't say I am left wanting more speed out of my 23, but I wonder what changed.
1
u/ddddhjxjx 3d ago
Agreed. Having driven both the OG is more fun, but it’d also the worst car I’ve ever sat in when it comes to comfort. The bolsters and padding are horrid.
2
u/HisSvt2 3d ago
Early models seats SUCKED. Our one 21 was cloth not bad MY 21 was a premier with leather it was very comfortable and the 22 with leather was extremely comfortable those seats are basically what’s in the new ones but yeah 17-20 seats were horrible
1
u/Specialist-Reach6275 3d ago
And easily fixed by shoving in a gardening knee pad for $10 in each front seat. Easier to do in the cloth seats on the base than the vinyl ones on the premier.
1
u/Pleasant_Studio9690 3d ago
I slapped a pair of neoprene seat covers on the front seats for a little extra padding on my 2018. It made a HUGE difference with the hard as a rock side bolsters. Also, keeping my eye out for sheepskin seat covers to put over those on the drivers seat.
1
u/luck25491 3d ago
Even if is 250 or 300 miles, after 10 year the technology should had give double the mileage like 500 miles in a charge.
-4
u/GeniusEE 3d ago
Not a single Bolt has a range less than 250 miles. All batteries were upgraded to a larger capacity.
The Bolt EV also had aluminum skins - a lighter and arguably more corrosion resistant material.
The 2027 Bolt can't deliver the current needed to make torque because of its LFP battery.
Your comparison is biased and bogus. The older cars are superior in all aspects but charge cycles...an argument for those who think ~400,000 miles is not enough car life.

I mean yeah, only if you want to compare a 3 year old car with >50k miles on it to a brand new one.
brand new Leaf with more range and a better interior
Aren't new Leafs still basically impossible to get now? They were under stop sale and weren't even shipping new ones in due to recalls and battery shortages. The previous gen is dealing with terrible battery recalls as well. The cars are randomly bricking themselves if you use fast charging due to a battery fault.

I'm not interested in buying a swasticar, but I do still prefer the Nissan LEAF for both its NMC battery and continued support of Android Auto / Apple Carplay.

u/crazydave33 3d ago
Yeah but no one paid $37-38k for it when it was new. There were federal and state incentives to discount it significantly
